Chapter 15
Meng Zhan looked at him and sighed.
“If I told you he’s completely fine, you definitely wouldn’t believe me, would you?”
Shi Xiaowang looked at him in silence.
“He’s been on the front lines, following the old marshal through countless battles for years. The pollution in his body is indeed severe. But his spiritual strength has always been much stronger than most, so compared to Major General Xin, his overall condition is relatively stable.”
Meng Zhan told him truthfully.
“As long as we can completely suppress the spread of the pollution now, there’s no problem with him surviving safely. With those purified plants of yours around, I can guarantee that much. But since most of the pollution still remains in his spiritual sea, he must not get overly emotional, otherwise his condition could still worsen.”
“If we completely purify it, he’ll get better, right? Can I just directly purify his spiritual sea?”
Shi Xiaowang asked immediately.
Meng Zhan’s expression grew unusually serious.
“The human body is far more delicate and complex than plants. It’s not something that can be done easily. Leaving aside the tremendous pressure you’d have to bear—there’s also the risk that such a high-intensity purification could damage your body, or make your powers unstable. There are too many unpredictable factors. He would never allow you to do that.”
“Besides, you saw it yourself—there are far too many people falling into madness, on the verge of berserk, or already suffering spiritual pollution. You might be able to heal him, but what about the others? You can’t save everyone. You could choose to be his personal healer, but he would never accept that kind of privilege—nor let you become a target of public pressure.”
On the way back from the base, Shi Xiaowang grew quiet—so quiet that it almost felt like despair.
He had thought that since he’d successfully purified the plants, Jian Mo and the others could be treated. But now he realized the help he could offer was just a drop in the ocean.
When he returned to the Marshal’s Mansion, he’d barely stepped into the courtyard before he saw the lion by the roadside.
The evening sky was already dotted with faint stars, and the yellow streetlights replaced the glow of sunset. The once-white lion was now bathed in a soft golden hue—gentle yet majestic.
Shi Xiaowang froze for a moment, then his eyes curved into a smile.
“Were you waiting for me to come home?”
The lion stared at him for a long time before slowly walking over.
It gently rubbed its furry forehead against the back of his hand, then sat down before him. Its tail curled around his ankle, and it raised its head, chin resting against his waist, gazing up into his eyes.
“Jian Da Meow?”
Shi Xiaowang’s eyes widened in surprise and delight.
“Are you… acting spoiled?”
The lion’s gaze softened, its tail swaying lightly.
“Ah, that tickles.”
Shi Xiaowang shrank back a little, laughing as he bent down to hug him.
“I can’t believe you’re being affectionate now!”
After sending Shi Xiaowang off from the base, Meng Zhan immediately told Jian Mo what had happened that day.
Shi Xiaowang had probably been frightened today.
Jian Mo thought, he needed to go and stay with him.
But truthfully, it wasn’t only out of concern for Shi Xiaowang’s emotions—his own were also turbulent and tangled.
When he heard that Shi Xiaowang blamed himself for not being able to heal him, Jian Mo had almost rushed to his side at once.
That instant, he’d felt a kind of heartache and helplessness he’d never experienced before—the urge to comfort him, yet not knowing how to begin.
“Da Meow.”
Shi Xiaowang crouched on the ground, hugging him tightly, his face buried in the lion’s thick mane as he muttered,
“I met one of my mom’s friends today. She said I look just like her. I didn’t know before, but turns out Ms. Wang Shuxue was actually kind of childish, you know? She gave me this name, Shi Xiaowang, just so when people called me, she’d have an excuse to join in the fun.”
“But I think that’s nice. This way, she gets to be part of my life forever. This name is mine, but it’s also hers.”
“I also planted roses with Aunt Ling today. I hope the little roses at the institute grow up strong and bloom beautifully. Oh, right—I heard the flower trellis was made by Ms. Wang Shuxue too. Isn’t that amazing?”
“I even met Major General Xin today… Teacher Meng said he used to be the old marshal’s adjutant. See? I’ve even met the old marshal’s adjutant, but I still haven’t met Jian Mo yet. Who did I even marry, huh? I can’t even see his face. Why don’t we just get married ourselves—you even came to pick me up after all.”
Shi Xiaowang laughed at his own joke.
Jian Mo’s eyes softened with helpless affection. He lowered his head, extended his forepaw, and lifted Shi Xiaowang up to sit on his arm.
Shi Xiaowang obediently changed positions, lying across him quietly for a long while before speaking again, his voice a little hoarse.
“I’ve never been to the battlefield, but I know war is cruel. If only… if only I could be a little more useful. The world doesn’t just need flowers—it needs people healthy enough to witness them bloom. But right now, I can’t even do that…”
The lion let out a low rumble, rubbing his cheek gently against Shi Xiaowang’s face.
You’re already amazing. Truly amazing.
Shi Xiaowang smiled and rubbed the lion’s head.
“You’re comforting me, aren’t you?”
He sat up, his slightly red eyes still glistening as he smiled and took a deep breath, stretching his arms.
“I’m fine. This is just the beginning. I’ll become more useful, you’ll see. One day, we’ll cure this damn berserk syndrome!”
He looked into the lion’s eyes and grinned.
“Let’s have a race! From here to the greenhouse. If I win, you’ll move into the greenhouse to keep me company. If you win, I’ll help you move into the greenhouse and stay with you. How about it?”
The lion didn’t respond. It just stretched lazily—and before Shi Xiaowang could react, it bolted toward the greenhouse.
“Hey?! That’s cheating!”
Shi Xiaowang shouted as he chased after him.
Back in the greenhouse, Shi Xiaowang put on his mask and checked the condition of the little roses.
He hadn’t streamed all day, so when his face suddenly appeared on camera, the chat instantly exploded.
[Yo! The streamer’s back! Scared me, I thought someone was stealing the roses!]
[Where’ve you been? You left the babies alone all day!]
[Without you, Brother M didn’t even get a chance to send gifts!]
[Wait, did you go meet Brother M offline?!]
[Huh?! What happened? I just got here!]
“Don’t make wild guesses,” Shi Xiaowang quickly explained.
“I went to the research institute today to meet one of my mom’s friends.”
Then he smiled.
“Our little roses are very independent! And besides, they’ve got so many godfathers and godmothers online watching over them. They’re never lonely, right?”
[That’s right! I’ve been chatting with them telepathically all day. They’re in great spirits!]
[No, I was the one talking to them!]
[Move aside, impostors! I’m the real godmother!]
“Huh? What are you saying, babies?”
Shi Xiaowang leaned close to the roses as if he were listening seriously.
“Oh, I see. Then I’ll tell them.”
[Tell us what?! What did the babies say?!]
“They said you’re all right. As long as you love them, you’re all their godparents, and they can feel it.”
He said this with a straight face.
[Aww~ The babies can feel our love! So touched!]
[Me too, I’m crying!]
[I heard them say they love me back!]
[Me too!]
Watching the flood of dramatic comments, Shi Xiaowang couldn’t help but laugh.
Then a flashy effect popped up on screen—cutting everyone off instantly. The chat erupted again.
[It’s Brother M! Finally! Gifts are saved!]
[Yay, I can sleep now!]
After admiring the holographic gift, Shi Xiaowang said, “Thank you for the gift, Brother M. Did you receive the little dog?”
[Received it. Very cute.]
M replied.
“That’s good! If you ever want anything else, just tell me.”
[Flowers.]
Brother M’s reply was short and firm.
“No problem! Delivery guaranteed!”
Shi Xiaowang patted his chest.
“Alright, that’s it for tonight’s stream. I’m a little tired from going out today, so I’ll head to bed. I’ll leave our rose babies in your care, godparents.”
[Go rest, Dad, we’ve got the babies covered.]
[Don’t worry, Dad.]
[Good night, Dad.]
“Ah… you guys…”
Shi Xiaowang pointed helplessly at the screen, finally muttering just two words.
“…Fine then.”
When he went upstairs, he saw the lion already lying on the bed pretending to sleep, and his smile grew even brighter.
He bounded forward, grabbing the lion’s paw and shaking it.
“Don’t sleep yet, Da Meow! I wanna show you something!”
When the lion opened his eyes to look at him, Shi Xiaowang tapped on his light-brain a few times. The snow-white walls turned transparent, revealing a full glass view.
The greenhouse was close to the mountain behind, and with the windows open, the cool summer night breeze drifted in, carrying the scent of grass and trees. As the sound of crickets filled the air, Shi Xiaowang snuggled back onto the bed, resting his head on the lion’s belly, and gazed at the night sky.
“Da Meow, look—the sky isn’t just full of stars, there are nebulae too.”
He pointed upward.
The lion rested his head on his paws, his gaze lingering on Shi Xiaowang’s face. When Shi Xiaowang spoke, he finally lifted his eyes to the sky.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”
Shi Xiaowang’s eyes curved as he reached back to grab the lion’s tail, gently pinching the tip.
The sensitive tail twitched instinctively, trying to pull away, but Shi Xiaowang anticipated it and held tight, laughing triumphantly.
The lion glanced at him, then suddenly yanked its tail back, swatting Shi Xiaowang’s hand in warning.
Shi Xiaowang wasn’t scared in the least. Instead, he protested righteously,
“Come on, don’t be so stingy! I didn’t even pull hard.”
Then, shamelessly, he grabbed the tail again.
This time, the lion didn’t dodge—just ignored him.
Shi Xiaowang didn’t mind, continuing to gaze at the stars.
“The nebulae are really beautiful. You probably see them often, huh? Back in my world, I couldn’t even see the stars—just layers of dark clouds. Or maybe not clouds… it was more like some kind of pollutant. I don’t even know what it was.”
Hearing this, Jian Mo turned his gaze back to Shi Xiaowang, his eyes full of quiet curiosity.
“In the future… will you watch the stars with me every day?”
Before Jian Mo could respond, Shi Xiaowang suddenly rolled over and wrapped his arms around the lion’s neck, his face just a fist’s distance away, smiling with bright peach-blossom eyes.
His gaze traced along Jian Mo’s high nose bridge, stopping on the flush of his lips.
Jian Mo tilted his head back, looking away, and used his paw to push Shi Xiaowang back down.
He’d meant to put some distance between them—but the moment Shi Xiaowang spoke, that intention evaporated.
“Hey, so forward! Do you want to cuddle me to sleep?”
The lion tried to pull his paw back, but Shi Xiaowang caught it.
“You can’t run away! I don’t care if you want to or not—you’re staying with me.”
Shi Xiaowang giggled and buried himself in the lion’s mane, rubbing his ears.
“Good night, Jian Da Meow.”
Before long, his breathing slowed and deepened. Jian Da Meow sighed softly, adjusting his stiff posture.
Good night, he thought.
Though there’s nothing peaceful about this at all…
