The Popular Wood

Chapter 114: The Popular Wood

Chu Feng had just rested at home for a while when he received a call from his third uncle, Chu Linsheng. Chu Anzhi had recovered his health, and Chu Linsheng wanted to invite Chu Feng to a meal to show his gratitude.

Chu Linsheng hesitantly suggested that Chu Feng could bring Illya along. When he heard that, Chu Anzhi felt quite pleased. In a way, this meal could count as Illya meeting the family. Although Chu Feng didn’t particularly care about others’ opinions, getting relatives’ approval was always a good thing.

Illya looked at Chu Feng and asked, “What’s up?”

Chu Feng shook his head. “Nothing. Do you want to go out for dinner with me tonight?”

Illya tilted her head. “Will there be good food?”

Chu Feng nodded. “There should be!”

Illya nodded. “Okay, I’m in.”

Chu Feng thought to himself, Illya’s been here for so long, yet he still can’t resist food. He must be really easy to trick!

Chu Linsheng chose an ordinary restaurant that wasn’t too crowded.

“Is Uncle and his family not coming?” Chu Anzhi asked.

Chu Linsheng’s expression shifted. “I didn’t invite him.”

Chu Feng thought for a moment and roughly understood what was going on. He smiled. “Then let’s eat first.”

Chu Linsheng nodded. “Sure.”

Chu Anzhi kept glancing at Chu Feng, wanting to say something but holding back.

Chu Feng looked at him and asked, “What is it?”

“Cousin, what skincare products are you using? Your skin looks so much better—can’t even see your pores!” Chu Anzhi said.

Times had changed. People used to admire rugged men; now, delicate-looking pretty boys were more popular. Men wearing makeup had become common.

Chu Feng glanced at him. “I didn’t use any skincare products.”

“Really?” Chu Anzhi looked doubtful. “I thought since you’re rich now, you might’ve bought one of those fancy one-grand miracle water sets.”

How could expensive skincare products compare to Witch Stones? Chu Feng thought.

Chu Anzhi couldn’t help but say, “Cousin, you look way too youthful now!”

Chu Feng said smugly, “Right? I think so too. Now when we walk together, people might even think I’m younger than you.”

Chu Anzhi: “No need to rub it in!”

Chu Linsheng looked at the two with a smile. “Xiao Feng, we really owe you for Anzhi this time.”

Chu Feng replied, “Anzhi is a lucky guy. It’s not because of me.”

Linsheng smiled. “He was barely responsive at first, but after you visited, he suddenly recovered. That proves you’re a lucky star!”

Chu Feng smiled. “Really?”

He’d been called a jinx behind his back many times, and now suddenly he was a “lucky star.” He looked at Chu Linsheng and figured his uncle might have guessed something, but Chu Feng didn’t explain further.

Initially, Linsheng didn’t think much about linking his son’s recovery to Chu Feng. He assumed it was the doctors. But later, when two of Anzhi’s classmates’ parents heard he was recovering, they rushed to ask the doctors for advice—and nothing worked on their kids. Those parents kept pestering Linsheng, asking if he had given Anzhi some special treatment. Linsheng was completely confused.

He claimed Anzhi had recovered naturally. But later, even the doctors subtly questioned whether Anzhi had consumed something, as there were unidentified residues in his bloodwork. Linsheng didn’t think much of it at first but eventually suspected that Chu Feng might have something to do with it.

Ever since Chu Feng won the lottery, he had become mysterious. Linsheng figured maybe his nephew hadn’t just won the lottery, but met some kind of powerful figure.

He looked at Anzhi and casually asked, “So, how long do you plan to keep resting at home?”

Anzhi frowned, took a deep breath, and said, “I’ll go back to school in a few days.”

Chu Feng looked puzzled. “Why the sudden change of heart?”

Hadn’t he just said he wanted to rest for half a year?

Ah, youth—always changing their minds.

Anzhi shook his head. “It feels weird staying at home. It’s so empty here. And I’m basically all better now.”

Back when he was critically ill in the capital, Uncle’s family stayed far away. Now that he was better, his aunt kept visiting, saying his dad overreacted, and even questioned whether he was expelled from school and hiding at home.

After a few days at home, Anzhi figured the drama had passed. Hiding to avoid getting his blood drawn wasn’t a solution either.

Chu Feng thought for a moment and said, “That’s true.”

Everyone else had jobs; the only ones left in the village were elderly folks. It really wasn’t suitable for someone young like Anzhi to stay home all the time.

“Cousin, did you hear? They found an ancient tomb in Ghost Village—and a ton of scorpions came out of it!”

Chu Feng glanced at him. “Why are you still paying attention to that stuff?”

Anzhi replied helplessly, “It’s not me, it’s my classmates. They keep messaging me.”

“What else did they say?”

Anzhi frowned. “They said the tomb was hidden really deep, and normally wouldn’t have been found. But two tomb robbers blew up the entrance.”

Now, the Ghost Village area had been sealed off by the military. Many people went in wearing protective suits, face masks, and full gear to explore the tomb.

Chu Feng nodded, thinking to himself, That’s a good approach. No matter how venomous the scorpions are, if they can’t get through the suits, they’re useless. When the government steps in, things really move.

Anzhi rested his chin on his hand. “That day, we might’ve run into the tomb robbers.”

Chu Feng furrowed his brows. “When you get back to school, just focus on studying and stay away from all that crazy stuff.”

Anzhi nodded. “I think the same. After what happened last time, even if I wanted to get involved, I wouldn’t dare!”

Chu Feng looked at Anzhi, thinking: He seems like an honest kid, but who knows if he really is—or if he’s just putting on an act.

At the shop “Crescent Wood,” someone called out: “Time to settle the bill. I’ll take everything in the store.”

“Why? I was here first.”

“I paid first, so everything is mine.”

“You’re not the only one with money! I’ll pay double. Boss, sell me all the wood carvings in the shop.”

Lin Zhihao pressed his lips together, his heart pounding. The shop hadn’t restocked in a while. After Chu Anzhi’s accident, Lin Zhihao had called Chu Feng to ask for more stock. Chu Feng said the supply was running low. Since there wasn’t enough to sell, he suggested raising the prices.

Although Lin Zhihao thought Chu Feng’s decision was a bit harsh, he agreed it wasn’t a bad idea. So, he doubled the prices both online and in-store.

Strangely, Lin Zhihao felt that people tend to be drawn to what’s expensive. After doubling the prices online, even more customers showed up. Probably afraid prices would rise again, they hurried to buy.

Chu Feng had previously said he’d take a 20% cut of online profits. If that was accurate, Lin Zhihao figured Chu Feng was now a multimillionaire.

Looking at the two men arguing in front of him, Lin Zhihao felt torn.

One looked like a Taoist shaman in a full robe; the other like a feng shui master in a Zhongshan suit. Both seemed like they weren’t easy to mess with.

Lin Zhihao had noticed before that the people buying from the online shop often had weird usernames and didn’t seem like ordinary people. More like high-end consultants hired by the rich.

He thought to himself, Aren’t “masters” supposed to be aloof and otherworldly? Why are these two fighting over some wooden carvings like common fishwives? So undignified.

“Young man, I’m from the Zhengyi sect. If you sell me all the wood carvings, my sect can owe you a favor.”

Lin Zhihao: “Zhengyi sect? Never heard of it. Doesn’t sound reliable.”

“Young man, my surname is Xu. I’m quite well-known in the feng shui world. If you sell them to me, I’ll give you a free feng shui reading.”

Lin Zhihao: “…” That sounded just as shady as the last offer. He knew some real feng shui masters who charged tens of thousands or even millions for consultations, but honestly, he didn’t think he needed one.

“Gentlemen, how about this — there’s plenty of stuff in the store, why not—”

The two men exchanged glances, clearly each wanting the whole lot to themselves.

Lin Zhihao smiled and said, “Actually, business has been booming lately. If you don’t make a decision soon, more customers might arrive.”

Their expressions changed slightly, and after some hesitation, they reluctantly agreed to split the stock.

Lin Zhihao and Zhou Jin handled the checkout. Over half an hour later, every item in the store was sold. The two “masters” got what they wanted and each left in a hurry.

Zhou Jin furrowed his brow and muttered, “Finally gone!”

Lin Zhihao nodded. “Yeah. I wonder if they’re actually real masters. They gave off a lot of pressure.”

Zhou Jin responded without hesitation: “They definitely were. One of them paid with a black card.”

Lin Zhihao blinked. “Oh right!” A black card wasn’t something ordinary people could get — anyone who had one was either rich or powerful.

“These wood carvings are insanely popular…” Zhou Jin thought to himself: This store is doing way better than I expected. When I first arrived, I thought the owner had lost his mind. Who opens a shop like this? I figured it wouldn’t last long. But the carvings here are in demand like real estate in hot zones.

Lin Zhihao squinted. Lately, things had been getting strange outside — more and more unusual people kept showing up.

The carvings in the shop seemed to be made of special materials, and for fortune-tellers or diviners, they might serve some unusual purpose.

Zhou Jin turned to Lin Zhihao and asked, “So, everything’s sold out. Are we still opening tomorrow?”

Lin Zhihao gave a bitter smile. “There’s nothing left to sell. We’ll have to wait for restock. I’ll let you know when we get more.”

Zhou Jin nodded. “Alright.”
