Chapter 21: We’re Getting Married
Silence was tonight’s “Cambridge Bridge.”[1]
Xie Sicheng was silent, and Chi Wang followed suit.
Xie was doubting if he had misheard, while Chi Wang was cringing at his own words.
Because this was straight out of an 8 p.m. soap opera!
The atmosphere grew increasingly awkward until Chi Wang finally broke the stalemate.
He took out the small stack of medical reports, placed them on the table, and pushed them over, pretending to be calm. “If you don’t believe me, look at the reports—they’re fresh off the press.”
Xie’s gaze shifted lightly, landing on Chi Wang’s face. Although Chi Wang feigned composure, his lips involuntarily pressed together. A faint blush rose on his fair and beautiful cheeks. After all, he was young and couldn’t fully conceal his emotions.
Lowering his eyes, Xie finally focused on the reports. After a pause, he reached out and picked up the stack.
The first thing he saw was the diagnosis result: Early Pregnancy (Approximately 8 Weeks).
Xie: “…”
He couldn’t help but close his eyes and pinch the bridge of his nose before reopening them to look again.
The result was the same.
Xie’s gaze slowly moved upward, as if trying to discern something from the two ultrasound images.
After a while, his long fingers pinched the corner of the report and flipped to the next page—another report, also diagnosing pregnancy. Flipping another page yielded the same.
Continuing further, he found standard physical examination reports, with significant time gaps between them.
Xie spent a long time reviewing the reports.
Chi Wang didn’t just sit idly by. A cup of latte wasn’t cheap—over forty yuan. So he held his nose and drank it. Strangely enough, he seemed to accept the taste quite well now. It didn’t make him nauseous; in fact, he could appreciate the good flavor of the coffee.
His eyes lit up, and he started sipping the latte eagerly.
At that moment, Xie suddenly put down the reports. With his unique cold and magnetic voice, he said to Chi Wang, “You shouldn’t drink coffee while pregnant.”
“Oh.” Chi Wang sheepishly set down the coffee cup but quickly reacted, his pupils dilating in surprise. “You… you’re just accepting it?”
Xie replied, “You wouldn’t lie to me.”
Chi Wang looked at him with a peculiar expression. He had been prepared to accompany Xie to another hospital for verification, yet Xie accepted it so readily? He trusted him that much?
As expected of a physics student—their ability to accept new things is top-notch.
Chi Wang quickly felt pleased. Since Xie accepted it, discussing the rest would be much smoother.
In a brief period, Xie had also made up his mind—it wasn’t that difficult.
His calm and deep gaze fell on Chi Wang. In a deep voice, he asked, “Do you prefer a Chinese-style wedding or a Western-style one?”
Chi Wang: “???”
Startled, Chi Wang looked at him. Noticing Chi Wang’s surprised expression, Xie slightly frowned, not quite understanding why he reacted that way. But he soon relaxed his brows and continued sharing his thoughts. “The earliest we can hold the wedding is New Year’s Day. You’ll need to give me some time to prepare.”
Chi Wang: “…Huh?”
Wait, how did the topic shift to marriage?
Chi Wang hurriedly said, “When I said you need to take responsibility, I meant you should cover the examination and abortion costs. I didn’t ask you to take responsibility for this. We’re both men; why would we get married?”
Xie: “?”
He frowned, his tone firm. “We are getting married.”
Chi Wang: “…You mean you’ll only reimburse me if we get married?”
Xie: “…”
He asked in a low voice, “You want an abortion?”
“Yes, of course! If you were pregnant, would you want to give birth?” Chi Wang paused and continued, “Abortions are quite expensive, so I came to you for the money.”
Xie fell silent. After a while, he asked, “How much does the abortion cost?”
Chi Wang said, “150,000 yuan.”
He deliberately mentioned the full amount, expecting Xie to negotiate.
Though he doubted Xie would bargain.
Sure enough, Xie didn’t haggle. He asked Chi Wang for his payment code, took out his phone, and transferred 150,000 yuan to him.
Chi Wang hadn’t expected it to be so straightforward and breathed a sigh of relief.
After sending the money, Xie continued, “I own a hospital in this city. I’d like you to undergo a comprehensive examination there. You can also have the surgery at my hospital; that way, I’ll feel more at ease.”
He spoke slowly, enunciating each word. Paired with his cold and handsome face, he appeared exceptionally earnest.
Chi Wang was momentarily stunned. “Is it reliable?”
“…” Xie replied, “Yes, it’s reliable. It’s been in operation for over a hundred years—a time-honored establishment.”
Chi Wang was amused by the term “time-honored,” laughing with his eyes slightly squinted, starlight shimmering, lips red and teeth white—extremely attractive.
Laughing, he asked, “Is it expensive?”
Xie said, “There will be no charge, and I will take care of you afterward.”
Chi Wang’s laughter stopped, feeling a bit awkward. “You don’t need to take care of me; just giving me the money is enough.”
In a calm tone, Xie said, “You asked me to take responsibility. This is how I take responsibility—we get married, or I take care of you until you recover. Choose one.”
Chi Wang: “…”
He suddenly felt that Xie wasn’t the kind of person he had imagined. Initially, he had maliciously speculated that Xie’s private life was messy. But now, upon learning of his pregnancy, Xie was actually talking about marriage? That was too responsible—not like the stereotypical wealthy second-generation he had in mind.
Chi Wang couldn’t help but ask, “Are you serious about getting married? Can you make that decision?”
Xie straightened up even more. “My family is harmonious. My father is easygoing, my mother is gentle and kind; they respect my choices. I just need some time to inform them about the marriage, and organizing a wedding will also take time.”
Chi Wang understood. “Alright, I see. But I’m sorry, I don’t intend to get married. I don’t like men. That day was an accident—a mistake. You don’t need to force it.”
“…” Xie lowered his eyes, his tone deepening. “I’ll accompany you to the hospital tomorrow.”
Chi Wang considered the feasibility of changing hospitals. “Does your hospital have good doctors?”
Xie replied, “Yes, my friend.”
Chi Wang: “!”
Detecting essential elements…[2]
They say every CEO has a doctor friend!
Amused, Chi Wang couldn’t help but ask, “How skilled is he? Is he an obstetrician?”
His occasional smiles exuded a vibrant life force so strong it was almost tangible, irresistibly drawing others’ attention.
Gazing at Chi Wang’s face, Xie’s eyes were deep, carrying a hint of focus even he hadn’t noticed. “He’s very skilled and is indeed an obstetrician.”
Chi Wang decided, “Alright then, let’s go to your hospital. I’ll return the money to you.”
Xie refused, “No need; you keep it.”
Chi Wang insisted, “I don’t want it.”
Being action-oriented, he directly grabbed Xie’s phone and transferred the money back to him.
Hearing the notification of money received, Xie said nothing.
Having resolved a major issue, Chi Wang felt more relaxed. “So that’s settled. See you tomorrow. I’m leaving.”
Xie stood up and picked up the stack of reports. “I’ll keep these reports for now.”
Chi Wang didn’t mind. “Sure.”
As they walked toward the counter, Chi Wang was quicker and paid first. He said to Xie, “It’s my treat. You can treat me next time.”
Xie wasn’t as quick and could only agree.
After leaving the café, they parted ways since they were heading in different directions.
Chi Wang initially jogged toward the school gate but soon slowed down, walking leisurely. Subconsciously, he reached out to touch his stomach.
Xie stood in place, watching Chi Wang’s back until he disappeared into the school entrance before retracting his gaze.
His calm and composed expression showed subtle cracks. He picked up the report again and examined it carefully.
After a long time, Xie’s Adam’s apple bobbed several times, his throat dry. He methodically put away the report and stood on the bustling street for a while before slowly heading home.
Back at the dormitory, Chi Wang informed Luo and Shu of the outcome. “I discussed it with the baby’s father. He’s willing to contribute money and effort. We’re switching to another hospital—his family owns one.”
Luo was shocked, his body jolting. “What? He’s actually a rich second-generation heir?”
Chi Wang said, “Seems like he has money, but that’s not the point. The main thing is that this matter can be resolved.”
He wore a genuinely happy expression as he spoke.
From his bed, Shu poked his head out and asked, “He didn’t think you were scamming him?”
Chi Wang replied, “We’re all top students with strong acceptance abilities. Bam! Just like that, he accepted it quickly.”
Luo: “…”
He exchanged a glance with Shu as if to say, See? I told you he’s from our school. The best school nearby is ours.
Shu: “…”
He returned a look of admiration.
Chi Wang’s mood was bright. “I’m quite lucky; at least he’s generous.”
Luo couldn’t help but retort, “…Get real! If you were lucky, this whole pregnancy thing wouldn’t have happened in the first place!!”
Chi Wang: “…”
The corners of his mouth drooped.
Too real.

[1]: “Silence was tonight’s ‘Cambridge Bridge.'”: A play on words referencing Xu Zhimo’s famous poem “Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again,” which begins with “Quietly I leave, just as I quietly came.” Here, it’s used humorously to emphasize the heavy silence between the characters.
[2]: “Detecting essential elements…”: Internet slang implying the realization of typical tropes, often seen in overbearing CEO novels where the protagonist has a doctor friend.
