Farming to Cultivate Immortality – CH16

Ten Things Lover Must Do

Chapter 16 – Ten Things Lover Must Do

Under the flickering candlelight, Gu Wenzhu’s brow furrowed in concentration, his lips pressed tightly together, eyes focused on the sleeve in his hand. With steady hands, he threaded the needle and began sewing.

“Wow…” Xia Yi sat by his side, propping his chin in his hands, watching quietly.

Gu Wenzhu’s side profile was sharply defined, with his tall nose casting a shadow on his face in the candlelight, making him look incredibly handsome.

They say men are most attractive when they’re serious about their work, and Xia Yi couldn’t agree more, completely captivated by his man’s good looks.

“Scissors,” Gu Wenzhu said, extending his hand without looking up.

Xia Yi quickly handed him the scissors from the basket.

“Thread,” Gu Wenzhu commanded, still focused on the sleeve.

Xia Yi quickly threaded another needle and handed it to Gu Wenzhu, using a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his forehead. Gu Wenzhu slightly tilted his head, but his eyes remained fixed on the needlework in his hands.

“Just two more stitches and we’re done,” Gu Wenzhu said, his voice calm and serious. “The stitching has been very successful.”

Xia Yi: …Why does this feel like surgery?

With the final stitch, Gu Wenzhu snipped off the excess thread and let out a long breath of relief. “It’s done! Try it on,” he said, shaking out the clothes and handing them to Xia Yi.

When Xia Yi took the garment, he saw that the stitches were tight and evenly spaced. Even though Gu Wenzhu had claimed never to have sewn before, his first attempt was impressively neat.

“Brother Zhu, you’re amazing, really impressive! I admire you so much,” Xia Yi praised him generously, making Gu Wenzhu blush slightly.

Since the outer garment was loose-fitting, Xia Yi quickly slipped it on and tied it up, then proudly twirled a few times in front of Gu Wenzhu.

“Does it look good?” Xia Yi asked, even though he could already see the admiration in Gu Wenzhu’s eyes.

“It looks great,” Gu Wenzhu nodded repeatedly.

Xia Yi spun around a couple more times, shaking his hands and striking a pose, but soon he started feeling that something wasn’t quite right. Under one of his armpits, something seemed off, and the shoulder area felt tight.

He took the garment off to inspect it and finally figured out the problem. “Brother Zhu, you sewed the sleeve on upside down. The part that should be on the shoulder is under the armpit, and the armpit part is sewn to the shoulder.”

Gu Wenzhu hurried over to check, and the two stared at each other in disbelief. “We’ll have to undo it and sew it again.”

“Scissors,” Gu Wenzhu said seriously, holding out his hand. Xia Yi quickly handed them over.

“Thread the needle,” Xia Yi promptly did so.

“Just two more stitches.”

This time, the sleeves were sewn on correctly, and the armpits and shoulders fit perfectly. Xia Yi waved his arms around, very satisfied, while Gu Wenzhu tugged and inspected the seams to make sure nothing was out of place.

Gradually, Xia Yi began to feel that something still seemed a bit off. Why did it feel a little weird when he wore it?

Gu Wenzhu, stroking his chin thoughtfully, suddenly realized, “The sleeves are different lengths.”

“When I undid the stitching earlier, I saw the needle holes on one sleeve, so I sewed it in a bit further,” Gu Wenzhu admitted, full of regret.

“What do we do now?” Xia Yi looked at Gu Wenzhu with wide eyes, wearing the jacket with one sleeve shorter than the other. “Undo it again? I don’t want to keep undoing it—we just end up making more mistakes. Let’s find some fabric and add a piece to the bottom.”

“Alright, let’s do that,” Gu Wenzhu agreed, rummaging through the basket and finding a matching scrap of fabric. He snipped a piece off and began sewing the extension onto the sleeve.

“Scissors.”

“Thread the needle.”

“Just two more stitches.”

Finally, they finished. This time, when Xia Yi put on the jacket, everything fit perfectly. It was just a bit longer, reaching below his calves, and the added sleeve piece was a different color. But both of them agreed that this was just a minor flaw and not a big deal.

With Xia Yi’s jacket done, they moved on to Gu Wenzhu’s.

Xia Yi held up the unfinished sleeve, comparing it to the laid-out jacket on the table. Suddenly, he gasped. “Brother Zhu, did you cut the fabric for my sleeve from this one?”

Looking at the sleeve that was now missing a piece, Gu Wenzhu felt a sharp pang in his chest.

“Let’s just cut a piece from the bottom of my jacket to fix your sleeve. It was a bit too long anyway,” Xia Yi suggested.

So, they cut another piece from the hem of Xia Yi’s jacket and sewed it onto Gu Wenzhu’s sleeve.

By the time both jackets were finished, Gu Wenzhu felt like he had plowed three acres of land and was utterly exhausted.

After they both changed into their new outfits, they stood and admired each other, laughing.

Gu Wenzhu wore a blue outfit, looking tall and handsome, with dark purple trim at the cuffs. Xia Yi’s outfit was all dark purple, with blue at the sleeves.

Wow, they were wearing matching outfits.

Blue with a hint of purple, purple with a touch of blue—each a part of the other.

The next morning, they both put on their new clothes, had breakfast, and headed out together to check on the old house with the collapsed wall. If they could fix the wall, it could serve as a storage shed for farming tools they didn’t use often.

As they walked around the house inspecting it, villagers began to gather, carrying bowls of food and watching as they ate.

“Little Yi, new clothes? You look great,” one villager commented.

“Little Yi, what’s up with your sleeves? They’re different colors,” Li Zhu asked as he squatted nearby, eating.

Neither Xia Yi nor Gu Wenzhu wanted to explain the real reason, so they awkwardly replied, “Not sure, must’ve torn somewhere, so we patched it.”

The others nodded knowingly, but Uncle Wang, deep in thought, gazed into the distance and finally let out a cold laugh. “Do you really believe it just tore somewhere?”

Both Xia Yi and Gu Wenzhu’s hearts skipped a beat.

“It must’ve been those three thieves coming back for revenge, ripping it apart,” Uncle Wang gritted his teeth. “If I catch them again, they won’t get away.”

In his past life, Xia Yi had never been in a real relationship and had always been disdainful of couples showing affection. Whenever he saw people lighting candles for a proposal, he thought it was tacky! Proposing with a ring? Ugh!

“179, I’ve finally found love. I’m going to give Brother Zhu a ring, and I’m going to spell out a heart with candles!” Xia Yi daydreamed happily. “I’m going to do every couple thing there is.”

With that, he grabbed a little notebook from the house and checked off “wear matching outfits.”

“Have a candlelight dinner together!” Every day is a candlelight dinner, check, check.

“Travel the world together!” Well, last time he took me fishing, we climbed a mountain and crossed a river, check.

“Watch the sunrise and sunset together!” We work the fields and return home together every day, check.

“Saving money together! All of our money is in that small wooden box, check.

Cooking delicious food together! I always keep him company when he’s cooking, check.

Raising a pet together! Kirin is over there chewing on a shoe, check.

The only thing left is to make a heart with candles, since watching a movie together isn’t really an option,” Xia Yi thought deeply as he closed the little notebook.

“Where should I set it up? Not outside the village, it’s too windy at night, and the wind will blow out the candles. Can’t do it inside the village either, the villagers would surround us in no time. The yard? No, no, Wen Zhu will be home, and if he sees me setting up candles, he’ll probably come help, and then it won’t be a surprise anymore.”

“You could set it up in the old house,” 179 suggested.

“That’s right, I can do it in the old house! There’s no wind, and no one will see. I could just make up some excuse to leave for a bit, and Wen Zhu won’t suspect a thing.”

“179, for once you’ve come up with a good idea. Maybe you’re not completely useless after all,” Xia Yi praised the system, unable to hold back a compliment.

He jumped into action and immediately went to Old Zhang’s house in the village to buy candles. Old Zhang had a horse cart and often went to the county, so he had set up a small shop at home selling odds and ends like needles and thread.

Seeing Xia Yi buy up all the candles, Old Zhang was a bit surprised.

“Wen Zhu is learning to sew, but the candlelight is too dim, and I don’t want him to hurt his eyes, so I’m getting extra,” Xia Yi said cleverly.

After dinner, the sky was completely dark. Xia Yi, still chewing the last bite of food, pushed his bowl aside and mumbled to Wen Zhu, “I’m going over to Liu Qing’s for a bit, but I’ll be back soon. Don’t go anywhere, okay?”

Just as he opened the door to leave, he turned around again, “Don’t go anywhere! Wait for me, I’ll be back soon.”

In the old house, Xia Yi carefully arranged the candles into the shape of a heart, his heart full of anticipation.

“179, do you think Wen Zhu will be moved when he sees this? I think this idea is just so romantic…”

“But when I suggested these ’10 Things Couples Must Do,’ didn’t you say it was too cheesy?”

“It’s cheesy when others do it, but when I do it, it’s romantic. Forget it, you don’t understand what creating a romantic atmosphere means.”

The candles were slowly arranged into a heart shape on the ground, and Xia Yi carefully lit each one. The old house was bathed in a soft glow, making the whole room feel warm and intimate.

“Alright, time to get WenZhu!” With a snap of his fingers, Xia Yi set off to find him.

Wen Zhu was in the yard, filling Kirin’s food bowl. Kirin was munching away happily, making contented noises. Xia Yi burst through the gate and walked in.

“You’re back? There are some persimmons on the table that Da Zhu just brought over. Go ahead and eat them,” Wen Zhu said as he quickly set down the food bowl and walked toward Xia Yi.

Xia Yi didn’t say a word, just stood there with shining eyes and a smile on his lips.

“What is it?” Wen Zhu asked, his voice softening as he smiled back at Xia Yi.

“I want to show you something—a surprise I made for you,” Xia Yi said, suddenly feeling a bit shy under Wen Zhu’s gentle gaze.

“What kind of surprise?” Wen Zhu’s voice grew even softer, like silk brushing against the ear.

“Come on, you’ll see when we get there,” Xia Yi said excitedly, then turned to leave, with Wen Zhu quickly following behind.

Just as they stepped out of the yard, the sound of a gong rang out from the village, followed by Uncle Wang’s heart-wrenching shout, “Fire! There’s a fire! The house is burning!”
