Chapter 61: A Messenger Knocks on the Door
As soon as the words came out, the other people immediately looked over, their expressions varying from surprise to joy.
“Young Master, you… can…” Lin Yimu asked first.
Lu Weiyi knew what he wanted to ask and shook his head, replying directly, “Cannot.”
“Then you?”
“He’s an ability user,” Lu Weiyi replied, raising an eyebrow at Li Zhuang.
Li Zhuang lowered his head and chuckled for a while, then clasped his hands in a bow and bent towards Lu Weiyi. “Please, Young Master, save me.”
Although Lu Weiyi held back his laughter, the sparkle in his eyes showed he was very pleased, like a smug cat. He cleared his throat and said reluctantly, “Since you’re begging me, then… alright. Wait there.”
Saying that, Lu Weiyi turned and went back into the room. The others, worried it was some kind of secret formula, didn’t dare follow him in. After a moment, Lu Weiyi came out with half a bottle of black liquid, not knowing what it contained, and handed it to Li Zhuang.
“You… are you sure?” Li Zhuang was somewhat suspicious of the dark half-bottle.
“If you don’t trust me, give it back,” Lu Weiyi said impatiently, reaching out to snatch it.
“Trust you, trust you,” Li Zhuang said, tilting his head back and gulping it down directly. His furrowed brows clearly showed it wasn’t very delicious.
“What does it taste like?” Antonio asked softly.
“You try it?” Li Zhuang held the empty bottle, unable to describe the taste in his mouth. It wasn’t terribly bad, but just strangely indescribable.
Antonio shook his head and took the water Dean handed him, giving it to Li Zhuang.
Li Zhuang took a few more sips to rinse his mouth and asked Lu Weiyi, “Is that it?”
Lu Weiyi nodded. “It will probably hurt for a while longer.”
Zombie energy entering an ability user’s body was the same as a normal person getting infected, except that the ability user’s body would slow down the spread. Additionally, an ability user’s body’s adaptability would prevent infection from zombie energy weaker than their own body’s strength, just like how a late-stage A-level ability user wouldn’t be infected by a B-level zombie but would be infected by an S-level zombie. However, it would still be uncomfortable. The degree of discomfort and the time it appeared would depend on the ability user’s condition.
Some ability users could directly manipulate their own abilities to resist the zombie energy, directly expelling it. This process was similar to a martial arts master in a TV show using their internal energy to detoxify. Similarly, if they used their abilities after being bitten, it would accelerate the spread of the zombie energy and hasten the onset of discomfort until the ability user’s internal energy automatically expelled the zombie energy.
“Why don’t we eat first? Even if we die, we shouldn’t be hungry ghosts,” Li Zhuang suggested, not noticing any discomfort in his body.
Waiting around wasn’t going to solve anything, so the others nodded in agreement. Xi Shi immediately went back to the stove to heat up the food. The kitchenware was what he had just used, and the traces of being moved were obvious at a glance.
“What’s wrong?” Xiong Jie asked as he helped stoke the fire.
Xi Shi whispered his discovery. The few people who had come in earlier were all avoiding the zombie cat, their minds focused on the outside, so they couldn’t have come to move the seasonings. The only one left… was Lu Weiyi who had come in…
Xiong Jie also thought of it, but seeing that Li Zhuang showed no signs of turning into a zombie, he shook his head at Xi Shi, signaling him to pretend he didn’t know.
Xi Shi nodded and quickly heated up a few dishes. Along with the newly made buns, he arranged a dozen or so plates and bowls.
Li Zhuang acted nonchalant, and the others didn’t feel it was appropriate to keep focusing on him. The meal was quite lively until they were almost finished, when Li Zhuang’s expression slightly changed.
Sitting next to him were Antonio and Lin Yimu. The two of them had been paying attention to him the whole time and immediately asked what was wrong.
“A little… pain,” Li Zhuang said. Apart from his slightly pale face, he showed no other discomfort. Lu Weiyi took a clean knife and made a few cuts on the area of his arm where he had been scratched. Black blood immediately flowed out.
The few people eating stopped and watched this scene in silence.
It wasn’t until the black blood from the wound slowly lightened, gradually turning bright red, that the others breathed a sigh of relief.
“Little friend, so I’m probably not going to…”
“Bang… screech…” The sound of a car suddenly braking was followed by “bang, bang, bang” of knocking on the door.
Just the force of the knocking didn’t sound like friendly intentions.
Antonio and Lin Yimu got up quickly, grabbed their weapons, stood at the front, and asked, “Who is it?”
“One… person,” Lu Weiyi said, a little unsure about the result of his mental probe. Traveling this late meant either the person was highly skilled and daring, or they had a large group and weren’t afraid.
Antonio had always felt that Lu Weiyi was hiding something, so he never doubted his words. Lin Yimu had taken care of Lu Weiyi for many years and naturally wouldn’t question him either. The two of them exchanged a look and cautiously walked towards the door.
They heard a hoarse voice from outside, “Excuse me… did anyone come this way from Shangyang Lake about an hour ago?”
Their group had arrived at Shangyang Lake two hours ago and had been here for about an hour. They hadn’t seen anyone cross the river ahead, and the group behind would probably take a while to leave. So he must be talking about their group.
“Yes,” Lin Yimu replied, carefully opening the door a crack. Antonio stood behind him, ensuring the two of them could subdue the person outside at any moment. “Are you looking for someone?”
The person at the door was carrying a hammer, his face dirty, only his eyes shining brightly. The moment he saw Lin Yimu, he immediately became agitated. The hammer in his hand moved, instantly triggering Antonio’s alertness. He controlled a throwing knife, placing it directly against the man’s neck, warning, “Don’t move.”
The man froze, dropped the hammer, and called out to Lin Yimu, “Lone Wolf.”
“You?” Lin Yimu looked him up and down. The dim light made it impossible to recognize who it was.
“Ning Yuan?” It was Lu Weiyi, who was not far away, who recognized him by the wolf fang pendant peeking out from his neck. It was something he had kept after their group encountered a pack of wolves during a mission in the military. He had been bitten by a wolf, and after the wound healed, he had made the tooth into a pendant, calling it his hero’s medal and wearing it ever since.
“Weiyi!” Ning Yuan saw Lu Weiyi and almost cried out. “I finally found you!”
“You… you’re Ning Yuan?” Lin Yimu was a little incredulous. In his memory, Ning Yuan was a flashy guy who could change several outfits a day, as trendy as a peacock showing off its feathers, completely unrelated to the dirty coal ball in front of him.
“Yes,” Ning Yuan said, not caring about Lin Yimu’s indescribable gaze, and called out to Lu Weiyi, “Weiyi, Mingxu is in trouble!”
“Clang!” The watermelon knife in Lu Weiyi’s hand fell to the ground. “You… what did you say?”
His voice trembled without him even noticing.
Lin Yimu let Ning Yuan into the courtyard. Antonio checked outside and locked the door again.
“What happened to Mingxu? Tell us the details,” Lin Yimu said, also anxious upon hearing that Zhuang Mingxu was in trouble. He had no relatives and had been with Lu Weiyi and Zhuang Mingxu all these years, their relationship no less than family. “Did he become a zombie or… die?”
“Neither. Mingxu was captured,” Ning Yuan’s voice was terribly hoarse.
Hearing that the person was okay, the few people present all breathed a sigh of relief. Several of them had watched Lu Weiyi wait for him every day. If he was gone, they really didn’t know what this seemingly fragile young man would do.
Gu Qingyue took a bottle of water, unscrewed the cap, and handed it over. “Drink some water first, and tell us slowly.”
“Thank you.” Ning Yuan didn’t stand on ceremony, gulping down most of the bottle before looking at Lu Weiyi and telling them about their experiences after the earthquake. “He stayed behind with Ai Yi, saying it was to buy us time. Who knew Zheng Xin betrayed us? He tried to kill me on the road but failed. Going back, I don’t know what Mingxu will face. He also has a child with him…”
As long as the person was still alive, Lu Weiyi wasn’t worried, but, “Ai Yi… who is that?”
Ning Yuan was stunned for a long moment. Even Lin Yimu’s gaze towards Lu Weiyi was indescribable. After a moment, he said proactively, “Young Master, your and Mingxu’s child, Zhuang Ai Yi.”
A child?
How could two men have a child?
Not only Lu Weiyi thought so, everyone present had the same thought. The familiar Xu Sa directly asked, “Did you guys have a surrogate?”
“No… right?” Lu Weiyi had lived in the apocalypse for several years, not just the month or so they thought he had been away from Qingyuan, so his memory of some past events was still a bit hazy.
“Cultivated using dual-sperm in vitro fertilization technology,” Lin Yimu answered for him.
“There’s such a technology?” Xiong Jie looked like he had never seen the world, marveling before glancing at the others. Finding that they had the same expression as him, he instantly felt it wasn’t his lack of knowledge but rather that these people were too ahead of their time.
“The world of the rich is indeed beyond the imagination of ordinary people,” Xu Sa said with a cynical look.
“Agreed,” Gu Qingyue whispered.
“+1”
“Another +1”
…
Amidst everyone’s agreement, Lu Weiyi finally dredged up an image from the corner of his memory: a weak, constantly crying child.
When Zhuang Mingxu cultivated Zhuang Ai Yi, Lu Weiyi had just come of age, his own mental state had just returned to normal, and being young, he didn’t feel much for the suddenly appearing child. Plus, Zhuang Ai Yi was in poor health and wouldn’t stay home for more than a few times a year. Before the apocalypse, Lu Weiyi’s impression of him was just weak. After the apocalypse in his previous life, he had disappeared without a trace, so Lu Weiyi hadn’t remembered such a person for a while.
“Isn’t he in…” The research institute must have also had an accident. Lu Weiyi didn’t know what to ask about this unfamiliar child for a moment, so he changed the subject. “You just said Zhuang Mingxu doesn’t have an ability?”
“Yeah,” Ning Yuan replied.
“How could that be?” Lu Weiyi murmured. Could it be that things had really changed? Lu Weiyi couldn’t describe his current mood, both happy to have found Zhuang Mingxu and secretly annoyed that his rebirth seemed to have really changed some things.
Seeing that he wasn’t speaking, Ning Yuan’s gaze inadvertently swept around. Seeing that most of these people were strong and sturdy, with no one holding them back, he felt that Lu Weiyi was probably just tagging along with them to return to Qingyuan and probably didn’t have the authority to command them to rescue someone.
After all, in his memory, Lu Weiyi was not much different from a giant baby, with Zhuang Mingxu arranging every aspect of his life, from what university to study and what job to do after graduation, to what to eat for breakfast and what clothes to wear. Sometimes he even felt that Zhuang Mingxu was like a nanny, but the person himself was happy to do it, so others couldn’t say anything.
“Their goal must be the supplies that Mingxu prepared in advance. I wonder how Mingxu is now?” Those people were somewhat crazy, and Ning Yuan was worried about Zhuang Mingxu’s situation.
“If they’re after supplies, they definitely won’t harm Mingxu. We’ll return to Qingyuan overnight and find Wu Yue to get people…”
“No, rest tonight,” Lu Weiyi, who had been looking at the map, interrupted Ning Yuan.
“Zhuang Mingxu’s side is…” Zhuang Mingxu’s situation was best dealt with urgently, but Lu Weiyi was actually hesitating to wait until dawn. Ning Yuan had chased all the way here, and his dissatisfaction with Lu Weiyi reached its peak. Before he could say any reproachful words, he heard Lu Weiyi say in his usual cold tone,
“Go directly to Dongshan County first thing tomorrow morning.”
This is so exciting!!! Thank you for the update.
