Chapter 116: Guests from the Capital

“The appearance of superpowered people has driven everyone crazy,” Lin Zhihao said with a sigh.

Chu Feng nodded. “Seems like it.”

After all, there had always been tons of superhero movies. American heroes had always been wildly popular. Now that dreams were becoming reality, how could people not go crazy?

“Brother Feng, do you want to become a superpowered person?” Lin Zhihao asked.

Chu Feng smiled. “Of course.” No need to even think—he was one. “What about you?”

Lin Zhihao nodded. “Definitely. If I could choose, I’d want the power to turn things into gold.”

Chu Feng: “…” Turning things to gold? That is a great power. “I think you’re dreaming.”

Lin Zhihao nodded. “Who isn’t?”

Chu Feng: “…” At least my cousin is self-aware, even if he dreams big.

Chu Feng glanced at Illya and asked curiously, “Do people in your world have that power—turning things into gold?”

Illya shook his head. “Nope.”

Chu Feng: “…” He didn’t think so either. If someone did have that power, they’d be filthy rich by now.

“Although many superpowered people are amazing, being one comes with serious risks,” Lin Zhihao said in a hushed tone. “Some organizations are hunting them down. There’ve already been many cases of people being taken, and some probably died on operating tables.”

Chu Feng: “…” Superpowers might sound glamorous, but in reality, many powered individuals weren’t that strong. Against modern weapons, they didn’t stand a chance.

Lin Zhihao looked at Chu Feng. “Lots of people online are now openly claiming to be powered. Some wealthy folks have even offered annual salaries of over ten million to hire them.”

Chu Feng looked surprised. “Ten million a year? That much?”

Lin Zhihao chuckled. “It’s not that much. Think about it, Brother Feng! We’re talking about superpowered people. Lots of celebrities earn over a hundred million a year.”

Chu Feng nodded—it made sense. There were plenty of poor people in the world, but just as many rich ones. He’d heard about a tycoon spending millions on a wedding, hiring over a dozen D-list celebrities just to liven things up. So, ten million for a powered individual didn’t seem that crazy.

Chu Feng thought for a moment and said, “Let’s keep the wood carving shop closed for now.” Even though he’d brought a lot of wood carvings, things were a little too tense at the moment—it was better to wait and see.

Lin Zhihao nodded. “That’s probably for the best.”

He frowned slightly. Something about those carvings still seemed a little off to him. Lately, the customers had all been acting strangely. They’d already made plenty of money—no harm in slowing down.

Chu Feng looked at Lin Zhihao and asked, “There’s just one other employee, right? Give them a 20,000 yuan bonus.”

After all, when he made big money, it was only right to let others share a bit of the soup. Lin Zhihao nodded. “Okay.”

*

After a short chat, Lin Zhihao left.

Illya tilted his head. “He left at the worst time! Just as he left, the delivery arrived.”

Chu Feng: “…” His cousin probably wasn’t a big fan of takeout anyway. Given his current wealth, that made sense.

“You eat slowly.”

Illya nodded. “Okay.”

Chu Feng pulled out the witch stone. Compared to when he first got it, it seemed to have shrunk a bit.

Illya munched on pizza, eyeing Chu Feng suspiciously. “What are you thinking? You look pale.”

Chu Feng shook his head. “I was just thinking… my power’s only good for running away.”

If he ever ran into an offensive-type ability user, he’d be at a disadvantage. With all the new powers emerging, someone might eventually develop a detection-type ability—and then, if they found him, he’d be in trouble.

But… as long as he ran fast enough, survival wouldn’t be a problem.

Illya tilted his head. “Maybe you do have offensive potential. You just haven’t figured out how to use it yet.”

“Maybe…”

Chu Feng thought about it. Since he had space powers, maybe he could create some kind of spatial slash. Thinking that, he tried swiping at a teacup on the table—but the cup didn’t budge, perfectly unharmed.

He stared at his hand and sighed. So it doesn’t work after all?

Some kids could flip cars already, and he couldn’t even break a teacup? That was kind of pathetic.

Then again, Chu Feng felt a little better. Sure, lots of people had superpowers now—but he was probably the only one who could travel to another world.

Compared to those without any abilities, he was already quite lucky.

If he could find a continuous supply of witch stones, using Spatial Slash was just a matter of time.

Chu Feng browsed the internet and looked through some forum posts. There were all sorts of rumors about people encountering ability users—some believable, others completely bizarre. A few people even claimed to be ability users themselves, calling themselves the “new humans” of the new era.

The “doomsday theory” was gaining traction online again. Many believed the appearance of ability users signaled the end times, urging others to stockpile food. It seemed quite a few people believed it, sparking a wave of panic buying.

Illya looked at Chu Feng and asked, “What are you thinking about?”

Chu Feng shook his head. “Nothing much, just feeling like the world is about to change.”

Illya puffed up her cheeks and said, “The world is always changing.”

Chu Feng glanced at her and thought: Straight to the point. The influence of ability users would likely keep growing. Who knew what the future would look like?

No matter how the world outside changed, he just wanted to live his quiet, simple life.

Online, some ability users were shouting about how they were going to dominate the world, as if gaining powers had suddenly made them the protagonists of this era—destined for greatness and legendary achievements.

Chu Feng couldn’t help but shake his head. In the end, this world was still mostly made up of ordinary people. And many ability users had serious limitations to their powers.

Suddenly, a thought struck Chu Feng. “Illya, is it true that when two ability users have children, it’s more likely the child will also have powers?”

Illya looked at him, puzzled. “Why are you asking that?”

“Isn’t that how it works?”

Illya puffed her cheeks again. “Ability users can’t have children.”

Chu Feng: “…”

Seriously? Ability users can’t have offspring?

Chu Feng looked at her and asked, “Are you sure you’re not mistaken?”

Illya shook her head. “Nope, that’s just how it is. Where I come from, ability users don’t have descendants.”

Chu Feng: “…”

Ever since being with Illya, he’d already set aside thoughts of having children. But now he learned that ability users weren’t able to reproduce at all? And yet so many were still dreaming about world domination. If they knew they couldn’t even pass on their legacy…

Chu Feng: “…”

He shook his head and thought: Maybe it’s not worth overthinking. I already gave up on that idea. What they should be worried about are those so-called ‘supermen’ who think the world is now theirs for the taking.

Chu Feng looked at Illya. “Let’s go to the warehouse. Another shipment of your orders arrived. Let’s send off a batch.”

Illya nodded quickly. “Okay! Okay!”

Chu Feng thought: He really did buy a ton of stuff. If we don’t send some to the other world soon, the warehouse is going to overflow. With his current ability, he could make two round trips between the real world and the other world in one day.

Illya followed Chu Feng to the warehouse and looked around with some confusion. “There’s already so much stuff piled up?”

Chu Feng glanced at her but swallowed the words “You bought all this”.

“Let’s pack everything up and send it over,” he said.

Illya nodded. “Okay.”

Chu Feng had noticed that the more he used his powers, the more skilled he became. Right now, he could manage two round trips between worlds in a day. But doing so left him extremely tired and physically drained. Still, after pushing through, his ability would improve slightly each time.

“They’re here.” Hall, who was waiting in the other world, looked excited as Chu Feng and Illya appeared.

“Boss, should we unpack and sort everything?” Chu Feng nodded. “Yes. Once everything is sorted, make a detailed list.”

Hall was thrilled as he nodded. “Got it. Got it.”

Even though the supplies technically belonged to his boss, being involved in managing them was exciting in itself.

Illya looked at Chu Feng. “Let’s rest a bit, then head back.”

Chu Feng nodded. “Alright.”

Illya tilted her head. “I’ve still got lots of things that haven’t arrived. I wonder how much will be there when we get back.”

Chu Feng: “…”

He really can shop!

Manning and the others had already started unpacking the deliveries. Manning opened a box and found it full of gloves. “So many gloves!”

Illya nodded. “The weather’s getting colder. Better to be prepared.”

Manning looked at the gloves excitedly. Winters were brutally cold, and he often got frostbite on his hands. With these gloves, maybe this year would be better.

Illya had brought over a lot of stuff. To Chu Feng, most of it was just small items, so he didn’t pay much attention and went to rest in a corner to recover his strength.

The Crescent Woodcarving Shop had closed down, so Chu Feng was now half a jobless drifter. He spent his days either shopping online with Illya or watching cartoons and studying Chinese with her.

Illya had already learned some Chinese, but the time had been short, so he couldn’t understand much yet.

He also realized that with Illya’s status, it was best to stay low-key in this world. Going out and attracting attention might bring trouble.

As they chatted, Chu Feng’s phone rang.

He answered, and his expression changed.

Illya asked, puzzled, “What is it? Something happened again?”

Chu Feng looked at her and said, “Someone from the military came looking for my third uncle. Seems like a big shot.”

Illya tilted her head. “Why would a big shot want to see him?”

Chu Feng shook his head. “No idea. I’m going to check it out.” He took a deep breath and thought: Uncle has always been low-profile, just an average, unremarkable guy. If he’s attracted a big shot’s attention… something must be going on.

Illya frowned and said, “I’ll go with you.”

Chu Feng nodded and said, “I’ll go by myself.” The people who came were from the military! Illya was undocumented — for someone like him, it was best to keep a low profile.

Illya puffed out his cheeks and looked at Chu Feng, clearly unhappy. Chu Feng rubbed his head and said, “If you really want to go, then fine, but don’t show yourself.”

Illya nodded. “Okay.”
