Chapter 11
The construction of the greenhouse was quickly put on the schedule.
In Shi Xiaowang’s imagination, a greenhouse was just a simple, makeshift structure, like the one the old man built in the post-apocalyptic base, at most using slightly higher-grade materials.
But he hadn’t expected that the greenhouse Jian Mo was building for him would essentially meet the standards of a research institute, leaving Shi Xiaowang completely astonished.
It was fortunate that the Marshal’s Mansion was large enough.
Originally, Meng Zhan had planned to take the purified plant back to the research institute the day the livestream ended, but when he saw the equipment that couldn’t be transported the next day, he simply stayed and participated in the entire process.
From start to finish, it took over half a month, and Shi Xiaowang felt a bit guilty. During that time, he also purified a few more potted plants and handed them to Meng Zhan, rubbing his nose and telling him that having the director supervise was truly overkill.
“But it’s not overkill at all. All the instruments and devices in this greenhouse are top-of-the-line. Not only for growing flowers, even for research it’s more than enough. Maybe someday I can come and borrow some equipment…”
Meng Zhan smacked his lips, standing outside the greenhouse with Shi Xiaowang, watching the last scattered furnishings being moved in piece by piece.
He had said this many times—almost every time he saw new equipment being brought in, he would widen his eyes in awe and remark: “Jian Mo really spares no expense.”
At first, Shi Xiaowang felt uneasy hearing this, and quickly sent Jian Mo a message saying that there was no need to spend so much, it was just for growing flowers. Even without high-tech equipment, he could still make flowers bloom.
Jian Mo quickly replied, essentially saying that of course he trusted Shi Xiaowang’s abilities, and as for the rest, don’t worry about it—he had money.
Shi Xiaowang’s feelings were complicated. To him, Jian Mo now held yet another identity beyond Marshal, future in-law, and benefactor: that of a patron.
Not knowing how to bring it up, Shi Xiaowang didn’t message Jian Mo again for quite a while, so he still had no idea how expensive the greenhouse really was.
However, claiming he wasn’t interested in the instruments would definitely be a lie. Meng Zhan had taught him the functions and usage of the equipment, and Shi Xiaowang constantly wished that the greenhouse would be completed the very next day so he could go in and play with everything.
For over half a month, aside from sleeping and reviewing previous lessons, he spent nearly all his remaining time in the greenhouse.
“Yo, come to supervise?”
Meng Zhan suddenly spoke, interrupting Shi Xiaowang’s thoughts.
Before Shi Xiaowang turned around, the back of his hand touched a soft, furry texture. Looking down, he saw the semi-circular ears of the lion.
Jian Da Meow slowly took a couple of steps forward, glanced up at him, and sat on the grass by Shi Xiaowang’s leg, flicking his tail without paying any attention to him.
Jian Da Meow seemed a bit displeased.
Shi Xiaowang curved his eyes into a smile, bent down, and hugged the lion’s neck, gently rubbing his ears like coaxing a child.
“Whose handsome kitty is this? Oh, it’s mine!”
Shi Xiaowang pinched Jian Da Meow’s face, forced eye contact, and seeing the lion’s slightly dissatisfied gaze, chuckled, then exaggeratedly planted a kiss on his forehead.
The lion was caught off guard, ears twitching and fur slightly raised. He blinked, the tip of his tail flicking twice behind him.
Seeing that the lion had no intention of running, Shi Xiaowang smoothed his fur and explained:
“Sorry, big kitty. I’ve been too busy lately and haven’t spent much time with you. Once this period is over, I’ll spend more time playing with you, okay?”
Before the lion could respond, Uncle Ye called him from inside the greenhouse.
“Young master, is it okay to place this flower rack here?”
Shi Xiaowang replied with a nod, ruffled the lion’s head again, and quickly ran over.
“I’m coming! Let me see!”
Estimating that Shi Xiaowang was about to get busy again, Jian Mo looked over the finished greenhouse and got up to leave.
“Feeling satisfied? The attention-seeking hubby.”
Meng Zhan teased without restraint.
Jian Mo glanced at him and returned the teasing:
[Full already? Unwanted single guy.]
…Tsk.
Meng Zhan immediately deleted the message he had just received and blocked him.
Jian Mo was a little worried about Shi Xiaowang.
Since the greenhouse construction started, Shi Xiaowang hadn’t had a moment of rest. Besides participating in the build and learning to use the equipment with Meng Zhan, he never neglected running, exercise, or his studies. At night, he continued to refine his purification ability and prepare soil and seeds he would use later, spinning around like a top.
At first, Jian Mo enjoyed the peace, since he could finally sleep undisturbed.
But later, he would deliberately wander near Shi Xiaowang to see what he was doing.
Shi Xiaowang was extremely focused while working. He didn’t even notice Jian Da Meow nearby, but whenever he accidentally touched the lion, he would instinctively pet him, yet his mind remained on the task at hand.
Jian Mo felt helpless and amused, as if he had become a stress-relief plush toy.
He admired Shi Xiaowang’s focus but couldn’t help worrying that he might overwork and strain his body.
But soon, Jian Mo had no time even to linger near Shi Xiaowang.
After the greenhouse was completed, to make planting and livestreaming convenient, Shi Xiaowang planned to move in directly. Before moving, he had spent quite some time coaxing Jian Da Meow.
“Come live in the greenhouse with me. I won’t sleep well if you’re not there. Don’t you want to stay with me?”
Shi Xiaowang’s eyes were earnest and expectant.
The lion flicked his tail, hesitant, but not entirely refusing.
“And I specially ordered a big bed. We can roll around on it, there’s plenty of space for you to sleep. You can play however you want—come live with me.”
Shi Xiaowang tried to tempt him.
But the temptation seemed electrifying, making the normally lazy lion puff up into a ball, barely restraining the impulse to paw at Shi Xiaowang’s face.
Big bed, rolling around…
The lion’s ears twitched in complexity as he stared at the naive Shi Xiaowang.
Until Uncle Ye couldn’t help laughing, Jian Da Meow finally fluffed up and ran away.
Shi Xiaowang felt a little regretful that he couldn’t convince the lion, but only slightly—after all, they were still in the Marshal’s Mansion, and he could pet the lion anytime.
Once he had moved in and organized the greenhouse, Shi Xiaowang froze for a moment.
Growing flowers wasn’t difficult, but livestreaming was unfamiliar territory.
During the greenhouse construction, he had watched other livestreams extensively.
Recently, plant-themed streams had surged in popularity due to the little duke. Many self-proclaimed plant-type psychics had begun livestreaming as a gimmick, but most still focused on themselves, at most adding a few potted plants to create a botanical vibe. Very few actually focused on growing plants.
Without any examples to reference, he had to figure things out on his own.
Shi Xiaowang placed a photo of the original owner’s parents out of the camera’s view so viewers could see the greenhouse fully, then named his livestream and went live while wearing a mask.
The seeds were selected from a wooden box left by the original owner’s mother. He didn’t plan to plant too many at once, choosing only a few of a single variety. Though skilled at planting, he worried about making mistakes that could ruin these heirlooms.
When the greenhouse construction began, Shi Xiaowang had already chosen the plants he wanted to grow.
At that time, he had just been picked up by the old man, and as his body gradually recovered, the old man gave him a rose fruit.
At first, he didn’t know what a blooming rose would look like. It was his first attempt at growing a plant, and the old man taught him step by step how to process the seeds in the fruit and how to plant and water them.
Later, when he awakened his purification ability, his rose bloomed.
On the day the rose bloomed, Shi Xiaowang stood there for a long time. The life he had carefully nurtured had produced such a beautiful flower. He touched the petals cautiously, feeling tingling in his fingertips.
The old man didn’t grow it for beauty, but for its medicinal value. Still, those roses gave Shi Xiaowang his first sense of life’s beauty and his first desire to live.
Shi Xiaowang focused the camera on the rose fruit, only showing his hands.
Viewers entering the livestream were baffled, watching him take the seeds out one by one.
[What is he doing? Dissecting a fruit?]
[What kind of fruit is that?]
“Nope,” Shi Xiaowang replied, seeing the comments.
“This is a rose fruit. These are the seeds inside. Roses are beautiful flowers, but before planting, the seeds need some processing.”
[? Is the streamer really going to grow flowers?]
[It’s possible to grow plants from seeds, but to make them bloom? Isn’t that wishful thinking?]
[The way he talks, it seems like he’s really seen flowers bloom. Probably just showboating.]
[Bloom? Is the streamer trying to create a miracle?]
“You can look forward to it,” Shi Xiaowang smiled without arguing.
Most of the comments were mocking him, though a few asked thoughtful questions, which he answered before focusing on his task.
Soon, the comment section quieted down, and the number of viewers slowly decreased.
By the window, the lion lay on the sofa, lazily flicking his tail.
Uncle Ye passed by him three or four times. Observing the lion, unsure if bored or irritated, finally spoke.
“Want to go check the greenhouse?”
The lion’s tail stopped, and he immediately flipped onto his side, giving Uncle Ye a “refusal” back, while his ears twitched like on guard.
Uncle Ye chuckled but didn’t expose him.
“Alright, I’ll go deliver some daily necessities to the young master.”
Hearing the door close, Jian Mo turned his gaze back to the floating screen.
He didn’t understand much about livestreaming, but seeing Shi Xiaowang’s viewers gradually drop, he searched for ways to boost it. Finally, with a flourish, he sent the most expensive gift.
The sudden special effect startled Shi Xiaowang.
The gift had a holographic effect. Shi Xiaowang, who had been handling seeds in the greenhouse, suddenly felt as if he were under a starry sky. Bewildered, he looked up to see the once-white ceiling replaced by a galaxy, faint auroras swirling around the brilliant stars.
Immersed in the scene, he momentarily forgot where he was, unable to help exclaim:
“So beautiful.”
Before he could finish, the scenery changed again.
A series of gift effects finally made Shi Xiaowang realize that the livestream was filling up with more viewers. The comment stream flew past, and within minutes, his livestream was pushed to the homepage’s most prominent spot.
A capital “M” hung at the top of the leaderboard.
