Chapter 33: Someone Is Forcing the Door
Everyone got into one of the test-drive vehicles. The tank was freshly filled, and as expected of a top-of-the-line luxury off-road SUV, everything was electrically controlled—the doors, a panoramic sunroof, a powerful engine, four-wheel drive, and an air suspension system. The interior was large and spacious; even with all seven of them squeezed inside, it didn’t feel cramped at all.
Zhan Yun drove. The biggest of them, Zhang Shuoliang, sat in the front passenger seat holding Yu Dongdong along with the kitten, Xiao Hei. The rest were all fairly slim, so fitting into the back seat was manageable. Zheng Jiahe, however, thought the trunk space looked pretty good. After fiddling with it a bit, the trunk could even fit someone lying down. He got two mats from Su Ruizhe and spread them in the trunk, sat leaning against the side wall of the car with his legs stretched out, and found it surprisingly comfortable.
After closing the trunk door, they drove straight back toward the villa district. What surprised them was that, on the way back, they actually spotted several zombie corpses.
You had to know that this villa district had only been put up for sale a few days before the apocalypse. Not to mention how many contracts could even be signed in such a short time—even if buyers were highly efficient, there was no way they could have moved in as quickly as Zhan Yun. So under normal circumstances, aside from Zhan Yun’s group, there shouldn’t have been anyone else living here.
Although zombies had relatively keen senses of smell and hearing, they were only somewhat sharper than ordinary humans—not to the extent that they could detect the scent of a few people across an entire villa district. As a result, zombies rarely appeared here.
So what was with these zombie corpses?
When Zhan Yun drove up to the entrance of the villa district, he discovered that the iron gate had been opened. Clearly, someone else had entered.
Still, Zhan Yun wasn’t too surprised. After all, the safety level of this villa district was quite high. The fully renovated European-style villas were spacious and comfortable, equipped with basic facilities and furniture. With few zombies around, they were far safer than the run-down residential buildings nearby.
Since all the houses were technically ownerless now, people could mess around however they liked—as long as they didn’t draw zombies over and bring trouble to him.
But when Zhan Yun drove up to his own place and saw seven or eight people prying at his front door lock and windows, his anger instantly shot through the roof.
He floored the accelerator and charged straight toward the gate, then slammed on the brakes, stopping the car right in front of his house. He flung open the door and got out.
“What the f*ck are you trying to do?!” The group was startled by the car that suddenly rushed toward them. Just as they were about to flee in panic, it stopped, and their fear turned into anger. The leader—a tall, muscular man—roared furiously.
Zhan Yun almost laughed from sheer rage. These people who were breaking into his house actually looked more imposing than he did.
“I haven’t even asked what the f*ck you are doing! This is my house!”
“Ha, your house?” The man sneered. “Go ahead, call it and see if it answers you.”
The reason the man dared to talk back so boldly was mainly because it was too dark. The car headlights were glaring straight at him, making his vision blurry. He didn’t see that Zhan Yun was nearly 1.9 meters tall, nor the fury around him that was almost tangible. Seeing only that there seemed to be just one person, and relying on their numerical advantage, he spoke with such brazen confidence.
Before Zhan Yun could say anything, there was a click as the door on the other side of the car opened. The man couldn’t see very clearly, but from the silhouette he could make out a large, powerfully built man. If that man hadn’t been holding a child who was only a little taller than his knee—and if that child hadn’t been hugging a cat—he might have felt at least a bit cautious.
“Kid, this house of yours is nice. My brothers and I have taken a liking to it. If you know what’s good for you, hand over the keys and scram somewhere else. There are plenty of houses in this villa district anyway—they’re all the same.”
“If they’re all the same, then why don’t you go somewhere else? Why insist on taking our house?” someone shot back.
“Hahaha.” The muscular man seemed to find the question amusing and burst out laughing. The people behind him laughed along as well. “Why the f*ck would there be a reason? I just like your house! Hand over the keys right now, then get the hell out of here!”
In truth, the reason these people had their eyes on Zhan Yun’s house was very simple: the reinforced security doors and windows, the comfortable furniture visible through the glass, and the boxes of biscuits sitting in the living room.
Even though it was obvious someone had been living there, there wasn’t a single person inside at the moment. With the world in chaos, who knew whether the owner of this house was dead or alive? Such a good place—what a waste not to live in it. And who knew, maybe there was even more food inside. It would be a shame to let it go to waste!
Zhan Yun’s face darkened like still water, his thin lips pressed tightly together. He was thinking carefully—should he beat this guy to death… or beat him to death?
Just then, the car doors opened again. Su Ruizhe, Song Chengshu, Wu Jing, and Zheng Jiahe all got out. Wu Jing’s arm was wrapped in bandages, and Su Ruizhe, Song Chengshu, and Zheng Jiahe didn’t look like fighters at all.
The muscular man relaxed and burst into laughter again. “Hahaha, you’ve got quite a few people, don’t you? But they’re useless. Since I’m in a good mood right now, hurry up and get the hell out of here.”
Before Zhan Yun could make a move, Su Ruizhe had already rushed to the front like a startled little beast, burning with anger. He glared with wide, round eyes and demanded furiously, “Say that again?!”
Su Ruizhe wasn’t as tall as Zhan Yun and the others, and since he had rushed to the front, the group could clearly see his face under the lights.
Su Ruizhe already had good features to begin with—fair skin and a pair of big, expressive eyes that seemed to speak for themselves. In these apocalyptic days when everyone was eating poorly and sleeping badly, he stood out all the more.
“Well damn, Brother Wang, this little cutie’s face is really smooth and tender,” a short man said with a lecherous grin as he sidled up to the muscular man and whispered.
“Heh, no kidding—there’s also a pretty good-looking woman back there,” another young man chimed in.
“Heh heh, little cutie, how about coming with us brothers?” The muscular man chuckled, talking trash as he took advantage with his words. As he spoke, he directly reached out toward Su Ruizhe’s face, clearly trying to grope him.
How the hell was that something you could tolerate?!
Zhan Yun’s hand instantly went to his lower back, but before he could draw his gun, there was a crisp, loud smack—the muscular man’s face was snapped to the side by Su Ruizhe’s slap.
“Fck! You ungrateful little sht!” Having been slapped in the face, the muscular man flew into a rage and raised his hand, about to teach Su Ruizhe a lesson.
And then—
Su Ruizhe moved with lightning speed. He raised his arm to block the man’s downward strike, then cleanly delivered another slap to the other side of his face. Immediately after, he lashed out with a swift, precise kick, viciously connecting with an unspeakable part of the man’s body.
“F*CK!! Get them!” the muscular man howled, clutching his grievously injured nether region.
The seven or eight men cursed as they rushed forward, but in the very next moment, the two at the front were sent flying by Zhan Yun—one kick each.
“Ow! Ow!” Both men collapsed to the ground, unable to get back up.
Seeing that Zhan Yun was a tough opponent, the short, lecherous man’s eyes darted around. He and another young man charged toward Zhang Shuoliang instead.
You pick on the weak—this big guy looked intimidating, but he was carrying a child. If a fight broke out, he’d surely have to hold back.
Zhang Shuoliang shifted Yu Dongdong behind him, caught the short man’s swinging club with one hand, and kicked him flying. Then he turned and threw a punch at the young man who was trying to flank him from behind, knocking two teeth straight out of his mouth on the spot.
Someone else tried to sneak up on Zheng Jiahe and the others from behind, but Zheng Jiahe grabbed him by the neck like a chick, hoisted him up, and slammed him hard into the ground. The impact left him seeing stars, his head smeared with blood.
Before long, the entire group had been taken down, sprawled on the ground groaning in pain.
Zhan Yun strode forward with long steps, slowly walked up, and planted his foot on the back of the lecherous short man. Pointing at Su Ruizhe not far away, he sneered coldly. “What did you just say about him? I didn’t hear it clearly. Say it again.”
“I—I—I…” The man felt as though the foot pressing on his back weighed thousands of pounds. He was on the verge of rolling his eyes, so scared he was practically about to wet himself.
As for the young man who had earlier said Wu Jing was pretty—not only had Zhang Shuoliang knocked out his teeth, he’d grabbed him again and kept beating him. The guy cried and begged incoherently through tears and blood.
But Zhang Shuoliang acted as if he hadn’t heard a thing, continuing to beat him mercilessly. Only after the man passed out did he toss him onto the ground like a piece of trash.
Brother Liang from the streets—ruthless, and a man of few words.
The muscular man was so terrified by the sudden turn of events that he was practically about to piss himself. If he’d known these people were this skilled, he wouldn’t have dared to try and steal from them even if it killed him.
