Chapter 19: Excuse Me, Are You My Teammate? (2)
There were basically no pedestrians on the road, and the number of passing vehicles was pitifully small. Instead, two or three zombies wandered around stiffly. The sound of the car disturbed their peace, and they chased after it fiercely for a while, until the noise completely went out of range, and then they unconsciously wandered again, waiting for the next target to approach.
The nearest road was blocked by collapsed houses for a stretch, and they also had to avoid zombie gathering places like hospitals and schools. The two of them went around in circles, but with the man leading the way, they arrived at the mall safely.
Lu Weiyi parked the car on the side of the road where it wouldn’t be blocked, nimbly got out, kicked one zombie, and slashed another with his knife. Turning around, he swung his knife again, cutting half the head off a zombie that was approaching again.
With extremely good luck, both zombies had bead cores. He quickly collected them and looked towards the mall.
The mall, having experienced the earthquake, had one side collapsed, and all sorts of debris had fallen down, blocking the main entrance completely. If he had a companion, Lu Weiyi could have taken the time to look for other ways in, but alone… he hesitated, thinking about finding a mall that was easier to enter.
“Hey buddy, follow me,” the man called to him.
Seeing him about to turn, Lu Weiyi got back in the car and followed.
He parked the car on the side of the main entrance, got out with a steel rod in his hand. The steel rod was mixed with black bloodstains, probably from touching a zombie. He cautiously walked towards the underground parking lot next to it, lowering his voice, “The parking lot of this mall is underground, and there are stairs inside that can directly enter the mall.”
Lu Weiyi frowned, not wanting to be with him.
The man obviously misunderstood, thinking he was afraid he would steal his things, and comforted him, “The supermarket inside is very big, it’s impossible for the two of us to empty it. I’ll just grab some food and go look for people.”
Lu Weiyi nodded, turned on his phone flashlight, and shone it inside. The dark parking lot had a car parked sideways near the entrance, leaving only enough space for one person to squeeze through on either side. Clearly, someone had been here before.
“It might have been arranged by the government when they controlled the big malls before,” the man said in a low voice. “My name is Gu Qingyue, I’m a doctor. What’s your name, buddy?”
The silent and dark space made people uneasy. Gu Qingyue, a surgeon who had lived a gentle life for half his years, had limited fighting experience, let alone possibly facing monsters. He trembled slightly as he spoke, trying to ease the tension.
“Lu Weiyi… just graduated from university,” he should have, Lu Weiyi recalled seriously.
“Are you from here? Why are you out alone? Where’s your family?”
“From Qingyuan, came here to play,” Lu Weiyi said, shining his phone towards the stairwell door indicated by the safety sign and asking, “Do we go in from here?”
“This goes upstairs, the supermarket is still ahead.”
“Let’s go upstairs and get a big light first.” The underground supermarket had no lighting, it was pitch black everywhere, and going in rashly was no different from seeking death.
Hearing his words, Gu Qingyue remembered that there was a lighting store on the fifth floor. He nodded and took the lead into the stairwell door. Lu Weiyi followed behind, locking the door as he went. This was to prevent any ill-intentioned people from ambushing them later, and also to avoid any zombies accidentally entering.
Thanks to the earthquake, there were no working staff in the mall at all. Now that the zombie outbreak had occurred, these malls and workplaces were basically empty. The places where zombies gathered the most were people’s homes or institutions like hospitals and clinics that had been the first to receive the infected.
