Chapter 46
Jian Da Meow looked even more confused, almost innocently so. What had he done now?
“Am I wrong? He sleeps with me and then disappears—isn’t that what a jerk does? It’s been days, not a single message. If he felt awkward, I even gave him a way to save face that day, but he didn’t take it. What exactly is he thinking?!”
Shi Xiaowang poked the lion’s nose, his face full of dissatisfaction.
Jian Da Meow opened his mouth as if to explain something, but ultimately stayed silent.
“If he had other thoughts, he could have told me, but he didn’t.”
Shi Xiaowang continued complaining.
“Disappears without warning, doesn’t explain a word… silent jerk!”
The lion lifted his head, looking at him. So that’s how Shi Xiaowang saw it.
He thought he was giving Shi Xiaowang space, thinking he wouldn’t want to be disturbed for now. But from Shi Xiaowang’s perspective, it looked like he had left in a huff.
Jian Mo began doubting himself.
It seemed that whenever he dealt with Shi Xiaowang, he always chose the wrong option. Was his thinking really that childish…?
“What are you doing, Jian Da Meow?”
Shi Xiaowang lifted his chin again, a little amused.
“I asked about your owner, but you’re already bowing your head in apology.”
The lion was about to explain when Shi Xiaowang’s light-brain suddenly received a call from Meng Zhan.
“Teacher Meng? What’s the matter?”
“I just received a message from the base. They’ve detected the terminal signals of Xu Qingluo’s parents. The surrounding space is unstable with many wormholes, so we need further analysis to pinpoint the exact location,” Meng Zhan explained.
“Can I take a look? I’m still not very familiar with these things.”
Shi Xiaowang was curious when he heard “wormholes.”
“Sure.”
Meng Zhan thought for a moment.
“Have Uncle Ye take you to the study. The computer there is connected to the base system—I’ll grant you access directly.”
“Okay! I’ll go find Uncle Ye!”
Shi Xiaowang glanced at the dazed Jian Da Meow and headed to the main residence first.
Meng Zhan continued on the line.
“Even if we locate the exact position now, it’s risky to attempt a rescue. The base calculations show that the wormholes may lead straight to the battlefield. Even though the Zerg have been defeated, high-concentration contamination remains. Despite having the purification pods now, anyone going in could still suffer secondary contamination. So I plan to make a new set of protective suits. You remember, right? The purified abilities we extracted before—they can’t actively purify, but they can serve as isolation.”
“Mm, I remember. That should be easier to make than a purification pod.”
Uncle Ye turned on the study equipment, and Shi Xiaowang watched the map Meng Zhan synced over.
“These gray-black areas are the wormholes?”
“Yes. The space inside is unstable, causing positional distortions. Those two red dots are the terminal locations of Xu Qingluo’s parents,” Meng Zhan explained, glancing at Shi Xiaowang.
“Where’s your… Jian Da Meow?”
Shi Xiaowang looked up at him.
“Da Meow’s in the flower room. Why?”
“Ah… nothing.”
Meng Zhan touched his nose, smiling.
“By the way, Major Xin has recovered consciousness after the purification treatment. He said he wants to see you. Do you want to go?”
“Major Xin is awake? His purification is complete?”
Shi Xiaowang’s eyes lit up.
“Great! I’m coming now!”
He hung up and headed out.
Passing the long table, his gaze paused and he stopped.
“What’s wrong?” Uncle Ye asked behind him.
Shi Xiaowang stared at a spot for a moment, his smile a mix of surprise and helplessness.
“Nothing, let’s go.”
After informing Uncle Ye that he was heading to the research institute, Shi Xiaowang soon arrived.
He had only met Major Xin briefly, but he never forgot how Xin had gone berserk.
His research on the purification pod wasn’t just for Jian Mo—it was also because of that day’s incident, making him feel it was his duty.
Otherwise, why would fate have brought him here?
Now that Major Xin had recovered, his purification ability had finally proven its worth.
Outside the institute, Meng Zhan stood at the gate to meet him.
After greeting him, Shi Xiaowang naturally asked, “Where’s Jian Mo?”
“Ah?”
Meng Zhan looked confused.
I thought you said he was in the flower room?
Shi Xiaowang also looked a little puzzled.
“He said a few days ago he’d come to the research institute. Isn’t he here?”
“Ah… haha.”
Meng Zhan immediately smiled.
“He’s not here; he went to the base. Are you looking for him?”
“No need.”
Shi Xiaowang pouted.
“Just asking. It’s fine he’s not here.”
“Ah… hahaha…”
Meng Zhan laughed awkwardly and then messaged Jian Mo.
[Big Brother? What’s going on with you two? When did you come to the research institute? Next time, give me a heads-up, okay? I need to get into the scene too!]
Major Xin’s arms had fully recovered, but he still looked weak. Seeing Shi Xiaowang, he immediately stood and gave a proper military salute.
“Little Duke.”
“No, no!”
Shi Xiaowang waved him off.
“Please sit. Just call me Xiaowang. ‘Little Duke’ is just a title.”
Major Xin smiled, shaking his head.
“How can it be just a title? You brought me purification ability, gave me a second life. Isn’t respect for you natural?”
Major Xin’s age was roughly enough to be his father’s. Even sick, the soldier’s natural uprightness made him seem steady and reliable.
Shi Xiaowang smiled along.
“This isn’t my achievement. It’s fate using me to help the Federation through its crisis. I just happen to be the chosen one.”
Major Xin smiled again, shaking his head but changed the topic.
“I can speak with the Little Duke alone for a bit?” he asked Meng Zhan.
“Of course.”
Meng Zhan had others leave, giving them space.
“I’ll be at the door. Call me if you need anything.”
Once the door closed, Major Xin met Shi Xiaowang’s slightly confused gaze.
“I just woke up recently. I heard you’re looking for two Chamber employees. I saw their coordinate signals before.”
“You… you saw them? Where?”
Shi Xiaowang frowned.
“Before the final battle, the old marshal and Jian Mo split up, planning the last encirclement. I was with the old marshal. When jumping through the edge star system, I received the distress signals from the two terminals. The terrain was complex and too close to the battlefield. The old marshal led a small team to rescue them.”
Major Xin explained slowly.
“Everything went well until the retreat. We were ambushed by the Zerg, specifically the Queen Zerg. The queen is intelligent; she used the two merchants as bait. We weren’t prepared, and the old marshal was injured, heavily contaminated.”
He sighed lightly.
“But he didn’t want me to tell Jian Mo, so Jian Mo believed the old marshal miscalculated, leading to the ambush. A team nearly all went berserk, and in the final battle, even the old marshal succumbed.”
“I saw news reports claiming the brothers following the old marshal to the front line were killed by Jian Mo?”
Major Xin snorted.
“Half were actually seriously injured by the berserk old marshal. What could Jian Mo do? He couldn’t disobey the marshal’s final orders or waste all efforts at the last moment. He had no choice but to obey.”
Major Xin glanced at Shi Xiaowang.
Shi Xiaowang instinctively looked away.
He had to obey.
The order was obvious…
His heart sank.
He had suspected Jian Mo might have faced something like this before—but hearing it from someone who lived through it made him feel unbearably heavy.
Major Xin smiled.
“Jian Mo is now a marshal. I watched him grow up. When his parents were alive, he trained at the base with us. He was arrogant as a child but talented. He always said he would become a marshal one day, and now he has achieved it.”
Shi Xiaowang bit his lip, fiddling with the small rose on his wrist.
But Jian Mo surely didn’t want it realized this way.
“I knew he’s been under a lot of pressure. So when Little Meng said you’re married and happy, I felt relieved. I thought it best to tell you beforehand. That child is stubborn; once set, nothing can persuade him. I guess he never told you these things.”
Major Xin looked at him, satisfied.
“Jian Mo has been this way since childhood, especially after his parents’ sacrifice. His stubbornness can be childish, and silence is sometimes his way of showing love. If he doesn’t speak, no one knows, and the old marshal remains an invincible hero—even though Jian Mo knows the marshal wouldn’t want him to act this way.”
Leaving Major Xin’s room, Shi Xiaowang went to the back hill.
Sitting on the grass, he looked at the two wooden carvings in his hands.
One was the little lion he gave Jian Mo the night of the investiture.
The other was a gift he gave to Brother M—a small dog.
He had seen it in the study.
Originally, he thought Jian Mo was at the research institute and planned to confront him.
He remembered Major Xin’s words: silence can be a way of expressing love.
He also recalled his complaints to Jian Da Meow at home—always saying nothing, childish jerk.
Shi Xiaowang grinned at the wooden carvings.
He felt an intense pang of heartache.
