The Bugle Call to Rescue Has Sounded

Chapter 66: The Bugle Call to Rescue Has Sounded

With his move, the pressure on everyone instantly lessened a lot.

After killing most of the zombies, Li Zhuang roughly glanced at the directory and shouted, “Protect Lu Weiyi to the pharmacy!”

The entire lobby was less than fifty meters. Lu Weiyi actually really wanted to say that even if he didn’t move, he could store all the things in the pharmacy into his space. But considering that he had always collected by touching, and he didn’t want to reveal the difference between his space and others’ spaces, he could only hold his watermelon knife and follow the others towards the pharmacy, while also using his mental power to search for crystal cores. Unfortunately, none of the dozens of zombies had a single core.

“I think, according to that disgusting bastard Li Ji, the weapons are most likely stored in the morgue,” Xu Sa glanced at the directory on the wall and said to Li Zhuang.

“I think so too,” Li Zhuang kicked away a zombie while swinging his triangular knife, directly chopping down two zombies. “So we must completely clear out all the zombies on the first floor.”

“Damn it,” Ning Yuan was very resistant to the zombies dripping mucus and rotting in chunks in front of him. He swung the hammer in his hand, and one swing could knock down a group, but his stamina was also draining very quickly. Seeing that there were finally only five or six left in front of him, he could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

The few people quickly dealt with the remaining zombies and each checked the corridor to see if there were any stragglers. Li Zhuang led Lu Weiyi, who had collected things and returned to the group, towards the stairwell, while shouting, “We’ll go downstairs to get things, the rest of you be on guard.”

There were obviously zombies in the stairwell, “bang, bang” banging on the door. Lu Weiyi followed Li Zhuang to the stairwell and simultaneously sent the little green branch in.

“Stay away a bit, it sounds like there are a lot of zombies,” Li Zhuang in front said, reaching out to push open the stairwell door when Lu Weiyi shouted, “Don’t move!”

Lu Weiyi broke out in a cold sweat, mentally cursing Li Ji’s ancestors. He directed the little green branch to directly store the supplies and weapons in the basement, and then retracted the little green branch, saying, “Forget it, let’s go, let’s go.”

“So fast?” The two returned to the lobby, and Lin Yimu asked in surprise.

“Forget it, let’s go quickly,” Lu Weiyi’s face was extremely pale. Saying that, he walked out first.

As soon as they left the hospital, Li Zhuang quickly contacted the other three cars, and they all drove towards the outskirts of the city at the same time. Only then did Li Zhuang ask, “Were there many zombies inside?”

“Mmm,” Lu Weiyi didn’t know how to describe the scene he had sensed. The door to the first floor and the door to the basement were both closed, and they were filled with densely packed zombies. Even the basement was full of small children.

They were clearly deliberately locked inside to become zombies. When Lu Weiyi thought that the things inside were left by Li Ji, he could guess whose handiwork this was. No wonder so many zombies before didn’t have a single crystal core, because there were no initial zombies inside; they were all formed later.

In an instant, he felt that he had been too merciful before. These people who didn’t even have the most basic bottom line really didn’t deserve any leniency.

Lu Weiyi had experienced two apocalypses and had never seen such disgusting and unscrupulous things. He could understand ignoring others, being selfish, and even looking out for oneself in the apocalypse, but to attack a group of defenseless children…

“Ugh…” Lu Weiyi recalled that scene and immediately felt nauseous. The car suddenly went over a steep slope and bumped, making it even harder to hold back. He instantly slammed on the brakes, jumped out, and leaned against the car body, vomiting violently.

Lin Yimu quickly got out of the car to prevent zombies from approaching him, and Li Zhuang jumped from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat.

After vomiting, he felt a bit better. Lu Weiyi got into the passenger seat, took the water Lin Yimu handed him and took two sips, closing his eyes to rest.

“What exactly was inside?” Xu Sa looked at Lu Weiyi’s pale face and asked Li Zhuang.

Li Zhuang started the car and said, “I didn’t see. But I just realized that the people in the hospital couldn’t have been locked inside after turning into zombies. Even if they were really locked in, there should at least be doctors and nurses in white coats inside, but they were all ordinary people. They must have been deliberately locked in there by someone. As for who? Whoever went in is the only possibility.”

“This… this is too…” Liu Rui was so shocked he couldn’t find the words, or perhaps his stuttering prevented him from expressing his astonishment.

“Inside… were all children,” Lu Weiyi said softly, “packed tightly.”

“That beast!” Xu Sa’s handsome face was full of gloom, his hand gripping the knife so tightly that his knuckles cracked. “We must kill him next time we see him.”

The atmosphere was somber throughout the journey until the cars regrouped and set off again. For a long time, no one broke the silence.

To save gasoline, they reorganized into three cars. With the walkie-talkies, communication became much easier. Combining Lin Yimu and Ning Yuan’s analysis with the speed of the oil tanker, they identified two places as the most likely spots for the others to stop and rest.

The group suppressed their anger. Along the way, they directly rammed into any zombies they encountered. They drove bumpily until a little after eight in the evening and finally reached the first rest stop. Unfortunately, there was no sign of anyone stopping there. Li Zhuang rarely asked someone to take some supplies and inquire at a small safe area formed in the town if they had seen them pass by.

A group of people driving an oil tanker was too conspicuous. After a little inquiry, they immediately got the information. They had passed by not long ago, around three or four in the afternoon.

Lin Yimu estimated the time and felt they should be at the next rest stop. It was clear they were trying to travel overnight, especially after hearing about the cruelty of Li Ji’s group in the afternoon. He was very worried about Zhuang Mingxu. “Sorry to trouble everyone. Let’s eat something in the car. After we find Mingxu, I’ll have the Young Master treat everyone to a good meal.”

“Don’t worry, we won’t be polite when the time comes,” Li Zhuang was the first to state. “Little friend, just wait for the big expense.”

“Then we’d better think carefully about what to eat,” Gu Qingyue said with a smile.

“Steamed lamb, steamed bear’s paw, steamed deer tail; roasted duck, roasted young chicken, roasted goose; braised salty duck…” Xu Sa listed a series of dishes, feeling his own saliva welling up. He sighed. “The more I talk, the more I crave it.”

“With that menu, you can probably only dream about it,” Xiong Jie joked with Xu Sa.

“Then I’d better think of something realistic,” Xu Sa grumbled to Lu Weiyi dejectedly, “Bring some food.”

Lu Weiyi was also thinking of just continuing to drive and eating something casually in the car, but he felt a bit bad for troubling others. Hearing Xu Sa’s words, he took out a dozen hamburgers, fries, roasted wings, spicy wings, and a dozen cups of iced cola.

Before the apocalypse, most people might not have liked fast food very much, but after the apocalypse, these things were luxuries, and eating them was more about reminiscing.

Xu Sa quickly snatched one, opened it, and took a big bite, questioning Lu Weiyi with a muffled voice, “Didn’t you say you didn’t store supplies?”

Lu Weiyi nodded. “But I definitely have my own food, right?”

The things stored in the space still had their temperature. When taken out now, they were like they had just been made. The fries were crispy, the chicken wings were still hot, and the cola felt ice-cold.

The few people quickly each took a portion, but being grown men, they definitely wouldn’t be full. Lu Weiyi took out another dozen servings of chicken leg rice.

Antonio took two hamburgers and gave all the hamburgers and fries to Dean. Seeing Dean take a bite and smile contentedly, he immediately said to Lu Weiyi, “How much of this do you still have? Can you leave it all for me? I’ll trade you supplies.”

“Are you stupid? Once we get to the base, there are people everywhere. As long as you have supplies, finding someone who can cook Western food is a matter of minutes. Why exchange everything for hamburgers here?” Xu Sa nudged Antonio, not forgetting to quickly stuff a hamburger into his mouth.

That was true. Antonio was only focused on watching Dean eat happily and had temporarily forgotten about this. However, he still emphasized to Lu Weiyi, “Leave some for me, remember that.”

Lu Weiyi nodded, and the group happily divided the food and got into their respective cars.

Driving at night, the speed was significantly slower than before. The people in the cars chatted and laughed to keep themselves awake, occasionally telling jokes over the walkie-talkies. Lu Weiyi sat in the back seat to recover his mental power and also calmed his somewhat agitated mood.

In his memory, Zhuang Mingxu was dead.

So before seeing him again, Lu Weiyi had always been worried. Even after seeing many people who had already died, he still felt uneasy, especially after hearing that Zhuang Mingxu hadn’t awakened an ability. He was always worried that this was a dream. And now, the final moment to dispel this worry had finally arrived.

At two in the morning, the group finally discovered the others’ resting place, but they couldn’t help but curse inwardly.

The place the others had chosen wasn’t near any village; it was a dilapidated two-story building by the roadside. It didn’t look like it had been inhabited even before the apocalypse. But the advantage was that the surroundings were flat, with no places to hide. It was impossible to park and approach without alerting anyone.

“They all have guns,” Li Zhuang said, driving with one hand and holding binoculars with the other. “We can’t approach directly. Let’s drive past first.”

As Li Zhuang spoke, he took the lead and drove the car forward. Fortunately, they turned a corner not far away. After turning and confirming they wouldn’t be discovered, Li Zhuang stopped the car. After the other two cars arrived, Li Zhuang said, “Two patrolling on the roof, saw one on the second floor, but there are lights on in the back, so there’s probably one there too. Two in the yard, all with guns. There’s a light on in each of the four directions, almost no blind spots.”

“I can sneak in,” Lin Yimu said first.

“I can too,” Ning Yuan also stepped forward.

Both of them were from the military’s special operations team, and infiltration and assassination were easy for them.

“Count me in,” Antonio said.

Li Zhuang shook his head and said, “Besides the patrols, there are twelve ability users. Their abilities can enhance various physical qualities. It’s very difficult for the three of you against twelve, and they also have a hostage in their hands.”

Lu Weiyi did want to sneak over himself, but the distance was so far that even if he used mental power to cover himself, he might not be able to make it. Moreover, under mental power coverage, others just wouldn’t focus on him, but if he made a sound, that would be a different story. Dealing with those who were highly vigilant or those who were trained soldiers, even the sound of an extra person breathing was enough to attract their attention.

The road was full of potholes. Even in broad daylight, Lu Weiyi couldn’t guarantee he could walk past silently, let alone at night. He said a bit anxiously, “Then what do we do? We can’t just let them get away.”

“Did you take any timed bombs from the weapons you collected?” Li Zhuang asked.

Lu Weiyi had almost been kidnapped by Zhuang Mingxu’s business rivals. After that, Zhuang Mingxu had focused on teaching him some self-defense techniques and marksmanship, but only limited to a few common handguns. He didn’t know much about other firearms. He directly threw out all the weapons he had collected from Li Ji’s two locations, piling them up in a range of over ten meters in front of him.

“Did he raid an armory?” Antonio said softly, and he and Li Zhuang simultaneously approached and opened the boxes. Inside, apart from a few sniper rifles, there were mostly rifles and handguns. Although there were no timed bombs or the like, there were four whole boxes of explosives. Even Li Zhuang couldn’t help but sigh, with so many things in hand, it was no wonder Li Ji had such grand ambitions.
