Chapter 83: The Eight Vajra Guardians
After getting out of the vehicle, Zhan Yun and the others headed to the registration office. Xu Fengying, wanting to build a good relationship with them, followed along as well.
The registration office was actually a remodeled two-story building. The first floor was for turning in and inventorying supplies, while the second floor handled administrative registration.
A few people were lounging inside the building, chatting lazily. When they saw the group come in, they casually glanced over and said, “Come on, come over here to hand in your supplies.”
However, Zhan Yun and the others didn’t even lift their heads. They walked straight to the stairwell, clearly intending to go upstairs.
“Hey, hey, hey! What are you doing?! Are you deaf?! I told you to come over and hand in your supplies!” Seeing that Zhan Yun’s group had completely ignored them, those people immediately flew into a rage.
Seeing this, Xu Fengying hurriedly stepped in front of Zhan Yun and the others and whispered in persuasion, “Those few are relatives of the base commander. You’d better not offend them. The base has its rules—supplies that are supposed to be handed in still have to be handed in.”
Yet Zhan Yun and the others remained where they were, showing no intention of backing down. Xu Fengying had no choice but to continue, “If you’re short on supplies, I can hand them in for you. Your life-saving kindness earlier is definitely worth more than ten jin of grain. I’ll go get the grain right away—please don’t argue with them.”
With that, Xu Fengying turned to leave. On one hand, she valued their strength and wanted to be on good terms with them; on the other hand, she was genuinely grateful for their help—otherwise, she would probably have already died in a zombie’s jaws.
“Wait.” Zhan Yun suddenly called out to stop her.
Xu Fengying turned back in surprise to look at him.
“Didn’t they say that ability users don’t need to hand in supplies?”
“Yes, but ordinary people still do,” Xu Fengying replied, casting a subtle glance toward Su Ruizhe, Wu Jing, and the others who looked relatively weaker.
“Then there’s no problem,” Zhan Yun said. “We’re all ability users.” With that, he continued walking upstairs.
Lincheng Base was where Su Ruizhe’s nightmare had begun. If possible, Zhan Yun would have preferred never to let Su Ruizhe come anywhere near Lincheng again for the rest of his life. But things didn’t go as planned—the damned weather had forced them to come to Lincheng Base.
Although Su Ruizhe said it was fine, in reality, ever since entering the base he had kept his head lowered. The hand Zhan Yun was holding was icy cold. Zhan Yun knew that he still minded it. Right now, Zhan Yun just wanted to finish registering as quickly as possible, find a place to sleep, and by the time they woke up the rain would probably have stopped. Then they would set off immediately, without wasting another minute.
“Fuck! All ability users? I spit on that! You don’t even bother drafting your lies properly! I say you’re just trying to skip out on paying!” Among the people collecting supplies, a short, scrawny man with a sharp, monkey-like face cursed angrily. He raised the whistle hanging around his neck and blew it hard.
The piercing whistle carried far. In less than half a minute, a squad of people came rushing over from the building opposite.
“Lai San, what’s going on?!” The group drawn by the whistle was armed with guns. Each of them was tall and burly, clearly not to be trifled with.
“Fifth Master, it’s them! These people came into the base and tried to go upstairs without handing in supplies!” The sharp-faced Lai San pointed at Zhan Yun and his group standing on the stairs.
The man known as Fifth Master immediately frowned and looked toward Zhan Yun and the others.
Zhan Yun met his gaze coldly. He was in a very bad mood—why did these people have so much pointless trouble?
“What are you here for?! Trying to get in without handing over grain? If you’re looking for death, at least check where you are! If you want to play deadbeat, ask my gun whether it agrees first!” Fifth Master, irritated by Zhan Yun’s unyielding stare, questioned him coldly.
“It’s a misunderstanding! Just a misunderstanding!” Xu Fengying hurriedly stepped in front of them, afraid that a single wrong word would spark a fight. No matter how capable these people were, they were still flesh and blood—how could they possibly stand up to real guns? Although Zhan Yun had said they were all ability users, how could that be true? Even Xu Fengying herself didn’t believe it.
“Well, if it isn’t the proud and aloof ‘Fire Phoenix.’ Did you pick these people up outside? You’ve got good taste—so many beauties and handsome guys. Planning to offer them up to us brothers?” A man beside Fifth Master said in a mocking, insinuating tone.
“Hahaha, then wouldn’t we be in for quite a treat?” someone immediately echoed with loud laughter.
Xu Fengying took a deep breath, suppressing the anger surging in her chest, and said in a low voice, “They’re new here and don’t know the rules. I’ll hand in their grain on their behalf. I’ll go get it right now—please wait a moment, Fifth Master, Seventh Master.”
This Fifth Master and Seventh Master were two of the dozen or so brothers who had escaped from prison together with the base commander back then. Among them, eight had awakened abilities and were thus known as the Eight Vajra Guardians. Fifth Master and Seventh Master ranked fifth and seventh among those eight.
The Eight Vajra Guardians were not only ability users but also held weapons. Within the base, they were absolute authorities—you could not afford to offend them.
After saying this, Xu Fengying turned to leave.
“Stop!” The Seventh Master, the one who had spoken mockingly, fixed her with a pair of sinister eyes full of lust. “I’ve changed my mind. You don’t need to hand in supplies anymore. Just let us brothers have some fun, and we’ll—ow!”
He hadn’t finished speaking when he suddenly let out a scream, clutching his cheek as blood slowly seeped between his fingers.
He looked around in shock and fury, bluffing as he shouted, “Who was it?! Who dares lay a hand on me?!”
“It was your grandaunt, me.” Cheng Jiao sneered. Raising her hand, she sent another wind blade flying, adding a matching wound to the other side of Seventh Master’s face. “Heh, now it’s symmetrical. No need to thank me.”
“A w-wind-type ability user…” Lai San stared wide-eyed and stammered.
Xu Fengying was also dumbfounded. She hadn’t expected this woman to be an ability user as well—didn’t that mean there were three ability users in this team?
“Fuck! You dare sneak-attack me?! Then don’t blame me for being rude!” Seventh Master felt he had completely lost face. He raised his hand, and a ball of flames appeared in his palm. He hurled it straight at Cheng Jiao’s face.
“Heh.” Cheng Jiao let out a cold laugh. She lifted a slender finger and casually traced a circle in the air. A small vortex instantly formed, dispersing the fireball on the spot.
The people around them all sucked in a sharp breath. They hadn’t expected this pretty girl to be so formidable!
Seventh Master’s heart skipped. This woman’s strength clearly seemed above his own. If they really fought, he wouldn’t come out on top. He hurriedly looked in Fifth Master’s direction.
Fifth Master also frowned slightly. He had thought they were just a bunch of weaklings, but it turned out they had run into a tough opponent. Ability users were valuable combat power to the base, and this beautiful woman was an offensive wind-type ability user with considerable strength. It would be better not to push things too far with her.
He turned his frown on Lai San. “Lai San! What’s going on here? Didn’t you explain the rules to them?!”
“I—I—I… I did! But they said they were all ability users!” Lai San said with a pitiful expression.
Fifth Master frowned at that. He also believed these people were lying to dodge payment.
He looked at Cheng Jiao and said, “The base has its rules, and they’re not to be broken at will. Miss, you can go upstairs to register, but the others must hand in the supplies they’re supposed to.”
“These two are ability users as well!” Xu Fengying said, pointing at Zhang Shuoliang and Zhan Yun.
Seventh Master and Fifth Master didn’t doubt Xu Fengying’s words. Zhang Shuoliang and Zhan Yun looked like people not to be trifled with and were very likely ability users. For such a small team to have three ability users meant their strength was indeed not weak. No wonder they dared to try to skip out on payment—they were probably used to throwing their weight around outside. But this was Lincheng, not a place where they could run wild!
At this moment, Zhang Shuoliang was holding the unwell Wu Jing in his arms, while Zhan Yun was holding Su Ruizhe’s hand as he kept his head slightly lowered.
“Then these two can also go up to register directly. The rest of you still have to hand in supplies.”
Fifth Master and Seventh Master looked at the people who were physically close to the two ability users. The woman was clearly a delicate beauty, and the boy looked obedient and refined, with delicate features—obviously lovers they were keeping, and certainly not ability users. As for the remaining three scrawny men and the little brat holding a kitten, none of them looked like ability users either.
They became even more convinced that Zhan Yun’s earlier words had been lies.
“Why should we? We’re ability users too!” Zheng Jiahe couldn’t help speaking up.
Zheng Jiahe was telling the truth, but in the ears of Fifth Master and Seventh Master, it sounded very different. They assumed he was relying on the backing of ability users and insisting on dodging payment.
“Hmph! The base has its rules. Don’t refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit!” Seventh Master said as he raised the gun in his hand.
Fifth Master also raised his gun with a dark expression. He felt he had already been generous enough, but rules were rules. There was no reason the others’ required grain should be waived just because they had three ability users! The people following Fifth Master and Seventh Master also raised their guns one after another, clearly ready to open fire if they didn’t obediently hand over the grain.
“Are you guys brain-dead?! Can’t you understand plain human speech?!” Cheng Jiao felt these people were seriously messed up. She had already said they were all ability users—why were they still threatening to kill them?!
As Cheng Jiao spoke, she habitually lifted her hand and pointed in their direction.
But the scene of her raising her hand and unleashing a wind blade earlier had clearly left some psychological shadow on Seventh Master. The moment she lifted her hand, his finger twitched reflexively, and he accidentally pulled the trigger.
Bang!
With a gunshot, Yu Dongdong, who had been standing obediently at the very edge, was hit by the bullet.
It happened so suddenly that no one had expected Seventh Master to fire—Seventh Master himself was stunned as well.
“Dongdong!!!!” Everyone in Zhan Yun’s team instantly changed expression. Song Chengshu rushed forward in a panic to press down on the wound on Dongdong’s shoulder, while everyone else glared at Seventh Master with bloodshot eyes.
This was bad—how could they be so unlucky as to hit a child?!
“I—I…” Seventh Master’s legs trembled as he tried to explain, but suddenly he felt an overwhelming force crash down from above, pinning him hard to the ground.
The pressure on Seventh Master’s body kept increasing. Even breathing became difficult, and he could clearly hear his bones creaking under the strain.
