Chapter 49
“Based on the data, it looks like this, but I can’t be entirely sure about the old Marshal’s actual condition. I was thinking…”
“I’ll go now. I’ll bring the old Marshal back.”
Jian Mo cut off Meng Zhan’s words. Shi Xiaowang held his hand, feeling it tremble slightly.
“I’ll go with you.”
Jian Mo frowned at him, but Shi Xiaowang stopped him from speaking further.
“We have new protective suits now, and a purification cabin, but since the purification ability is in me, I just want an extra layer of safety.”
“No, I’m not letting you go alone.”
Jian Mo still refused him.
“Not letting go? We’re not going to a battlefield. We’re just picking up the old Marshal and bringing him home. If you can protect yourself, you can protect me. Or are you worried you might not make it back?”
Shi Xiaowang spoke seriously.
“No… I’m just afraid for you…”
“Bring the little duke with you.”
Before Jian Mo could finish, General Xin spoke, patting his shoulder.
“You never knew fear before. Knowing fear is a good thing. Bring the little duke with you, protect yourself, and protect him. Reunite the old Marshal’s family—wouldn’t that be great?”
“I also suggest you take Xiaowang with you.”
Meng Zhan said.
“The protective suit and purification cabin are both inanimate objects. With Xiaowang there, we’ll be much more agile. There’s also communication equipment on the small ships; if any problems arise, Xiaowang can cooperate with me.”
Jian Mo remained silent, frowning as he looked at him.
Shi Xiaowang gently shook the hands they were holding together.
“Alright.”
Jian Mo exhaled deeply.
“But you have to listen to me. No matter what happens, you must obey me.”
“Mm, I know.”
Shi Xiaowang nodded, giving his assurance.
Although they both wanted to depart immediately, they had to stay at the base until all preparations were complete.
Jian Mo’s emotions shifted from shock and joy to a silent, contemplative state.
Shi Xiaowang continued holding his hand, trying to calm him.
He knew why Jian Mo had suddenly gone silent. Jian Mo had always thought he personally killed the old Marshal and abandoned his body until now.
The old Marshal hadn’t died—but Jian Mo had effectively abandoned him for such a long time.
He had never gone back; he had passively let the old Marshal fend for himself. If it hadn’t been for Xu Qingluo’s parents, and if the old Marshal had never been discovered, Jian Mo might have killed him a second time.
“Jian Mo, I know comforting words right now won’t mean much, but we still have a chance to make things right, right?”
Shi Xiaowang said softly.
Jian Mo looked up at him and held him tightly in his arms.
Shi Xiaowang hugged him back firmly, patting his back gently, slowly.
“I know this is a happy thing, but I can’t help feeling… I feel so sorry for him…”
Jian Mo’s voice was heavy with self-reproach.
He couldn’t forgive himself. Why hadn’t he gone back to check? If he had, the old Marshal wouldn’t have suffered outside for so long.
“It’s okay, Jian Mo. You can still say these things to him in person. But I think the old Marshal would smile and tell you it’s all past now, and it’s alright.”
Shi Xiaowang spoke lightly.
Jian Mo rested his forehead on Shi Xiaowang’s shoulder in silence for a while.
“Mm.”
When they departed, they didn’t bring many people. The old Marshal’s survival was known only to the emperor and high command—it hadn’t been made public.
After all, they still didn’t know the old Marshal’s full condition. Revealing it now would only increase public suspicion of Jian Mo.
Including Shi Xiaowang, six people in total piloted three small ships toward the designated coordinates.
This was Shi Xiaowang’s first long-distance jump and his first time leaving the Imperial Star.
“Are you okay? If anything feels off, tell me immediately.”
The ship’s speed far exceeded a normal hovercar. People who hadn’t experienced interstellar jumps could easily get motion sickness.
Once the ride stabilized, Jian Mo frowned at Shi Xiaowang, who looked pale, and reminded him again.
“I’m fine. Just a little dizzy.”
Shi Xiaowang shook his head and looked out the window.
“Are we… in the galaxy now?”
Jian Mo chuckled lightly.
“Sort of. Pretty, isn’t it?”
“Very pretty.”
Shi Xiaowang smiled.
“Much better than the scenes in the holographic gifts.”
Jian Mo paused and glanced at him again.
Shi Xiaowang lifted the corner of his lips and placed a small wooden dog on the empty spot on the control panel.
“So M really isn’t Mo in Jian Mo?”
Jian Mo laughed as he looked at the little dog.
“Really not. It’s Jian Da Meow’s ‘Meow’.”
Surprised, Shi Xiaowang tilted his head and smiled.
“Looks like Da Meow really approves of the name.”
“Mm, it really feels like a family.”
Jian Mo said.
They seemed enveloped by the night, speeding at lightspeed yet somehow feeling suspended.
The surrounding nebulae shifted slowly, like a beautiful dream.
They didn’t talk much during the journey. The old Marshal’s uncertain condition hung over them like a sword of Damocles, dimming their mood for admiring the scenery.
After what felt like an eternity, Shi Xiaowang felt like he had slept several times. Upon opening his eyes, he saw massive voids forming, like whirlpools in a lake, consuming surrounding star fragments.
Facing this for the first time, Shi Xiaowang tensed and instinctively grabbed the handrail.
“Those are wormholes. Don’t be afraid, it’ll be fine.”
Jian Mo said softly.
“What happens if we go in?”
Despite being scared, he was curious.
“We’ll appear in another space, like a tunnel.”
Jian Mo smiled.
“We might experience it soon.”
“Are we going in?”
Shi Xiaowang’s eyes widened.
“Yes.”
Jian Mo freed one hand and stroked his face.
“Don’t be afraid. They only look scary on the outside. They’re just like ordinary roads we travel on. If you’re really scared, close your eyes, and I’ll tell you once we’re out.”
Shi Xiaowang shook his head.
“No, closing my eyes will be scarier. I think my imagination is pretty good.”
Jian Mo laughed.
“Then experience it. Hold on tight.”
They located the marked wormhole. Jian Mo accelerated into it, with the other two ships following closely.
During the violent turbulence, Shi Xiaowang gripped the handrail tightly.
Even the nebulae’s light disappeared, leaving only endless darkness and jolts, as if the universe itself was swallowing them.
Shi Xiaowang looked at Jian Mo. Jian Mo’s expression was serious and focused. For a moment, Shi Xiaowang felt as if he was seeing battlefield Jian Mo—resolute, cold, and ruthless.
Though it felt out of place, he couldn’t help but feel his heart race.
Time seemed to lose all meaning here. Eventually, faint starlight reappeared.
“You okay? Feeling sick?”
As the ship stabilized, Jian Mo immediately looked back at him.
Shi Xiaowang shook his head.
“Don’t keep asking me. Trust your piloting skills more—I’m not that fragile.”
“Mm…”
Jian Mo suddenly laughed.
“Seems like you don’t really like my piloting skills.”
“When did I—”
Halfway through, Shi Xiaowang realized what Jian Mo meant and hit him.
“Have some decency!”
Afterwards, he looked nervously around the control panel.
“Relax, I didn’t activate the comms.”
Jian Mo laughed.
“You… hmph!”
Shi Xiaowang turned his face away in embarrassment.
Only Jian Mo’s soft laughter remained.
“We’re almost there. Xu Qingluo’s parents’ location overlaps with the old Marshal’s. They should be together. Since the old Marshal was contaminated by the mother bug, the contamination could also affect them. Even though Xu Qingluo’s parents don’t have psychic powers, being together for so long means they might also be contaminated. Wait inside for now. I’ll confirm the situation before you come out.”
Jian Mo maneuvered the ship to descend onto a nearby asteroid.
“Mm.”
Shi Xiaowang replied, then quietly added:
“I don’t dislike it—”
“Huh? What?”
His voice was too low for Jian Mo to catch immediately.
“Nothing, just reminding you to be careful.”
Shi Xiaowang said quickly.
The ship landed, and Jian Mo looked at him.
Shi Xiaowang glanced at him, meeting his smiling eyes, then quickly looked away, blushing.
Jian Mo leaned over, checked his terminal equipment, and while Shi Xiaowang relaxed, kissed him softly, whispering:
“As long as you like it, I’ll keep at it.”
“Jian Mo!”
Shi Xiaowang flustered, half-angry, half-embarrassed.
Jian Mo laughed and exited the ship, joining the other four.
Shi Xiaowang stayed inside, watching them walk further away.
Since the distance was great, the base’s sensors could only give an approximate location. They’d have to search again once here.
Jian Mo didn’t let him leave, and Shi Xiaowang obediently stayed put.
He had promised to listen, and he intended to keep that promise. He knew too little—rushing out could only make things worse.
But it was hard not to worry; waiting was always painful and exhausting.
The sky here was very different from that seen on the Imperial Star.
Beautiful nebulae were still visible, but there were many more dark wormholes.
Shi Xiaowang looked at them, momentarily dazed.
Would any of these wormholes, if passed through, lead him back to the old Marshal?
Once he confirmed the old Marshal was alive, Shi Xiaowang thought of him.
At that moment, he envied Jian Mo.
He also missed the old man and wanted to see his family again.
“Xiaowang, I’ve found them.”
After an unknown amount of time, Jian Mo’s voice came over the comm, slightly distorted by static.
“You don’t need to come out. I’m bringing them back now. We’ll be there shortly.”
“Are they alright?”
Shi Xiaowang asked anxiously.
“Not too good.”
Jian Mo said softly.
“It’s fine. As long as we found them. You stay here; I won’t run off.”
“Mm.”
