Chapter 15: BMW 5 Series
At Chu Zhihong’s house, several people were gathered in discussion.
“A BMW 5 Series? That’s going to cost 200,000 more than we originally planned!” Zhihong said with concern.
Chu Jinhui replied, “Not really 200,000—just a bit over 100,000. As long as we put 50% down, it won’t make much difference.”
Yan Ping frowned. “Aren’t they both BMWs? Why does it have to be the expensive one?”
She thought to herself: These country folks just look at the brand. Don’t they know the difference between a 3 Series and a 5 Series? The 3 is already impressive enough.
Chu Jinhui said indifferently, “Xiaoyue’s cousin’s family bought a 5 Series. She doesn’t want to feel inferior.”
Zhihong looked troubled. “We just bought a house. Getting a 5 Series on top of that might be tough.”
Jinhui didn’t seem concerned. “The down payment is just 200,000. We’ll pay off the rest slowly. I work for a Fortune 500 company—Dad, are you worried I won’t be able to pay the loan? As for the down payment, just borrow a bit from Uncle’s family. Anzhi’s not getting married anytime soon, so what’s the point of saving money?”
Zhihong sighed. “Your uncle’s being very firm this time—he’s not keen on lending.”
Yan Ping looked at him and said, “Son, doesn’t your girlfriend come from money? I heard from your aunt that the handbag she used last time cost tens of thousands. Shouldn’t it be easy for her to chip in a bit?”
Jinhui snapped, annoyed, “Mom, what are you talking about? We’re not even married yet—how could I ask her for money?”
Yan Ping gave a sheepish laugh. “Isn’t her family rich, though?”
Chu Jinhui said irritably: “Xiaoyue is an only child. After marrying her, everything in her family will naturally be mine. But right now, we’re not even married yet, are we?”
Seeing that Chu Jinhui was getting upset, Yan Ping quickly changed the subject.
“Didn’t you go out with Anzhi today? How come he came back with Chu Feng instead?”
Chu Jinhui frowned and said, “We ran into Chu Feng when buying a car, and he left with him.”
Yan Ping’s face darkened. “I heard from Gu Jia that Chu Feng bought a Volkswagen, and on a loan too. Probably threw in all the money he’s made over the past few years.”
Chu Zhihong frowned. “That kind of Volkswagen isn’t cheap, is it?”
“No, it cost 250,000!”
Chu Jinhui said with disdain, “That guy loves to put on airs. Someone like him should’ve just bought a car for seventy or eighty thousand. What’s the point of someone delivering packages driving a fancy car? Is he planning to deliver packages in a Volkswagen?”
Yan Ping said unhappily, “Maybe Chu Feng heard we were planning to borrow money from him and deliberately bought a car to avoid lending it.”
Chu Zhihong’s face turned gloomy. “That kid’s never had much ambition, and he’s always had a bad temper.”
Chu Jinhui frowned. “Dad, even a high school grad like Chu Feng has a Volkswagen. I can’t fall behind.”
Zhihong sighed. “Got it.”
Yan Ping said with a dark face, “Trying to borrow money from your third uncle is getting nowhere. Looks like we can’t count on him.”
Zhihong hesitated and said, “If we really can’t count on your uncle, then we might have to sell that shop.”
Yan Ping frowned. “Sell the shop? That shop’s a goose that lays golden eggs!”
Zhihong sighed. “But look at how much it’s going to cost for Jinhui’s wedding right now.”
Yan Ping looked hesitant.
“That shop was paid for by your parents too. If we sell it, won’t they have something to say?”
Jinhui chuckled and said, “Mom, don’t worry about that. I’ll talk to Grandpa and Grandma.”
Yan Ping added, “Try again with your uncle. If it really doesn’t work out, we can still sell the shop later.”
Zhihong nodded. “Alright.”
