Chapter 35: Shuyi
Shen Shuyi opened his mouth, then closed it again.
He realized that he had indeed been overly anxious, and Zhao Yuheng had noticed it.
Shen Shuyi was stunned for a few seconds.
Just now… did he get possessed by a ghost?
Why was he so nervous about this cheap fiancé?
According to his “mean boy from America” persona, if Zhao Yuheng really got into trouble, he would have only been gleeful to inherit his fortune and splurge it everywhere.
…Well, even if that were the case, Zhao didn’t have much inheritance to leave him anyway.
Shen Shuyi belatedly felt a little embarrassed and awkwardly said, “…I wasn’t anxious.”
Zhao Yuheng: “Hmm.”
Shen Shuyi emphasized, “I wasn’t worried either!”
Zhao Yuheng: “Okay. Let’s say it’s me overthinking, alright?”
Shen Shuyi: “….”
Shen Shuyi muttered: “It’s really you overthinking.”
Zhao Yuheng smiled: “Hmm.”
Shen Shuyi: “…”
Shen Shuyi wanted to argue further but seeing Zhao Yuheng’s calm, matter-of-fact demeanor, he felt a flash of irritation.
Yet in the end, his concern for Zhao Yuheng’s condition won over his impulse to slap him.
He decided to “store” that slap for later, until Zhao Yuheng got a bit better.
“You said it’s nothing. How nothing is it, really?” Shen Shuyi asked.
“Not serious.” Zhao Yuheng hesitated for a few seconds, then told him what happened that morning, omitting some of the more alarming details to prevent Shen Shuyi from panicking.
“This morning, the roads were slippery. I had a minor car accident at a traffic light turn. I’m already at the hospital.”
“A car accident?!” Shen Shuyi’s voice shot up, full of panic.
“Stop the car!” he immediately told Xiao Liu. “I’m going to the hospital!”
Zhao Yuheng spoke over the phone: “Shen Shuyi, I really am fine. Just some minor scratches…”
“Who cares if you’re fine!” Shen Shuyi shouted anxiously. “Which hospital? Send me the address immediately, hurry!”
Zhao Yuheng: “I—”
He said only one word, then gave up trying to persuade Shen Shuyi.
Shen Shuyi knew one thing very clearly: once he made a decision, no one could shake it.
“Peninsula Renhe Hospital.”
Beep. Shen Shuyi hung up.
Zhao Yuheng looked at the call interface and, for some reason, slightly curled his lips into a smile.
He looked up at the doctor: “Sorry, that was my boyfriend calling. He’s very worried about me.”
The doctor said, “I see. But I was asking about the risk of a fracture in your left leg. Do you want to consider a cast?”
“Wait for my boyfriend to decide. He’ll be here in half an hour. He probably hasn’t worried this much about anyone else before. I told him it was just scratches, yet he still can’t relax.”
Doctor: “….”
Calmly, the doctor said, “I see. But I didn’t ask about your boyfriend, Mr. Zhao.”
“My boyfriend is very good-looking.”
Doctor: “….”
The doctor snapped the black pen in his hand.
When Shen Shuyi arrived at the hospital, only half an hour had passed.
At the entrance of Peninsula Renhe Hospital, his luxurious Rolls-Royce immediately drew attention.
Normally, such cars only appeared at private hospitals.
Renhe is a public hospital? Are wealthy people really this “down-to-earth” now?
Seeing Shen Shuyi step out, the onlookers were stunned.
Shen Shuyi’s good looks were objectively noticeable.
Like a superstar in a small village, standing out dramatically, attracting 100% of head turns.
It was obvious that he would probably be photographed and posted online, with people asking if he was a top celebrity.
Luckily, he was a man; otherwise, coming to the hospital so openly, rumors about “pregnancy” might spread.
Boom. The door to Zhao Yuheng’s consultation room opened.
He turned and saw Shen Shuyi rushing in.
The young master wore a white shirt with gray patchwork on the shoulders, sleeves rolled to the elbows, revealing pale, smooth arms.
The hem was tucked into loose black silk pants, accentuating his slim waist.
His hair, usually straight and obedient, was styled in lazy French curls.
A PRADA necklace swung on his chest as he moved, giving a tantalizing impression.
Due to work, his outfit was more casual today, elegant yet understated, unlike his usual runway-level flamboyance.
“Doctor, my boyfriend is okay, right?!”
Boyfriend?
Zhao Yuheng was surprised and secretly pleased.
But he realized the “boyfriend” label was just Shen Shuyi’s convenient explanation for outsiders; their “arrangement” couldn’t be publicly acknowledged.
The doctor glanced at Shen Shuyi.
Damn! He’s actually really good-looking!
The doctor had thought Shen Shuyi’s comment was just his own fantasy.
After all, the internet had many stories where someone claimed their partner was beautiful but turned out to be a kappa.
He gritted his teeth silently.
Shen Shuyi nervously grabbed the medical report and began reading.
His pale face revealed concern, eyes trembling as he read.
“The patient suffered potential fractures to the left lower limb due to a car accident at 8 a.m., with intermittent neurological delusions…”
Shen Shuyi: ?! =?=!
Delusions?!
The doctor quickly snatched the report: “Wrong, wrong! This was just an unused draft!”
“…Oh.”
The doctor searched his desk and handed over the real report.
“This one, this one!”
Shen Shuyi eyed the doctor suspiciously, doubting the hospital’s competence.
“Nothing serious,” Zhao Yuheng interjected, cutting off Shen Shuyi’s thoughts.
Shen Shuyi refocused, glaring: “Whether it’s serious or not is for the doctor to decide, not you!”
He looked at the second report.
“~~~ … ~~~~~ … ~~~~~~~~~~~”
Shen Shuyi: ?
What is this, some kind of alien language?
Shen Shuyi sat in the consultation room, listening carefully to the doctor decode the medical jargon, and finally understood Zhao Yuheng’s injury.
The ligament in his left calf was torn, slightly better than a fracture, but the severity meant hospitalization for observation for three days.
Hearing it wasn’t a fracture, Shen Shuyi breathed a sigh of relief.
But hospitalization? His brows furrowed.
“Why hospitalization if it’s not serious?”
Shen Shuyi’s usual aura was cold and imposing.
He’d grown up adored, accustomed to authority and arrogance.
The doctor felt like a court physician in ancient times treating a princess.
Wiping sweat, he explained: “It’s just precautionary. If you don’t stay, it’s fine, but if something happens later, our hospital isn’t responsible.”
Shen Shuyi: ?
He was furious. Was the doctor threatening him?
He was about to argue when Zhao Yuheng stopped him:
“It’s fine. Just two days. Besides, the accident report isn’t out yet. If something happens after discharge, the other party might not admit it.”
“Accident report?” Shen Shuyi had never been in a car accident and had no idea.
Zhao Yuheng explained: “The other driver ran a red light, so it’s their full responsibility.”
Seeing Shen Shuyi’s confused expression, he continued patiently: “Meaning they owe me compensation.”
Shen Shuyi’s mouth formed a perfect “=o=!”
“You’re amazing, Zhao Yuheng,” he said, eyes shining. “You know so much.”
Zhao Yuheng found him cute yet exasperating.
Shen Shuyi continued: “What expression is that? You think I’m flattering you?”
“No,” Zhao Yuheng replied wisely.
Shen Shuyi snorted, then sincerely said: “I didn’t mean it as flattery. I mean you really know a lot. Schools don’t teach these life skills—you’ve clearly learned them through experience.”
Shen Shuyi genuinely thought this.
Despite his wealth and elite circle, he’d seen spoiled rich kids clueless about basic life skills.
He’d even harbored the same prejudice about Zhao Yuheng before their engagement.
But Zhao Yuheng was completely different—capable, sensible, and even baked cakes!
Zhao Yuheng could only conclude that Shen Shuyi saw their worlds as very different, hence finding even mundane matters interesting.
He felt a twinge of dissatisfaction—if only his family background were slightly better, would others consider them more compatible?
A few seconds of silence passed between them. Shen Shuyi, curious, asked:
“Zhao Yuheng, how did you know you could claim compensation? Have you done this before?”
Zhao Yuheng: ?
Before Zhao Yuheng could respond, Shen Shuyi had already obtained the hospitalization certificate, excitedly brought a wheelchair, intending to push Zhao Yuheng to the ward.
Zhao Yuheng imagined that if Shen Shuyi had encountered an injured stray dog as a child, he would have reacted just as enthusiastically, buying it a big house to play “home.”
Zhao Yuheng firmly refused the wheelchair and opted for crutches.
Shen Shuyi was disappointed but quickly distracted.
The ward on the eighth floor was tiny.
“Why is it so small!” Shen Shuyi exclaimed.
Zhao Yuheng sighed: “This is the standard size. Plus, I chose a single room knowing you might want to fuss over me.”
“The bed is tiny too.”
“The mattress is hard!”
“No balcony!”
“No private bathroom!”
“Why isn’t the window floor-to-ceiling?”
The nurses were giving them strange looks.
Zhao Yuheng interrupted: “Shuyi, it’s just a hospital. I’m staying two days only.”
Shen Shuyi paused, looking at him strangely.
Did he forget his surname when addressing him? Or was he weaker when sick?
“Ah.”
Shen Shuyi, distracted, opened the window to ventilate.
The air hardly circulated! He silently docked points from the hospital in his mind.
Hospital procedures were tedious, but Zhao Yuheng was familiar.
Shen Shuyi tried to help, but after several blunders, Zhao Yuheng stopped him:
“Shuyi, just watch. I’ll manage.”
Shen Shuyi insisted: “Let me help—you’re the patient.”
He promised, hands raised in a mock oath: “I’ve learned how to get the reports, really.”
After witnessing Shen Shuyi mismanaging medicine, directions, and doctors, Zhao Yuheng realized letting him “help” was impossible.
Better to let him play harmlessly, rather than risk creating a real disaster.
Still, Shen Shuyi worried endlessly about Zhao Yuheng overexerting himself.
Zhao Yuheng: “Shuyi.”
Shen Shuyi froze, straightening up.
Zhao Yuheng noticed he seemed a bit more obedient.
“Yes… as you see, my left leg is injured. Normally I could handle all the hospital processes alone, but not today. I was scared of being alone—what if I fell? But now, with you here, I don’t have to worry. You’ll watch over me, right?”
Shen Shuyi looked puzzled.
Zhao Yuheng sighed in relief, smiling gratefully: “You’ve really helped me a lot.”
Just keeping him from falling was enough.
Shen Shuyi, encouraged by the smile, felt a sense of duty.
“I’ll hold you carefully,” he promised.
“No need,” Zhao Yuheng said. “Just stay beside me.”
“Okay!”
Zhao Yuheng added: “Thanks, Shuyi.”
Shen Shuyi froze again.
Fifteen minutes later, Shen Shuyi’s mind cleared.
His over-worrying had prevented him from thinking straight.
Looking back, he realized he had acted like a fool.
Though being inexperienced in hospitals at twenty-something sounded stupid, he wasn’t deliberately dumb.
It was like someone visiting a foreign country for the first time, clueless about procedures.
Shen Shuyi had always used private doctors; this was his first time at a public hospital.
Naturally, it created extra trouble for Zhao Yuheng’s already inconvenient hospitalization.
Shen Shuyi felt guilty; he had intended to help, not add trouble.
After a busy afternoon and double his usual physical exertion, he finally calmed down.
By 4 PM, Zhao Yuheng had finished all procedures; Shen Shuyi was drowsy.
Zhao Yuheng asked: “Do you want to rest?”
“I’m not sleepy,” Shen Shuyi mumbled, eyes half-closed.
Zhao Yuheng: “…your eyes can’t even stay open.”
Seeing only a hard stool in the room, Zhao Yuheng had bought a cushion downstairs.
Still, the chair was uncomfortable.
“Come lie on the bed,” Zhao Yuheng urged.
Shen Shuyi refused: “No, you’re the patient. I’ll sit here.”
“I’m not paralyzed,” Zhao Yuheng insisted. “Go lie down.”
Shen Shuyi shook his head.
“Fine. You lie first.”
He hesitated but finally agreed; the stool was unreasonable.
“Half an hour only. Wake me when it’s up.”
“Okay.”
Relieved, Shen Shuyi climbed onto the bed, eyes closing in bliss.
TUT—this is where humans sleep!
Though not as luxurious as home, under the autumn effect, he found it extremely comfortable.
Within seconds, he drifted off.
Zhao Yuheng waited for him to settle, then got down; the bed was too small for two.
Shen Shuyi curled up, taking minimal space.
Zhao Yuheng felt oddly protective, sitting on the stool and covering him.
Shen Shuyi slept peacefully, flawless even up close.
He watched until a knock interrupted—doctors and nurses for rounds.
“Hello, we’re doing rounds.”
Orthopedics Dr. Chen led six or seven interns.
Rounds were procedural; the teacher demonstrated, students observed.
Dr. Chen went straight to the bedside: “First, ask the patient, then assess systematically, and finally conduct targeted physical exams.”
Interns nodded.
“Who will demonstrate?”
A male intern raised his hand: “I’ll go.”
Dr. Chen nodded, looking at Zhao Yuheng: “Sorry, this is a student demo, won’t take long.”
Zhao Yuheng agreed.
“Xiao Li, demonstrate examination. I’ll guide; the rest take turns.”
“Got it!”
Xiao Li nervously touched Shen Shuyi’s ankle.
Zhao Yuheng: ?
He grabbed Xiao Li’s hand: “What are you doing?”
Too late—Shen Shuyi’s ankle was perfectly fine.
Xiao Li stammered: “Dr. Chen, the patient… the leg… healed!”
Dr. Chen: ?
“How is this possible? This patient just arrived today. You need more practice.”
Dr. Chen pressed Shen Shuyi’s leg, amazed: “My goodness… a medical miracle!”
Zhao Yuheng finally understood.
He pinched his brow: “The one on the bed is… my friend. I’m the patient.”
