Chapter 13
Shi Xiaowang sent a private message.
[Brother M, do you have a favorite animal?]
Seeing the message, Jian Mo felt a bit puzzled. After thinking for a moment, he replied:
[Dogs, I guess.]
Shi Xiaowang raised an eyebrow.
[What a coincidence—I like them too.]
Jian Mo smiled.
Was this narcissism?
After getting the reply, Shi Xiaowang picked up a handy piece of wood and sketched a simple structure on it.
[What are you doing? No flower planting today?]
Someone who had logged into the livestream early asked.
“I’ve already done what needed to be done. Other things still require the plants’ growth time, so today I plan to make a wood carving.”
Shi Xiaowang explained while continuing his work.
[A wood carving? The streamer’s actually a craftsman!]
[Freehand carving? That’s a real skill! These days hardly anyone does this kind of thing.]
[Not hardly anyone. This craft is almost a lost art now. Where did the streamer learn it?]
“Don’t exaggerate so much. I’m not a professional; I just tinker with it to pass time when I’m free.”
Shi Xiaowang quickly explained.
“I’m still far from a real craftsman.”
[Who has time to tinker with wood carvings? I even find playing games exhausting.]
[True, just thinking about tinkering with this while livestreaming is impressive.]
[Exactly!]
Seeing a row of thumbs-up in the chat, Shi Xiaowang laughed.
“Ah, you flatter me.”
This was one of the few hobbies in his memory that coincided with the original owner. Both of them had learned it by themselves, without formal training.
As for why the original owner started wood carving, it was mentioned in his mother’s diary. Also, the hobby didn’t require thinking too hard or interacting with others. So the couple let him pursue it, and he could always ask the butler for any wood or tools he needed.
While working on the craft, Shi Xiaowang chatted casually with viewers in the comments.
They talked from wood carving to daily hobbies, from gossip news to dreams and ideals—the topics were diverse and random.
Shi Xiaowang quite enjoyed this pace of conversation.
[Why is the streamer so obsessed with planting flowers?]
[I want to ask too. I’ve been here since the start, but honestly, I still don’t believe the little rose baby will bloom. Don’t be mad, streamer; I’ll always support you.]
[It’s not the viewers’ fault for doubting; it really seems unrealistic.]
“When it comes to why I insist on planting flowers…”
Shi Xiaowang paused his hands, a little serious.
“Because flowers represent beauty and happiness.”
[…Can we just chat happily? That’s too perfunctory!]
[So positive! Streamer, go apply to the research institute. You’d definitely get in.]
The chat was filled with playful teasing.
“Apply to the research institute? That’s true.”
Shi Xiaowang smiled.
“This is my mother’s definition of flowers, and also her final wish. She worked at the research institute while alive, a mental-power plant researcher like me. Her greatest wish was for everyone to see the flowers bloom. She said the day the flowers bloom is when happiness arrives. So, I hope I can fulfill her wish for her.”
The chat suddenly quieted.
After a while, people slowly started typing “Cheer up.”
[Then I’ll believe in the little rose baby. Watching them grow from seeds into cute little things these past few days, maybe one day they’ll bloom like a transformation at eighteen.]
[Exactly! Streamer, we give you our strength!]
[Give strength +1]
Shi Xiaowang turned the camera toward the nearby rose flowers and smiled:
“Come, come, let our little rose feel the power of everyone’s love up close!”
The chat sent row after row of hearts, laughing and teasing.
Suddenly, a holographic effect covered everyone.
A calico cat with heart patterns poked its head out from the screen, amber eyes wide, looking around curiously among the roses. Seeing the stunned Shi Xiaowang, it seemed to recognize its long-lost master, meowing and circling around him, tail upright.
Little hearts popped up around it, bursting like fireworks.
Shi Xiaowang instinctively reached out, and the calico nuzzled his fingertip.
The furry touch made his pupils dilate.
Ah! You can actually touch it!
This wasn’t just a gift—it was like a sprite had accidentally escaped!
“Thanks to Brother M for the gift! Really grateful! I love it!”
Shi Xiaowang’s voice was filled with joy.
[Looks like the streamer likes plush animals.]
[You can tell. This is the streamer’s most genuine thanks ever, hahaha.]
[Brother M silently gives gifts without saying a word.]
Seeing Shi Xiaowang reluctant to let the cat disappear, Jian Mo added more money, extending the gift effect.
“No need! Just look at it; don’t keep spending!”
Shi Xiaowang hurriedly stopped him.
When the cat finally disappeared again, Shi Xiaowang looked out the window.
“Speaking of which, I have a really cool big cat at home. Lately, I’ve been too busy taking care of the little roses to play with him. I wonder if he’ll ignore me when I get back.”
Some big cat squinted its eyes, flicked its ears. It knows I’m thinking of it, but doesn’t actually want me to come see it. Not sincere.
The big cat flicked its tail, passing judgment.
[How cool? I want to see!]
[Bring it into the livestream! You’re already a craft streamer; a pet stream isn’t impossible.]
[Agree! Want to see the big cat!]
“Ah, it’s not that I don’t want to.”
Shi Xiaowang began to complain.
“I like him so much, I treat him so well. But when I told him to come to the greenhouse with me, he just ran away! No conscience!”
[Hahaha.]
[Cats are like that, naturally love freedom.]
A certain big cat, watching the livestream and giving gifts daily, opened its eyes wide. Who’s got no conscience?!
As Shi Xiaowang chatted with viewers, the wood carving gradually took shape:
A lively, playful little dog.
Shi Xiaowang blew off the wood shavings and examined it carefully.
The tiny dog, palm-sized, grinned foolishly, its fur seeming to flutter with the wind.
Satisfied, Shi Xiaowang patted off the remaining shavings and held the dog up to the camera.
“Not bad, right?”
The audience went wild.
[Not bad?! This is amazing!]
[So cute! How long did it take to carve this? It’s already so complete! And you’re not a professional?]
[Does the streamer take custom orders?]
“You like it?”
Shi Xiaowang smiled, pleased.
After receiving praise and requests, he stretched:
“I’m not planning to sell it for now. This is a gift for Brother M. But if you like, I can make some small charms in the future and give them away in livestream raffles.”
[Oh, it’s Brother M’s gift.]
[Raffle? When? Can’t wait!]
[If it’s a raffle, won’t Brother M lose out?]
“Who says? Brother M’s gift is designated; he can ask for anything and I’ll make it. Raffle items are random—I give what I give, you get what you get. How is that a loss?”
Shi Xiaowang countered.
[Still, that’s not special enough!]
[Brother M, speak up! Can’t let everyone just benefit you.]
[I propose, streamer shows their face!]
“Show my face?” Shi Xiaowang laughed.
“That wouldn’t be fair. I can’t cover your eyes.”
[Brother M, are you there?]
[Make your requests now! What a good chance!]
Finally, M spoke:
[I have no requests. Anything you send, I’ll like it.]
The chat erupted even more.
[OMG! Brother M, don’t be so generous!]
[Does the streamer really not know Brother M? Honestly, I’ve never seen someone gift unconditionally like this, and all such expensive gifts. If Brother M wasn’t expecting anything, I don’t believe it.]
[I agree! Streamer, think about it—maybe Brother M is secretly watching you somewhere!]
[In this day and age, such pure-hearted big brothers are rare. I support Brother M!]
Seeing the comments getting out of hand, Shi Xiaowang quickly intervened:
“Don’t stir things up! I have a partner.”
After a brief silence, a row of question marks appeared in the chat.
[Is Brother M not high enough in status? Are the gifts not good enough? Streamer, really not tempted?]
“I never said Brother M was bad, but my partner is great too.”
Shi Xiaowang responded without hesitation.
Somewhere, a certain big cat first looked surprised, then smiled, eyes glinting with unrecognized pride, continuing to stir up trouble for fun.
[Doesn’t matter, I have money.]
Shi Xiaowang raised an eyebrow. What now? Troublemaking?
“My partner has money too, and treats me really well,” he said.
[Do I treat you badly?]
M asked.
Shi Xiaowang: …
Well, that’s true, can’t say you do.
With the chat erupting layer after layer, Shi Xiaowang opened his mouth a few times but couldn’t think of a rebuttal.
Seeing him struggle, Jian Mo finally laughed and helped him out:
[I said I have money. Sending a few gifts is nothing—don’t overthink. When the flowers bloom, send me a pot too—that’s a reasonable investment.]
Shi Xiaowang immediately patted his chest:
“Of course! When the time comes, you can pick whichever one you like, and I’ll send that one!”
On the surface, their issue seemed resolved, but the livestream viewers weren’t done—they still shouted for them to be together.
“Stop stirring things up,” Shi Xiaowang said.
“My partner and I have a really good relationship.”
He wanted to use the livestream to change some people’s bias toward Jian Mo. Praising him now would help viewers adjust their perception when their identities were revealed.
Though he didn’t know how much change would happen, he wanted to try.
“I’ve been with him for a long time. He’s always helped me. He gave me a safe, warm harbor, an elder who cares for me, a big cat who’s cool but soft-hearted. He freed me from my nightmares. He senses all my needs and arranges everything immediately. Back then, I just said I wanted to try planting flowers; the next day, the greenhouse started construction.”
Shi Xiaowang lowered his head to touch the little rose’s leaves, sincere.
“He’s truly a good person. Even though he bears a lot of pressure himself, he never seems to be crushed. Sometimes I feel for him too, though he might not want pity. But I want to be his support, just as I rely on him.”
The livestream fell silent.
Even Jian Mo, watching from the screen, was unusually speechless.
He had never imagined Shi Xiaowang would see him this way, or regard him so importantly.
Saying he wasn’t moved would be a lie.
Shi Xiaowang’s presence had freed him from nightmares—maybe it worked both ways. On the battlefield, he couldn’t let go of what had happened. But lately, Shi Xiaowang’s presence shielded him. He could now lie in the sun instead of locking himself in a dark room, obsessively recalling how he ended the old marshal’s life.
He wanted to tell Shi Xiaowang: you’re good too.
But clicking his avatar, he didn’t send anything.
Instead of telling him something, it was better…
To treat him well.
A little better.
