Chapter 48: Former Supervisor
Following beside Manager Jia was a woman with heavily curled hair and bright red lipstick—probably his “special friend.”
“Sir, your clothes are all packed. Would you like to pay by card?” the salesgirl asked.
Chu Feng nodded. “Card.”
“Please come this way to pay.”
Chu Feng walked over, glanced at the number on the POS machine, and paused for a moment.
He hadn’t looked at the prices while shopping—only now did he realize how expensive the clothes were. Over 30,000 yuan for three items! Back then, that would’ve been more than half a year’s salary for him.
Still, Chu Feng didn’t think much of it and swiped his card without hesitation.
The shop girl beamed as she continued showering Chu Feng with compliments, which seemed to irritate Jia Nian.
“Chu Feng, did you find a new job? Where are you working now?” Jia Nian asked loudly.
Knowing full well Jia Nian was trying to embarrass him, Chu Feng remained calm. “No, just freelancing.”
Jia Nian lifted his chin smugly. “The company’s had more deliveries lately. If you want to come back, we can make arrangements—but you’d better work hard this time.”
“No thanks. I want to take a break for a while,” Chu Feng replied coolly.
The salesgirl overheard and gave Chu Feng a puzzled look.
“Is everything packed?” Chu Feng asked.
“Yes, sir, everything’s ready. Hope to see you again!” the salesgirl said sweetly.
Jia Nian curiously asked, “What kind of clothes did you buy? You seem to have good taste. Tell me, so I can use it as a reference.”
Chu Feng casually pointed to a nearby clothing rack. “That one, and that one… they all looked good. I tried them on—perfect fit. And there’s a promotion right now—40% off.”
Jia Nian chuckled. “40% off, huh? That’s quite a discount.”
The salesgirl, hearing this, was secretly pleased.
Chu Feng smiled. “Manager Jia, take your time. I have things to do—see you.”
The shop girl quickly added, “Sir, take care. Here’s my card—you can add me on WeChat. I’ll let you know when new arrivals come in.”
“Sure.” Chu Feng had already received over a dozen business cards today. Even if he found them useless, he didn’t want to hurt the shop girls’ feelings, so he stuffed it into one of his bags.
“Sir, would you like the same outfit as that gentleman?” another salesgirl asked Jia Nian. “The total is 32,700 yuan. Will you be paying in cash or by card?”
The girl was fast—once Jia Nian expressed interest, she immediately wrapped it up.
Jia Nian was shocked and furious. “32,700?! Are you trying to rob me?”
The salesgirl frowned. “All our prices are clearly marked. How could that be called robbery?”
“How is it that expensive? Isn’t it supposed to be 40% off?”
“That’s the discounted price—otherwise it would’ve been over 50,000!”
“What kind of clothes are these, to cost so much?”
“These are international designer brands, sir. Nationally standardized prices.”
Jia Nian was both stunned and angry. “That guy just now…”
“He paid with a card,” the salesgirl replied calmly.
“No way he could afford that,” Jia Nian said flatly.
The salesgirl responded with a hint of disdain, “He already bought a whole round of items earlier. Had so many bags he couldn’t carry them all—we even helped him take them down once.”
Chu Feng had bought so much that several staff members from the stores helped him carry things out during his spree.
Jia Nian muttered in disbelief, “Impossible.” He knew Chu Feng’s situation well—he had always been a broke nobody.
Chu Feng had always performed well in his job as a deliveryman. When Jia Nian fired him, it was really just a power move—he assumed Chu Feng would come crawling back and apologize to get the job again. Who knew Chu Feng would disappear entirely, not even answering phone calls.
The female sales assistant shrugged and, judging by Jia Nian’s expression, guessed that the deal probably wasn’t going to go through. Her tone immediately turned cold.
“What’s impossible? Maybe he won the lottery.”
“Impossible,” Jia Nian replied instinctively.
The salesgirl shrugged again and asked coolly, “So, are you still taking these clothes or not?”
Face flushed red, Jia Nian said, “No.”
Although Jia Nian was a supervisor at the delivery shop, in reality, his salary wasn’t much higher than that of a hardworking deliveryman. If it had been 3,000 yuan, he could’ve barely managed it, but over 30,000? That was out of reach.
His reaction didn’t surprise the sales assistant. She wasn’t bothered by his change of heart.
“If you don’t have the means, don’t try to act rich,” she muttered under her breath as she turned away.
Her voice was just loud enough for Jia Nian to hear.
The blonde woman next to Jia Nian looked embarrassed, and Jia Nian himself was clearly uncomfortable. He had met the woman online and wanted to impress her by buying clothes together. But after running into Chu Feng and getting shown up like this, he felt utterly humiliated.
Feeling like he couldn’t stay any longer, Jia Nian gave up on browsing and left the mall.
“Yiyi, who was that guy just now? Do you know that big spender?” the blonde woman asked.
“I do know him, actually,” Yiyi replied. “But that ‘big boss’ used to be a deliveryman.”
“You’re kidding—are you sure?”
“I don’t think I got it wrong,” Yiyi said.
“A deliveryman with that kind of money? He must’ve spent over a million today with everything he bought.”
“Maybe he was shopping for someone else, or maybe… he won the lottery?” Yiyi offered.
“Whatever the case, we hit our monthly sales target thanks to him—what a relief,” Song Li said.
Yiyi nodded. “Customers like him are getting rarer and rarer. I wish a few more would show up.”
Song Li gave a bitter smile. “You’re telling me.” Business had been bad for physical retail shops. With hardly any foot traffic, even salesgirls were struggling.
Yiyi took a deep breath and said, “You don’t think he’ll come back tomorrow to return everything, do you?” More and more customers were returning clothes days after buying them.
Song Li shook her head. “Don’t worry. He won’t.”
Yiyi asked curiously, “How can you be so sure?”
Song Li smiled. “When he decided to buy, I asked if he wanted the tags removed. He said yes.”
Yiyi looked impressed. “Sister Li, you’re sharp.”
Without the tags, the clothes couldn’t be returned.
“Even if the tags weren’t cut, based on how he spent money today, he doesn’t look like someone short on cash,” Song Li said.
Yiyi nodded. “True. He seems pretty low-profile though.”
Song Li asked, “Why do you say that?”
“I heard he drives a Volkswagen,” Yiyi replied, tilting her head.
Song Li nodded. “That is low-key. But nothing wrong with a Volkswagen—maybe he just likes them.”
“Yeah, that’s possible,” Yiyi agreed.
Driving back from the mall with a car full of clothes and shoes, Chu Feng felt a subtle sense of excitement. No wonder so many girls love shopping—this feeling is pretty addictive.
Back at the villa, he tossed most of the clothes straight into the wardrobe, only picking out a few to try on.
Chu Feng sighed. He had originally planned to buy some children’s clothing too.
But once he started shopping, he got carried away and totally forgot. Over in Crescent Village, a lot of the kids were running around in fur skirts. Sometimes, they’d fall off while playing—it was honestly hard to watch.
The villagers didn’t seem to mind—after all, even adults there were frequently exposed.
Walking through Crescent Village, Chu Feng often felt like he was risking eye infections. So many beautiful people there, yet they were always dirty and disheveled—what a waste of good looks. But none of them seemed aware of it at all.
As Chu Feng was sorting clothes, his phone suddenly rang.
“Anzhi, what’s up?”
“Brother Feng,” Chu Anzhi asked suspiciously, “did you really buy hundreds of thousands worth of clothes?”
Chu Feng frowned and thought: Strictly speaking, it was 870,000… How did word spread so fast? “How do you know that?”
“Your old boss called Aunt Yan.”
“Old boss?” Chu Feng paused, then realized it must’ve been Jia Nian. “They know each other?”
Chu Feng remembered that Yan Ping had once gone to the delivery company looking for him. Maybe they met then.
“Cousin, even if you won a million, you shouldn’t spend it recklessly! Can you return those clothes? There’s still time—go return them!”
Chu Feng was about to think up another lie to explain it away, but then felt a bit tired of constantly lying and covering up. Maybe it was easier to just stop answering calls.
“Okay, okay, I get it. I’ll return them another day…”
“You have to return them!”
“Got it, got it.”
After hanging up, Chu Anzhi sighed helplessly.
“What did Xiao Feng say?” Gu Jia asked.
“Big Brother Feng said he’ll return the clothes.”
Gu Jia frowned. “What’s he thinking? Even if he won a million, he shouldn’t spend like that. Didn’t you see the news about that young woman who maxed out her credit cards shopping and ended up in jail when she couldn’t repay?”
Chu Anzhi rolled his eyes and said, “Mom, you’re overthinking it. Brother Feng isn’t the kind of person who doesn’t know his limits. If he’s spending like this, maybe it’s because he didn’t win just one million — maybe it was ten million.”
Gu Jia looked a little alarmed. “Don’t say things like that carelessly!”
Chu Anzhi shrugged. “I’m just guessing.”
Gu Jia thought for a moment and said, “Could he really have won one million? Xiao Feng hasn’t been home much lately. Maybe he even bought a house somewhere.”
Anzhi blinked. “Probably not.”
But he thought to himself: If Chu Feng really did buy a house, he wouldn’t be hiding it, right?
Then again, if he really had bought one, shouldn’t he have invited him over to take a look? He was genuinely curious what kind of house Chu Feng would buy if he did get one.
