Chapter 136: Infinite University
Dongkai University was one of the top universities in the country. The campus was huge; Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang walked under the blazing sun for quite a while before finally finding Building No. 5, where they collected their dorm room key from the dorm matron with their admission slip.
They took the elevator to the sixth floor. Standing in the hallway, Mu Lantu faintly felt something was off.
Xu Huazhang glanced around, doubt flashing across his deep eyes, and stopped in front of Room 608.
The door wasn’t fully closed.
Xu Huazhang knocked. A weak, listless “Come in” came from inside.
He and Mu Lantu exchanged a look, then pushed the door open.
The scene inside made them both lower their raised feet at the same time. Xu Huazhang even pulled Mu Lantu back a few steps.
Dongkai University was a nationally supported school and had been rebuilt just ten years ago. Even if not every dorm was four-person, an eight-person room would still be reasonable. But here—there were twenty lofted bunks with desks underneath!
Mu Lantu suddenly realized what had felt off earlier in the hallway: the spacing between dorm doors was too wide. That alone meant each dormitory room had to be unusually large.
Inside this one, six people were already there. They all sat slumped in chairs as if hit by a heavy blow, listlessly watching the two newcomers with faintly mocking expressions.
One expressionless student said, “Come in. It’s already too late.”
The words made no sense.
Still, Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang didn’t step in.
A prank? Probably not.
Xu Huazhang glanced again at the admission slip in his hand—and his pupils shrank. The white paper had somehow turned black!
Infinite University?
The content on the slip had changed!
The back still had a campus map, but the front now read:
“Dear Student Xu Huazhang, Infinite University welcomes you! We hope you enjoy a wonderful college life here.”
It was signed with a terrifying skull.
Mu Lantu checked his own admission slip—same thing.
He was dumbfounded.
[Little Five, what’s going on?]
005 gasped: [Host, from the looks of it, you and Brother Xu Huazhang seem to have stumbled into a very strange world!]
“Let’s leave first,” Mu Lantu said.
Xu Huazhang nodded.
They turned to go.
“You can’t leave! You think we didn’t try?” one roommate scoffed.
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang still entered the elevator, walked out of Building No. 5 without trouble—only to find the lively crowds gone. Outside were only a few scattered figures wandering in panic, unsure where to go.
This place seemed to exist in a different dimension from the real Dongkai University!
Mu Lantu pulled out his phone. “No signal.”
“Mm.”
As expected.
Xu Huazhang studied the map and led Mu Lantu forward.
They circled the entire Infinite University but couldn’t find a campus gate. When they tossed a pebble over the perimeter wall, it vanished into thin air.
[Little Five, can you break this place?]
005’s tone was grave: [Not for now, Host. I have no clue yet. But don’t worry, I’ll keep trying!]
[Okay.]
Having traversed several worlds, Mu Lantu’s composure was far beyond ordinary people.
He slipped his hand into his backpack, tested pulling items out of his system space. Success. He stored them back again—also fine.
Relieved, he thought: whatever this place was, at least he and Huazhang wouldn’t lack food or water.
“Baby, let’s head back.”
“Mm.”
They returned to Room 608. Without assigned name tags on the bunks, they casually picked two neighboring ones. Each bed was equipped with mattress, quilt, pillow, sheets, and covers—neatly stacked, all identical, their pitch-black color unsettling.
The admission letters had mentioned the school would provide bedding free of charge. Most students wouldn’t bother bringing their own, maybe just a spare set for washing, or else buy new on arrival.
But Infinite University had no supermarket. These issued sets were all they had.
“Told you it’s useless to try leaving, but you wouldn’t believe it.” The same roommate spoke again, this time bursting into tears.
Others looked equally shaken.
One curled up in fear, voice trembling: “I-I like reading infinite flow novels… maybe we—we really got dragged into an infinite horror world! We—we could all die here!”
Young people rarely didn’t read web novels. Most here had already guessed as much, hence their terror.
Seeing Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang calmly making their beds, a boy with ashen-gray hair asked in surprise: “You two… aren’t you scared?”
“Would fear help? Since we’re here, we might as well adapt,” Mu Lantu said kindly. “If you’re afraid, you can go out and explore the environment.”
No one moved.
Mu Lantu didn’t press.
Xu Huazhang opened his gray suitcase, pulled out a huge bag of snacks, and placed them in Mu Lantu’s locker.
“I brought you good stuff too.” Mu Lantu opened his own suitcase—besides lollipops of every flavor for Xu Huazhang, he had also packed snacks for their roommates.
But seeing the pile, his brows furrowed. If this really was an infinite world, maybe it wasn’t entirely bad—perhaps he could get Xu Huazhang a portable space item, even a cubic meter would help.
In the last world, he had drawn amazing items from his “Labor Glory List” rewards—even a bottle of six rare Rejuvenation Pills from the cultivation realm, still sitting in his system space. But he’d never drawn a spatial item, his biggest regret.
Xu Huazhang took out a change of clothes. “Baby, you first, or me first?”
The dorm had its own bathroom and shower—quite a considerate setup for Infinite University.
At the word “baby,” their roommates glanced over again. Some didn’t care, some turned away in disgust.
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang ignored them.
“You first.”
Both showered. By 11:30, they were done.
“Go eat?” Mu Lantu asked, towel-drying his hair.
Xu Huazhang handed him a baseball cap. “Mm.”
“Not afraid of being poisoned?” someone muttered maliciously.
Mu Lantu smiled faintly. “Those afraid of death die first.”
A burly student leapt up. “You—!”
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang stood calmly, watching him coldly, identical indifferent expressions.
The boy clenched his teeth, then threw himself back on his bed, shaking it violently.
“Can I come with you?” the gray-haired boy asked timidly.
Mu Lantu, wanting to gather more intel, nodded. “Of course.”
The three left together.
Through conversation, Mu Lantu learned the boy’s name was Li Kaige, nineteen, a local.
“You’re local. Haven’t you ever heard anything strange about Dongkai University?” Mu Lantu asked.
Li Kaige gave a wry smile. “Never! Just a normal university. Even ghost stories are rare. I’ve visited many times, even last week, and nothing happened.”
Mu Lantu asked if he had explored Infinite University’s campus before.
Li Kaige shook his head. “Wanted to, but didn’t dare. Honestly, you two look like big shots—that’s the only reason I dared to tag along.”
He hesitated, then added: “So many of us ended up here… the outside world can’t reach us, right? Won’t they send people to investigate?”
“How do you know they can’t reach us?” Mu Lantu countered.
Li Kaige shivered. “W-what do you mean?”
Mu Lantu smiled. “Just saying.”
“Bro, don’t scare me like that! Nearly pissed myself!” Li Kaige wailed.
Mu Lantu muttered, “Huazhang, I wonder if this only happened at Dongkai, or at other universities too.”
“Take it one step at a time.” Xu Huazhang’s adventurous nature outweighed fear. Coming from a feudal-era world, this infinite space was a massive shock to him.
But most of all, with Mu Lantu beside him, nothing else mattered. All he needed was to protect the two of them.
Talking, the three reached the cafeteria.
The building loomed black, heavy and oppressive, repelling anyone from entering.
Through glass doors and windows, they saw the inside resembled a normal university canteen—except the only colors were black and white.
There were many serving counters and ample seating. Fewer than twenty people ate there now, both male and female.
Most looked tense, scanning their surroundings as they ate. A few, oddly, were laughing and chatting loudly in excitement, baffling to watch.
“Is this food even edible? What if it’s poisoned?” Li Kaige whispered nervously, hiding behind Mu Lantu.
Xu Huazhang pulled Mu Lantu to his other side and pushed open the door.
The students inside all turned to look.
Glancing over the counters, Mu Lantu was surprised.
The food was plentiful—braised pork, sweet-and-sour fish, scrambled eggs with tomato, fried chicken… Rice, steamed buns, pancakes, cold noodles… Even drinks. No different from a real college canteen.
Next to each counter was a QR code for payment.
Mu Lantu frowned. Wasn’t there no network? Could the codes still work?
“Master, excuse me—do you know what this place really is?” Mu “Social Butterfly” Lantu asked.
The cafeteria worker blinked at him, chuckled. “Student, what’s wrong with you? Isn’t this Dongkai University? Strange—so many people asking me weird questions today.”
The three froze.
Mu Lantu didn’t ask further.
“Baby, what do you want to eat?” Xu Huazhang asked.
Li Kaige cut in, panicked: “Classmate Mu, Classmate Xu—are we really eating here?”
Xu Huazhang didn’t answer.
Mu Lantu said, “Huazhang and I will. Master, I’ll have cold beef, braised fish, teriyaki chicken steak, chilled amaranth, and rice.”
