Outside came the sound of dogs barking, followed by a noisy commotion of voices, drawing closer and closer.

“Huazhang, have you guessed it too?” Mu Lantu asked him with his eyes.

Xu Huazhang gave Li Shengli a cold glance and nodded slightly. He had seen the best of humanity and also its darkest side—what the Li’s were capable of was no surprise.

“Shengli?” The brigade leader called again.

Li Shengli, guarding against Su Qianqian and Hu Ying, forced himself to stay calm as he propped Du Xiujuan up and pinched her philtrum.
“Brigade leader, nothing, nothing! The children were just playing around.”

Sun Changsheng eyed the tightly shut gate, uneasy after recalling the people he’d seen earlier that day.

Li Shengli’s voice carried impatience. Sun Changsheng pursed his lips, displeased.

Du Xiujuan came to, looking around in confusion.
