Chapter 62
Inside the nutrient chamber, Number Four opened his eyes, a hint of confusion appearing in his gaze.
The liquid surrounding him felt like water, submerging him completely. In front of him, he seemed to see a figure emanating a faint golden glow…
The figure’s eyes were gentle as it gazed at him. When he saw it, an inexplicable sense of warmth and familiarity arose from deep within his heart.
Who is that?
Number Four struggled to see clearly, but when he opened his eyes wide, the first thing that entered his view was a stranger—a man dressed in white, wearing glasses, standing outside a small glass window.
The boy finally became aware of his situation.
Where is this place? What does this man want with him?
Panic surged within him. He began yanking the components attached to his body, pulling them apart. Wires that connected to various parts of him snapped and fell away.
In the struggle, the oxygen tube was also torn off. Number Four felt the suffocating sensation of losing air, and his survival instincts kicked in. He instinctively held his breath and began slamming against the walls of the nutrient chamber with all his strength.
The alarms in the laboratory blared instantly.
Amid the deafening noise, Ren Yufei’s face turned grim. Seeing that the glass of the nutrient chamber was on the verge of shattering under Number Four’s blows, he had no choice but to order, “Open the chamber door.”
“Yes!”
Under the control of the assistant researcher, the glass door of the nutrient chamber slowly split open from the middle. The liquid that had filled the chamber poured out with a loud gushing sound.
The rush of water carried the young boy’s frail body, sending him crashing onto the floor.
Drenched from head to toe, his hair was plastered to his skin, and the white experimental suit he wore clung tightly to his body.
The moment he hit the ground, the boy rolled instinctively, landing on all fours like a wild beast. His amber-brown eyes gleamed with vigilance as he scanned his surroundings.
Outside the nutrient chamber was a small, isolated room surrounded by thick metal walls. Only a single glass window allowed those outside to observe the interior.
Number Four fixated on that window, baring his teeth fiercely before suddenly lunging forward. His fists pounded against the glass with all his might.
“Let me out!” he roared angrily.
Watching the boy’s violent and frenzied display through the window, Ren Yufei wasn’t concerned about the specially-made glass breaking, but his face still looked sour.
The cubs at the nursery were so difficult to control!
He pressed a button on the control panel, and his voice rang through the room. “Number Four, calm down. I know your bloodline power hasn’t gone berserk.”
He had detailed records and data; he knew this child could still be reasoned with through words. He was also well aware of Number Four’s temperament and weaknesses.
“With your strength, you won’t be able to shatter that glass. If you keep this up, you’ll only end up hurting yourself.”
However, Number Four didn’t stop after hearing his voice. Instead, he pounded the glass even harder. Even when his knuckles split open and blood began to smear the surface, he refused to stop.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The room echoed with the sound of relentless pounding.
Su Ci glanced at the boy and then at the cold-faced Dr. Ren standing behind the control panel. After a moment’s thought, he looked at the glass again.
A faint golden glow flashed in his eyes.
Bang—!
With a crisp cracking sound, the supposedly unbreakable glass began to splinter, spreading outwards in a web-like pattern from the boy’s fist.
Ren’s cold demeanor shifted to shock. The next moment, the boy’s fist smashed through the weakest point in the glass!
Due to its special composition, the glass shards stuck together and did not scatter, avoiding secondary injury. However, the enraged lion-eared boy had already burst out of the small room, launching himself directly at Ren Yufei.
“Doctor!”
The assistant researcher cried out in panic, but Ren had no time to react. The boy’s whip-like lion tail swept across his legs, tripping him. As he fell to the ground, the boy’s vice-like hands clamped tightly around his vulnerable neck.
Everything happened so quickly that, before the alarms could sound, Number Four had already overpowered Ren Yufei.
The boy’s eyes were bloodshot, filled with hatred as he glared at the man pinned beneath him. He opened his mouth and lunged at Ren Yufei’s throat, ready to tear him apart.
However, just before he could rip the flesh, Ren Yufei managed to choke out, “Number Five!”
The boy’s teeth had already broken the surface of his skin, but upon hearing those words, he stopped.
Su Ci, crouched nearby, withdrew his soul power in surprise.
He watched the lion-eared boy, whose hands were still wrapped tightly around Ren Yufei’s neck. Slowly, the boy raised his head, pulling back and away from Ren Yufei.
Ren Yufei’s neck bore two bloody puncture wounds, with blood seeping out. Any deeper, and his trachea might have been torn open.
The boy’s amber-brown eyes had transformed into beastly pupils. Stimulated by the scent of blood, fine fur sprouted on his face, and his beast-like traits intensified.
Yet in his gaze, humanity and primal instinct waged a fierce battle.
The boy let out low, pained growls, veins bulging visibly on his neck. His hands, still clamped around Ren Yufei’s throat, trembled but refused to let go.
Ren Yufei’s face flushed crimson from lack of air, his hands gripping the boy’s desperately. He could no longer produce any sound from his throat.
“Doctor!” The assistant researcher frantically pressed the alarm, but he dared not intervene.
Just when it seemed certain that Ren Yufei would die, the beastly look in the lion-eared boy’s eyes began to recede. In the final moment, before Ren Yufei could suffocate, the boy loosened his grip.
The boy’s pupils gradually returned to their human, round shape, though the hatred in his gaze showed no signs of abating.
“Where is my sister?”
He grabbed Ren Yufei’s collar and roared angrily, his young voice trembling with fury. He was like a caged beast, momentarily freed from his chains, yet unable to exact revenge on the humans who had imprisoned him.
“Dr. Ren!”
The guards finally burst into the room, their guns raised and aimed at Number Four. Red laser sights targeted his vital points, covering his small, tense frame.
Noticing the situation, Ren Yufei forced himself to ignore his discomfort.
“Stand down! Everyone put your guns down!” he shouted hoarsely.
The guards exchanged uncertain glances but ultimately obeyed the order, lowering their weapons.
Even though he had almost been strangled to death, Ren Yufei’s gaze toward Number Four held no resentment. Instead, there was a twisted kind of affection, a sickly indulgence.
“Good child, have you calmed down now?” he asked softly, staring into the boy’s blazing eyes, though in his mind, he had already reached his conclusion.
Although Number Four shattering the reinforced glass had surprised him, the outcome had satisfied him greatly.
“Where is my sister!” Number Four repeated, his voice full of unrelenting fury as he tightened his grip on Ren Yufei’s collar.
Ren Yufei’s lips curved slightly into a gentle smile. “Good child, let go of me first—”
Bang!
Number Four slammed him down hard, the back of Ren Yufei’s head smacking against the floor with a dull thud. The assistant researcher and guards instinctively stepped forward, alarmed.
Despite the searing pain and dizziness, Ren Yufei raised a hand to stop them, signaling that they shouldn’t interfere.
Number Four grabbed his collar again, his sharp, piercing gaze locking onto Ren Yufei as he growled, his voice dripping with hatred and violence, “I’ll ask one last time: where is my sister?”
Ren Yufei rubbed the back of his throbbing head, forcing himself to recover. With a faint smile tugging at his lips, he replied, “If you still want to see her, the best thing you can do right now is cooperate with us and complete the next stage of the experiment.”
Number Four glared coldly at him. “Give me back my sister, or I’ll kill you!”
The lion-eared boy’s voice was filled with chilling menace, a tone that left no doubt about the sincerity of his threat.
The guards once again raised their weapons, nervous and ready to fire. Although Dr. Ren had ordered them to hold their fire, they knew that if something truly happened to him, they would be held accountable. If the boy made a single hostile move, they would shoot.
“Calm down, don’t be so agitated,” Ren Yufei said, remarkably composed despite his injuries. Forcing himself to sit up, he continued, “If you want to see Number Five, I can bring her here. But… can you really bear to let her leave the nursery and live with you out there?”
As he spoke, Ren Yufei called upon the base’s central AI. After quickly verifying his access, he pulled up the surveillance feed for Nursery Room 404.
On the screen, a little girl had climbed out of bed and was now sitting at her small table, scribbling on paper with colored pencils. Her hair was still a tangled mess, but her mood appeared to have stabilized.
Number Four stared at the surveillance footage, his grip on Ren Yufei’s collar loosening unconsciously.
“…My sister,” he murmured, his voice trembling.
At that exact moment, as if sensing something, the little girl in the feed paused and lifted her head. She glanced toward the camera with her tear-streaked, amber-brown eyes, her small lion-like ears twitching slightly. Her eyes were swollen and red, evidence that she had recently cried, and even the tip of her nose was pink.
A look of anguish crossed the boy’s face. “She… she’s been crying… My sister needs me! I want to see her!”
Seeing Number Four’s emotions flare up again, Ren Yufei coughed violently before nodding.
Through gritted teeth, he said, “Alright! You want to see her? Fine. I’ll go to the nursery and bring her here right now!”
Although the research institute technically lacked the authority to fulfill such a promise, Ren Yufei knew exactly how to calm Number Four’s emotions and guide him into making the “right” decision.
As expected, Number Four’s agitation slowly subsided. He stared coldly at Ren Yufei for a moment before turning his gaze back to the surveillance feed. On the screen, the little girl had lowered her head again, quietly leaning over the table to continue drawing.
Number Five—she was raised entirely by Number Four.
When they arrived at the nursery, he had been only four years old, and Number Five wasn’t even a year old yet. Back then, she was just a tiny baby in a crib, only able to crawl.
He had held his sister to sleep every day, taught her to stand, to walk, and to speak… The siblings had grown up together, depending on each other in the nursery.
To Number Four, Number Five was the most obedient and adorable sister in the world. She was his most precious family member, and his greatest wish was for her to live a happy and carefree life.
He couldn’t stand to see her cry. If she cried, he would feel equally miserable.
Even though the nursery was also a place of confinement, it was still her home. She had her favorite caretaker robots there, could play with toys in the activity room every day, and could sit peacefully in her room and draw.
But if she were brought to this unfamiliar place…
Number Four looked up, his gaze sweeping over the guards who watched him warily, their faces filled with caution and hostility. Finally, his eyes landed on Ren Yufei.
The man’s face bore an expression of feigned earnestness and condescending kindness, as if he would immediately fulfill his promise to fetch Number Five as long as Number Four agreed.
Disgust and revulsion surged through Number Four. Without hesitation, he raised his fist and punched Ren Yufei square in the face.
Thud!
The punch landed solidly, a dull sound echoing in the room.
This time, Ren Yufei could no longer maintain his composure. He clutched his mouth, curling up in pain, while the guards and the assistant researcher winced instinctively, their faces contorting as though they themselves had felt the impact.
Number Four’s expression had already returned to calm.
He stood up, coldly looking down at Ren Yufei with not a trace of pity in his eyes. Without warning, he lifted his foot and kicked him again—this time, even harder!
Ren Yufei’s anguished cries filled the room. Only then did the guards snap out of their stupor and rush forward to pull him away. As for Number Four, none of them dared to touch him without Ren Yufei’s direct order.
After a moment, Ren Yufei finally regained his composure. He spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, revealing a tooth among the crimson spittle—Number Four had actually knocked out one of his front teeth!
Suppressing his fury, Ren Yufei turned to the assistant researcher and muttered, “Go to the nursery…”
His voice whistled slightly, distorted by the missing tooth.
“There’s no need,” Number Four said in a low, firm voice. “You’re not allowed to disturb my sister!”
Number Four didn’t yet understand this place, nor was he confident he could escape with his own strength. If Number Five were dragged into this, he would have even less ability to protect her and ensure her safety.
For now, Number Five was safe in the nursery. Although she would still be used as leverage against him, at least she wouldn’t suffer any actual harm.
At the very least, if he found a way to escape, he could go back and find her. During this time, she could live in peace, without having to endure the fear and anxiety that he did.
After careful consideration, Number Four made his decision.
“If you want me to cooperate, fine—but I need to see my sister’s image every day!”
Number Four clenched his fists tightly. His hands were still covered in blood from smashing the glass window earlier, but he seemed oblivious to the pain, showing no signs of weakness.
“Of course, that can be arranged!” Ren Yufei smiled, though he quickly closed his mouth upon remembering his broken front tooth.
“Let me ask again—are you sure you don’t want me to bring Number Five here?” Ren Yufei prodded. He knew that Number Four was a devoted brother. The more reluctant he was to mention Number Five, the more Ren Yufei pressed the issue.
“I said no!”
Number Four roared angrily, baring his teeth in a menacing snarl.
Ren Yufei knew that, if not for Number Five, the boy would have torn his throat out without hesitation. Fortunately… it was Number Four who had awakened this ability.
This child had a weakness none of the other cubs did.
“For now, let’s take care of those injuries,” Ren Yufei said, trying to adopt a friendly tone. After all, there were still a series of experiments to conduct, and the smoother the boy cooperated, the easier it would be to make progress.
“Don’t worry,” he continued, his voice measured. “The experiments won’t harm you. Everything will be conducted under the premise of ensuring your safety. And even if an accident were to occur, we have the most advanced medical pods in the galaxy here. They can heal 99% of injuries.”
Ren Yufei’s goal was clear: he needed to determine the cause of the boy’s object-manipulation ability. Whether it was triggered by the red mist or due to Number Four possessing dual bloodline powers, it was an invaluable research opportunity.
“In fact, cooperating with me will benefit you as well,” Ren Yufei added seriously. “You’re showing signs of extreme berserk tendencies. If this continues unchecked, once you surpass the threshold, you’ll lose your mind completely and turn into a mindless beast.”
Of course, Ren Yufei had considered the risks. The purpose of restarting the Nursery Project was to cultivate super soldiers—children who possessed both bloodline powers and awakened abilities. Once they established a stable method for triggering such abilities, it could be extended to other cubs of beast bloodlines.
However, under the law protecting cubs, the research institute couldn’t directly interfere with the nursery’s operations. Besides, they were scientists—most of them weren’t even married, let alone experienced in raising children.
Thus, the care of the cubs had to be entrusted to professionals. Unfortunately, progress had been far from satisfactory.
The increasingly volatile behavior of the cubs weighed heavily on Ren Yufei. If this continued, the project could face complete failure.
Number Four had given him hope—a breakthrough. No matter what, he couldn’t allow Number Four to be harmed.
Looking at the boy, Ren Yufei continued, his words cruel and manipulative: “When you become a mindless beast, your feelings for Number Five will disappear. When you see her, you won’t see your sister—you’ll only see food. You’ll want to eat her, to satisfy your hunger…”
“Shut up!”
The boy roared like a lion, his voice reverberating through the room. His eyes burned red with fury, but it was clear he was struggling to restrain himself.
Ren Yufei knew his words had struck a nerve. The boy was afraid.
He was pleased with the result.
“Take him back to his room and treat his injuries,” Ren Yufei instructed the guards.
The two guards hesitated before stepping forward. Though they were on high alert, Number Four didn’t attack. He stood motionless, his posture stiff and tense.
“Number Four?” Ren Yufei prompted.
The boy—just over eight years old—seemed like a creature covered in thorns, ready to pierce anyone who came near. The savage strength and domineering presence of a lion were already beginning to show, yet… Number Four clenched his fists tightly.
If he truly turned into a beast, what would happen to Number Five?
At last, forcing himself to move, the boy stepped forward and followed the guards to the room assigned to him in the research institute.
As for Ren Yufei, after breathing a sigh of relief, his body finally gave out, and he fainted.
The room descended into chaos as people rushed to carry the unconscious Dr. Ren away for medical treatment. Amid the flurry of activity, no one noticed Su Ci standing quietly to the side, observing the entire scene.
A flash of movement, and Su Ci appeared in Number Four’s room.
Just as the guards were about to tend to the boy’s wounds, Number Four suddenly exploded in anger. He snatched the medical spray from their hands and drove them out of the room.
Now alone, the boy curled up in the corner, silently treating his bloody hands with the spray. His solitary figure looked both stubborn and filled with quiet resilience.
Su Ci sighed softly.
Why were none of these cubs ever easy to deal with?
“Who’s there?”
The boy’s sharp senses kicked in as he lifted his head, scanning the room warily.
Su Ci looked at him with faint curiosity. This little lion cub—able to detect him—was indeed promising, though his temper was just as explosive as a young tiger’s.
Still, he had something Number Two didn’t: a younger sister. The human part of his heart was far more prominent than the tiger cub’s.
Number Four stood up and scanned the room, his sharp gaze sweeping every corner, but he found nothing.
Was it just his imagination?
He sat back down in the corner, deep in thought. In a low voice, he murmured, “You were the one who helped me earlier, weren’t you?”
Though unwilling to admit it, Number Four knew Ren Yufei wasn’t entirely wrong. With his current ability, there was no way he could have shattered that reinforced glass.
The reason he had managed to do so…
Number Four recalled the strange feeling he’d had. On the second-to-last strike, he’d noticed the glass growing weaker, almost fragile under his fists.
The image of the person bathed in golden light from when he first woke up floated into his mind. Could it have been them? Who were they? Why did they help him?
Su Ci watched him silently, offering no reply.
He could take Number Four away, but then what? He could already imagine the mountain of trouble it would cause.
With that cold thought in mind, Su Ci’s form began to grow even more insubstantial, his figure fading away.
Yet, just before he disappeared completely, his fingertips moved gently. A faint golden light floated toward the boy huddled in the corner, merging softly into his brow.
The Blessing of the Earth Spirit—a short-term protection to shield its recipient from harm or disaster.
As the golden light dispersed into the boy’s brow, the young man in the floating bus opened his eyes once more.
Sitting beside him, A-Yan—who had been quietly watching him with worry ever since his spirit had left—finally relaxed, his anxious expression fading.
Noticing A-Yan’s reaction, Su Ci smiled faintly. He reached out and patted the boy’s head gently.
Outside the bus window, the sky was filled with a soft red mist. Compared to when they had first set out, the light had dimmed considerably. The wind stirred the lingering clouds lightly, painting a scene of quiet calm.
The floating bus continued to drive forward, leaving the research institute far behind as it carried them back to the nursery.
Su Ci stepped off the bus with A-Yan.
When he glanced back, the small monkey that had been hiding on the roof of the bus was nowhere to be seen. However, Su Ci had left his mark on it—finding the little creature again wouldn’t be difficult.
He paid it no further attention.
After returning to the nursery, Su Ci summoned a caretaker robot and handed it the 13 Star-chain Fruits he’d obtained from the cultivation garden, instructing it to distribute them to the children.
The robot, number 4586, unfolded a small collapsible basket and placed the fruits inside. “These are wonderful fruits! The little ones will definitely be thrilled to receive them.”
But after performing a quick calculation, 4586’s electronic voice rang out in confusion, “Su Su, isn’t there one missing?”
There were seven cubs left—excluding Number One—so there should have been a total of 14 fruits. Of course, if Number Four wasn’t included, then there would be an extra fruit.
However, Su Ci shook his head and said firmly, “Two each for the others, one for Number Six. That makes it perfect.”
Such an interesting story. I can’t wait to see where it goes. Thank you for sharing.
Can’t anyone help Number 4 at all? He deserves to live a carefree and happy life like other kids. And what about Number 5? She cries for her brother all day.
