Chapter 140: Survival Mission
Song Bochao left for a few minutes and came back with a slight smile.
“The top five in the group get extra gold coins. First place is 600 coins, second 500, third 400… fifth 200, everyone else gets 100.”
“Who’s so amazing they got 600? Is it someone from our class?” Zhang Junyang was envious, though he didn’t say it out loud.
Song Bochao gestured toward a boy sitting ramrod straight against the wall in the first row. “That classmate is Zhao Yuanzhou. According to him, it was luck—he happened to be just a few steps from the bridgehead. But judging by his bearing, he’s probably from a military family.”
Zhao Yuanzhou wasn’t in the same dorm as Mu Lantu and the others. Hearing his name, he turned his head, revealing a handsome, firm, slightly tanned face. Beneath his sword-like brows, his eyes were bright and piercing. His gaze lingered on Mu Lantu for a moment, slightly dazed.
Xu Huazhang’s radar gave a “beep beep,” and he placed Mu Lantu’s hand on his thigh.
Mu Lantu flipped his hand over, interlocking their fingers, his brows lifting.
Xu Huazhang shook his head slightly, indicating it was nothing.
Su Mingxu asked, “Classmate Xu, did your supermarket get new goods? Any props? What kind of props?”
The classroom fell silent.
Xu Huazhang said calmly, “Don’t know, haven’t looked.”
“Why not check now?” Su Mingxu suggested.
The people nearby gave him looks that were hard to describe.
Su Mingxu didn’t understand, but realized he must’ve said something wrong. Embarrassed, he scratched his head.
Mu Lantu changed the subject: “This period is petrology. What kind of instance do you think it’ll be?”
Zhang Junyang muttered gloomily, “Hard to say. Could it be rock-related? That’s too broad, nowhere to start.”
Song Bochao stayed calm. “Whatever it is, I spent the hundred coins I earned from morning exercises. All food and water.” And one dagger.
Zhao Yuanzhou stood, circled halfway around, and sat on the aisle seat beside Mu Lantu.
“Hello. The morning exercise instance was about running. I think the petrology one might involve rockfalls or landslides. I’m Zhao Yuanzhou. Classmate, what’s your name?”
The last line was directed at Mu Lantu.
“Mu Lantu.”
“Nice to meet you.” Zhao Yuanzhou extended a hand.
“Hello.” Mu Lantu extended his left hand—his right was still held by Xu Huazhang.
Only then did Zhao Yuanzhou notice, switched hands, shook, then gave Xu Huazhang a once-over.
Xu Huazhang said evenly to Mu Lantu, “Baby, the first chapter of petrology covers rocks and their types. Rocks are divided into three categories by origin: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks, also called magmatic rocks, form when magma from deep in the earth solidifies… sedimentary rocks are… metamorphic rocks are… In the best-case scenario, this instance might be related to magma, earthquakes, or volcanoes…”
Everyone frowned. Had he misspoken? If magma, earthquakes, and volcanoes counted as the best case…?
Xu Huazhang continued.
“Worst case, the petrology instance has nothing to do with the word ‘petrology’ at all.”
Everyone’s hearts sank. No wonder he equated magma, earthquakes, and volcanoes with the best case. Since the supermarket can’t be used inside the instance, if it really is magma, quakes, or eruptions, at least they could prepare in advance. But if it had no relation whatsoever, then all preparation would be useless.
Song Bochao agreed inwardly. With just one morning exercise instance, the sample size was too small to conclude there was always a link between the class name and the challenge. Forcing that logic might be a trap.
Fan Wenyao entered from the back door. His eyes carried a vicious gleam as he looked at Xu Huazhang, then silently sat down in the last row.
“Big baby, how do you know all this?” Mu Lantu was surprised. He knew Huazhang liked reading, but even this? That was encyclopedic.
The others were struck with secondhand embarrassment, all turning their heads away. These two really were a pair—each calling the other something more nauseating than the last.
Xu Huazhang said lightly, “I wanted to see you earlier. You refused, insisted on waiting for school to start. I was bored at home alone, so I found some courseware online and finished all our freshman textbooks.”
Everyone stared at him, stunned. He hadn’t just read them—more like memorized them! Incredible.
“You two knew each other before?” Zhang Junyang was curious about the dorm’s gay couple.
Xu Huazhang replied, “We’ve known each other for eighteen years.” He wanted to say centuries, but that would sound unbelievable, so he settled for the most fitting number.
Mu Lantu wondered why his big baby was talking so much today.
Su Mingxu squirmed. “I mean, how can you gossip at a time like this? If there really is an earthquake, volcanic eruption, or magma flow, how would we even escape? We can’t!”
The room fell silent. Of course they all knew that—but what good was panicking?
They turned to the clock on the front wall.
08:19.
One minute to class.
The classroom was deathly quiet, the tick of the second hand like a funeral knell.
“Ring ring…”
Gray space.
Mission: Survive 20 days in Min’an Town. Refuse the mission, return to Infinite University—no punishment, no reward. If no choice is made within 30 seconds, it defaults to acceptance.
Success reward: 1 credit, 100 gold coins (base).
Failure penalty: Death.
[Accept][Reject]
The useful info was scarce—no need to think twice. Mu Lantu chose “Accept.”
The next moment, he was in a cold environment, wearing a down jacket and snow boots.
The street bustled with people, everyone carrying loads of items. Nearly every shop doorway had red lanterns hung, festive music playing: Congratulations to you, prosperity and joy…
Mu Lantu’s gaze swept over the goods in their hands: golden oranges, colorful fireworks, bright candies, red couplets… preparations for the New Year?
Then he spotted Xu Huazhang walking toward him, and also saw two familiar boys in the crowd, cautiously observing their surroundings, all dressed for winter.
Xu Huazhang took his hand, leading him into a hidden corner. “My mission says: survive 20 days in Min’an Town. What about yours?”
“Same.” Mu Lantu said. “First, we need to find Min’an Town. This looks like one, but may not be it.”
Xu Huazhang pulled out two things from his pocket. “Check yours too. See if you have a wallet and phone.”
He handed Mu Lantu a wallet and phone.
Inside the wallet: 400 yuan and an ID card.
This country might be a parallel version of Dragon Nation. The characters were Chinese, the language Chinese, but the currency designs were unfamiliar.
The identity was clearly arranged by Infinite University: Xu Huazhang was “Wang Xiaoming,” address: Min’an Town, Leyi Community, Building 1, Unit 2, Room 304, Xiaoyao City, Infinite Province.
“Hello, Wang Xiaoming. Goodbye, Wang Xiaoming.” Mu Lantu couldn’t stop laughing. He pulled out his own wallet: 400 yuan and an ID card.
Before he could read it, Xu Huazhang plucked it away.
“Hello, Li Xiaohua.” He returned it with a smile. (TN: Li Xiaohua; Very girly name)
Mu Lantu checked the name—it really was Li Xiaohua. Awkward.
But Xu Huazhang kindly didn’t tease him further. “Let’s find Min’an Town first. Baby, how should we look?”
“Wang Xiaoming, you see? No matter how nice your name sounds, you still rely on me.” Mu Lantu puffed up. “Follow me!”
A passerby glanced at them speechlessly. Wang Xiaoming sounds nice? You two must have seriously warped taste.
To find Min’an Town, they just needed to act like out-of-towners and ask.
Mu Lantu hoped this place was Min’an Town—it would save them cab fare.
Knowing he had the advantage of good looks, he picked a shop owner lady who wasn’t busy.
She looked around forty, behind the counter scrolling her phone.
“Boss, sorry to bother you. Could you tell me the way to Min’an Town? How far is it?”
She looked up, annoyed at being interrupted, but seeing two handsome boys speaking perfect Mandarin—obviously outsiders—her demeanor instantly turned warm.
“Min’an Town, eh? It’s a bit far. Go straight down this street to the end—that’s Ruyi Road. Don’t cross, just turn right, about 200 meters is the bus stop. Bus 44 runs directly from Guotai Town to Min’an. Or you could flag a cab here, but it’ll be pricey—at least fifty yuan.”
Mu Lantu clasped his hands with a smile. “Thank you, boss. Let us wish you a Happy New Year in advance. May you and your family be united and harmonious, blessed with good fortune, overflowing with wealth, peace, and joy!”
Xu Huazhang echoed in sync: “May you and your family have smooth sailing, long life and health, abundant prosperity, five blessings at your door, and stars shining bright.”
Mu Lantu: “…” His big baby seemed to have a bit of OCD—if he said five idioms, big baby had to say five too.
“Oh my! You two boys are sweet talkers!” Flushed with joy, the lady covered her face with both hands, spun in place once, then said, “Wait here! Don’t go!”
She hurried into the back room.
Finding Min’an Town wasn’t urgent, so Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang waited.
The lady quickly came out, and to their surprise, stuffed each of them with a bright red New Year’s envelope!
Mu Lantu laughed in surprise, declining politely. “Boss, you’re too kind, we can’t accept this.”
But she waved firmly, her tone domineering: “Take it! Auntie’s not short of money! Just for those auspicious words you said, this is worth it!”
