Chapter 2
Lin An’an was very familiar with mental power riots.
In the world he originally came from, mental power riots were not uncommon. As a healer, Lin An’an had come into contact with many patients suffering from such episodes.
In his understanding, a mental power riot always had a cause—for example, forcibly piloting a mech that did not match one’s mental power, engaging in an overloaded battle, or continuing to use mental power after it had already been completely exhausted… and so on.
But the giant wolf before him was different. Its mental power riot had come extremely abruptly. The battle just now had barely cost the wolf any effort at all, so it could not possibly be considered an overexerting fight.
Lin An’an found it very strange, but the current situation did not allow him to think too deeply about it. For the moment, he could only attribute this odd phenomenon to the differences between worlds.
He hesitated for less than a second before he could no longer restrain himself and began climbing down the tree.
The pain brought about by a mental power riot was clearly no ordinary suffering. The silver wolf’s huge body was curled tightly, and Lin An’an could see the suppressed tremors running through it.
Lin An’an was somewhat surprised by the wolf’s posture.
Having seen many victims of mental power riots, he knew very well that curling the body up during such an episode could contain most of the effects of the riot within oneself, thereby reducing the harm done to others nearby.
But doing so would make the sufferer themselves endure tremendous pain.
Lin An’an covered his body with a layer of mental power as a protective barrier, and soon, moving against the turbulent currents produced by the riot, he reached the giant wolf’s side.
The wolf’s eyes were tightly shut, and low, suppressed growls of pain rumbled from its throat.
Only when he got closer did Lin An’an notice that there was a scar on the wolf’s face. It slanted across from the space between its brows; if it had been just slightly farther to the side, it would have damaged the eye.
Lin An’an cautiously moved a little closer and stretched out his soft little tentacle, gently placing it against the wolf’s brow.
Perhaps the cub’s touch was simply too light and too small, for the wolf did not notice that someone had come close.
A faint and somewhat weak thread of mental power flowed out from the slender tentacle and was quietly transmitted into the giant wolf’s body.
After a moment, the little monster cub withdrew his tentacle and sighed inwardly.
His mental power had only recovered a tiny bit. He could only slightly soothe the wolf’s rampaging mental power, but he could not completely bring it under control.
Still, that thin stream of mental power was already enough to allow the silver wolf to safely get through this crisis.
Before leaving, Lin An’an patted the wolf’s fluffy paw with his little tentacle.
“Ying-ji!”
Consider it payment for that small supply pack!
Taking advantage of the dim night, the little cub dragged the small supply bag away.
After an unknown amount of time, the curled silver wolf finally stopped its low growls. With difficulty, it lifted its eyelids, revealing those dark golden beast eyes filled with bloodshot veins.
Imperial Alpha Research Center
This research center had been established in the year of the Big Bang of the universe. After unknown strange illnesses began appearing across the galaxy that year, the Empire urgently founded such a research institute.
These incurable strange diseases were collectively called Alpha Syndrome, and the institute’s name originated from this.
At this moment, inside one of the laboratories, a floating light screen suspended in midair suddenly issued a notification.
“Beep beep—Target individual’s traces detected. Please select camera tracking mode… Ten-meter tracking mode selected!”
The image within the screen quickly zoomed in, and the figure of the silver giant wolf appeared on the display.
Beside the large screen hovered a smaller one showing a profile:
[Code Name: SSS
Name: Feng Wu
Identity: Marshal
Alpha Symptom: Mental Power Riot…]
“SSS’s condition looks pretty good today,” one researcher remarked.
“Don’t be careless,” another said. “It’s already been a week since SSS’s last mental power riot. Judging by the timing, it should be happening within these two days.”
Several researchers temporarily set aside their other work and observed the wolf’s condition on the screen.
The silver wolf, which had been lying beneath the tree eating, seemed to sense their gaze. It swept a glance toward the camera’s direction. Those dark golden beast eyes were cold and intimidating—so much so that even through the screen, the researchers instinctively stiffened and held their breath.
Only after the wolf withdrew its gaze did everyone finally relax and continue recording the wolf’s physical data.
At that moment, the system suddenly issued another notification.
“That’s strange. Why is there another life sign nearby?”
Another researcher manually adjusted the camera and aimed it toward the tree indicated by the system. He froze.
“There’s no one there.”
“A false alarm?” he murmured, then suddenly frowned. “No, wait! Something’s moving there!”
The camera zoomed in rapidly, and they finally found the target lifeform—
It was a tiny monster cub, no bigger than an adult’s palm. Its body was entirely black and soft-looking. At the moment it was hiding among the dense leaves, apparently frightened by the silver wolf not far below.
The researchers were all stunned.
“A cub this small… how did it end up in the wilderness of Sin Star?”
Someone immediately pulled up the list of patients sent to Sin Star in recent years.
“Its second form is still in the juvenile stage. This child can’t be more than three years old. But among the cubs sent to Sin Star by the Empire in the past three years, there’s no record of this child.”
Everyone fell silent, sighing inwardly at the same time.
If it was not an imperial cub, then it must belong to the Federation or the star pirates.
But regardless of which side the cub came from, seeing someone so young sent to Sin Star was heartbreaking to anyone who witnessed it.
One researcher removed his glasses and rubbed his bloodshot eyes, his voice hoarse.
“Alpha Syndrome… damn it all.”
While they were observing the nameless little monster cub, the silver wolf beneath the tree had already finished fighting the suddenly appearing monster.
The battle itself did not draw much attention from the two researchers. They knew very well how powerful the silver wolf was and naturally understood that the monster posed no threat to it.
However, not long after the monster was defeated, the system suddenly sounded an alarm.
“Warning! Warning! Target mental power levels abnormal! Target mental power levels abnormal!!!”
All the researchers immediately snapped out of their previous state. Just as they were preparing to record the wolf’s current condition for research—
With a sharp crack, the screen went completely black.
The rampaging mental power from the silver wolf had directly shattered the nearby camera, and they could no longer track its condition.
Silence filled the laboratory for a moment.
“SSS’s mental power riot this time is even more severe.”
“Immediately deploy nearby cameras to investigate the situation!” someone said. “Let’s hope SSS can get through this one as well.”
Someone suddenly remembered.
“That cub just now—”
He only said half the sentence, but everyone present understood.
That little cub had been only ten meters away from the silver wolf. At such a close distance, enduring the shockwave of such a violent mental power riot…
The chances of survival were probably very slim.
The newly deployed cameras soon reached the location.
Someone murmured in shock,
“How could this be…”
The destination was completely empty. Even the silver wolf, which should still have been in the middle of a mental power riot, had vanished without a trace.
The food in the small supply pack was quite plentiful; Lin An’an ate from it for a full week before it was almost gone.
During that week, quite a few more supplies were dropped in this area. Lin An’an had not given up on finding a new home, but he still failed to come across a suitable box.
Those boxes were either too small or too big; either too heavy for him to move, or too light and liable to be blown away by the wind.
On one rare occasion, he did find one of the right size, but five of its six sides had huge holes in them. Sleeping inside it was no different from sleeping out in the open.
It was not until this day that the flying craft delivered another large batch of supplies.
Lin An’an had already finished all of his stored food. This time, besides finding a house, he also needed to find a way to scavenge enough to deal with the next few days’ meals.
His luck was still fairly good this time. Not only did he manage to pick up a pack of compressed rations, he also found a brand-new luxurious grand villa.
Seeing the familiar little bunny print on the villa, Lin An’an was so moved he nearly burst into tears.
However, just as he was dragging the bunny villa away and preparing to leave, a lion’s roar suddenly came from behind him.
When he turned around, he saw a male lion with dry, yellowed fur.
Lin An’an: “!!!”
The lion seemed to have lost its mind. Its eyes were blood-red and its expression savage. Roaring as it came, it charged straight toward the palm-sized little monster cub.
Lin An’an’s scalp instantly went numb. Without hesitation, he threw down the bunny villa in his grip, then painfully tossed the pack of compressed rations off to the side as well before turning and running for his life.
As he ran, he cried out desperately, “Ying ying jiji!”
Eat the rations, not me!
I’m just a little cub—I’m not even enough to fill the gap between your teeth, qaq!!
The pack of compressed rations was small, but it would definitely be more filling than one tiny cub like him.
Lin An’an sincerely hoped the lion’s target was the food, but the lion completely ignored the rations and kept pursuing him without pause.
The lion was very fast. In only a few breaths, it had already closed the distance rapidly. Lin An’an could clearly hear the lion’s heavy breathing, and that scalp-numbing roar was almost sounding right behind his head.
Lin An’an let out a sorrowful little yingji. Trying to make light of his misery, he thought that perhaps among all transmigrators in history, he was about to become the one with the shortest survival time.
Weak, pitiful, and helpless.jpg
Perhaps the heavens heard the cub’s grievance, because just as the lion’s forepaw was about to touch Lin An’an, another furious roar suddenly rang out from not far away.
The lion, which had been chasing him relentlessly, was drawn by that roar and turned its blood-red eyes in that direction.
It was a giant monster with eight long tentacles, looking very much like an enormous octopus.
The appearance of the giant octopus diverted the lion’s attention. The lion halted and roared angrily back at it.
Waving its tentacles, the octopus rushed over at high speed and just happened to place itself between Lin An’an and the lion.
Lin An’an froze, then rejoiced inwardly. So this octopus monster was not coming for him after all. He turned around, intending to seize the chance to escape.
Before he left, the giant octopus, which was already tangled up with the lion, glanced in his direction. Seeing that he still had not moved, it even freed one tentacle to give him a push.
It was almost as if it were saying: What are you still standing there for? Run!
Lin An’an gave a little yingji of thanks toward the octopus. After confirming that the giant octopus held a complete upper hand, he immediately turned and fled.
—Sure enough, there are still more good people… ah no, more good monsters around!
After escaping danger, Lin An’an took a detour back to the supply drop site and found the pack of compressed rations he had thrown away.
This was three days’ worth of food for him—he absolutely could not waste it!
Having just escaped from the lion’s jaws, Lin An’an was both tired and hungry. He planned to find a nearby tree to hide in first, eat something, and then furnish his new home.
But it seemed his good luck for the day had already run out. Before he could even climb to the tree, he heard another roar coming from not far away.
This time, it was a huge monster with four pairs of eyes and eight legs. It looked somewhat familiar.
Lin An’an had no time to think. The ration pack he had only just recovered was thrown out again.
This monster really did seem to be after the food. Seeing the ration pack, it lunged forward and opened its bloody maw, catching it with perfect accuracy.
Taking advantage of that moment, the little cub ran at top speed in the direction where the giant octopus had appeared.
This monster was tall and massive. Hiding in a tree was clearly not a wise choice. If the monster chose to keep chasing him, then his only hope of survival would be to find that giant octopus which had shown him kindness before.
For such a gigantic monster, one tiny pack of rations was obviously not even enough to fill the gaps between its teeth.
Hearing the heavy footsteps behind him and the roars drawing closer and closer, Lin An’an’s heart sank. He had already done his utmost to manifest as many tentacles as possible, but he still could not outrun the huge monster behind him.
They both had eight legs, so why was the difference so enormous?!
Lin An’an was on the verge of tears, thinking to himself that surely he was not really going to die here, was he?
The next second, the ground vanished beneath his feet, and with a startled yingji, he pitched forward.
It was a rather steep little slope. Lin An’an’s view had been blocked by weeds taller than himself, so he had not noticed it at all.
The sudden loss of balance startled the palm-sized little cub. The eight soft little tentacles he had only just managed to produce all whooshed back at once, and his entire body turned into a small black bouncy ball, rolling head over heels all the way down the slope.
—This was much faster than escaping on his tiny tentacles!
Lin An’an desperately stretched out two little tentacles, shut his eyes tightly, and covered his equally soft forehead, letting himself roll and roll until, at last, he crashed into a soft, furry pillar.
Dizzy and seeing stars, the little monster cub sat up and looked upward along that silver-white furry pillar—only to meet a pair of dark golden beast eyes.
They looked somewhat familiar.
He looked again.
Lin An’an’s eyes instantly lit up. “Yingji!”
It was the silver giant wolf from before—the one that had suffered a mental power riot!
