Chapter 219
Perennial plants typically have long lifespans, and this becomes even more pronounced when they transform into sentient beings.
Among the surviving great demons in the interstellar era, the majority are plants. There are exceptions, like the mythical black tortoise, but such long-lived animals are far rarer.
Although plants generally prefer to stay rooted in one place, they occasionally relocate when they grow restless. Over the millennia, these plant demons followed humanity’s footsteps into the vastness of space, spreading across the galaxy.
In the early days of interstellar exploration, the Wood Clan played an irreplaceable role, making extraordinary contributions to humanity’s survival.
Carbon-based life requires a safe and suitable environment to thrive, as well as food and water. For both humans and demons, the primary source of food was crops.
Even carnivorous beings relied on livestock, which in turn depended on plants. Animals and plants have always been intricately connected.
Although humans were experienced in farming, the interstellar environment was vastly different from Earth. The seeds they brought from their home planet needed to be adapted and modified for new planets—a lengthy process.
For humans and demons struggling to survive after leaving Earth, they couldn’t afford to wait that long.
The involvement of plant demons became crucial, significantly shortening the adaptation period and greatly contributing to the development of interstellar humanity.
Once humanity established a foothold in the galaxy, individuals with plant-based bloodlines became leading agricultural experts, earning widespread acclaim and prestige. To this day, they remain highly active on agricultural planets across the galaxy.
However, due to the severe ancestral regression problem, very few members of the Wood Clan who awaken their plant bloodline retain a humanoid form. This doesn’t mean the clan is sparse, though.
Many descendants who haven’t awakened their bloodline powers still carry the potential. These individuals generally have exceptional natural talent in agriculture. Combined with the Wood Clan’s uninterrupted lineage and unparalleled knowledge base, their agricultural achievements are unmatched.
In the locations where the great plant demons finally settled, descendants of the Wood Clan usually remain to watch over them.
That day, nearly all Wood Clan descendants noticed their ancestors acting strangely.
For instance, the caretaker of the Durian King tree witnessed the massive tree uprooting itself. If its roots weren’t so deep, it might have shot straight into the sky.
Other plant elders, usually calm and serene, suddenly displayed uncharacteristic restlessness and urgency.
What on earth was happening?
The caretakers hurried to ask, but the elders remained silent. When they shared their observations in their family chat groups, they discovered that every plant elder was behaving abnormally.
Intuition told them something big was about to happen!
Meanwhile, the plant elders ignored their descendants’ concerns and instead erupted into chaos in their shared telepathic “chat room.”
Mother planet!
Earth Spirit!
These two words stirred the hearts of the plant demons. Ever since they left Earth, not a day had gone by without them longing to return.
Among the surviving great demons, the oldest was Mu Qing. When he left Earth and entered the interstellar age, he had only just achieved humanoid form. Most other plant demons hadn’t even reached that stage.
When they left their homeland, most were newly sentient plants or tree spirits. The interstellar environment made cultivation extremely difficult, and it was only with the help of their elders that many eventually became demons.
Although their memories of their homeland had faded over time, as they aged and neared the end of their lives, those memories grew clearer and more vivid.
In recent years, the collective wish of the plant demons had been the same: to return to Earth with the remains of their elders, so they could rest and reunite with their homeland.
While they had always respected Mu Qing’s seniority, this news…
Mu Qing had secretly returned to the mother planet, met the Earth Spirit, received his blessing, and was now going to work by his side!
Upon hearing this, the plant demons couldn’t contain their excitement.
Even ordinary plants feel a deep love for the Earth; how could sentient plant demons not? To them, the Earth Spirit was the ultimate divine being!
“Mu Qing! What’s going on? When did you find the mother planet? Did you really meet the Earth Spirit?”
“Mu Qing, report your coordinates immediately! I want to return too! I must see the Earth Spirit!”
“Did the Earth Spirit actually speak to you? What did he say? Tell me everything!”
“Mu Qing? Why aren’t you responding? Say something!”
The plant demons bombarded Mu Qing with telepathic messages, but every message they sent vanished into silence. Mu Qing gave no reply.
Mu Bao’s situation was clear to Su Ci at a glance—it was essentially the same issue as the other children, a problem arising during the awakening of his bloodline powers.
Mu Bao blinked, glancing toward Lang Ze and Lu Jiao. His gaze dimmed briefly.
“My legs don’t work anymore,” he said, his tone carrying a hint of sadness. But then he forced a cheerful smile and added, “It’s okay. I can stay here and keep you company.”
The little tree spirit was delicate-looking, with an ethereal quality. His personality and aura exuded the gentle and serene nature typical of the Wood Clan, making it impossible not to feel softhearted toward him.
Su Ci studied him for a moment before beckoning him closer.
Mu Bao obediently controlled his hover wheelchair to move toward Su Ci. The nearer he got, the faster his heart raced—so much so that he felt more nervous than when he had first met his great-grandfather.
Then, he saw Su Ci reach for his hand. The young man’s slender, pale hand glowed faintly with a soft golden light.
Mu Bao was mesmerized by the glow. He didn’t know what it signified, but it felt warm and familiar, filling him with a strange, inexplicable joy.
When Su Ci withdrew his hand and the light faded, Mu Bao couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment.
Then, he heard the young man speak in a gentle voice: “Try standing up.”
Mu Bao froze.
He looked up at Su Ci and, seeing the seriousness on his face, hesitantly lowered his gaze. What he saw stunned him—
His knees could bend!
After nearly a year in a wheelchair, Mu Bao tentatively reached out to touch his thighs.
“They’re… they’re soft?”
He murmured, his voice trembling. For the first time since his transformation into a plant-like form, tears welled in his eyes.
He looked up at Su Ci and repeated, his voice filled with wonder, “They’re soft!”
“They are. Your legs have recovered,” said A-Yan, who stood beside them, smiling as he extended a hand to Mu Bao. “Want to try standing up?”
Mu Bao hesitated but slowly placed his small hand in A-Yan’s. He carefully tried to stand on his legs.
Though his legs wobbled from weakness, having not been used for so long, he managed to stand!
“I’m standing!” he exclaimed excitedly, his round, flushed cheeks glowing with life, all traces of gloom gone.
A Yan nodded and gently guided him to take a few steps.
When Mu Bao realized he could walk, his joy overflowed. “Thank you, Brother A-Yan!”
A-Yan shook his head and said, “The one you should truly thank isn’t me.”
Mu Bao turned to look at Su Ci, who had returned to lounging lazily in his deck chair. In his clear, childish voice, Mu Bao said earnestly, “Thank you!”
As he spoke, the fine green vines on his head, adorned with tiny leaves, began to blossom with small, snow-white flowers.
