Chapter 29
In the spiritual recovery room, Han Baiyi, dressed in his military academy uniform, was holding Little Black Panther as he leaned back on the sofa.
The room was quiet, with no one to disturb them. Even the chaos in the Han family couldn’t reach him here.
Gently stroking Little Black Panther’s back, just as Teacher Bai used to, Han Baiyi murmured softly, “I know you don’t want to grow up, but it’s been a day already. How much longer can you hold on?”
Little Black Panther remained curled up in Han Baiyi’s arms, not even sparing him a glance.
As Han Baiyi tried to persuade Little Black Panther, he was really talking to himself. He muttered, “Only by growing up can we become strong. And when we’re strong, we can apply to join Commander Huo’s central patrol squad. Once we’re part of the patrol squad, we can request a transfer to Rose Nursery. That way, we can protect the nursery—and Teacher Bai.”
At this, Little Black Panther’s ears suddenly twitched, and it lifted its head to look steadily at Han Baiyi.
Its heart was stirred.
Before, Teacher Bai had always protected it. Now, it was about to protect Teacher Bai.
—
Back at Rose Nursery, Bai Nuosi had returned to his room after getting out of Huo Ranchuan’s car. He started packing up the toys Little Black Panther had played with and the dishes it had used.
Bai Nuosi explained to the livestream viewers, “Little Black Panther was taken back by its family. I don’t know if we’ll meet again, so I’m packing its things to send along with it. This little duck, Little Black Panther really liked it.”
The viewers of the livestream were quite disappointed:
[Ugh, I really didn’t expect Han Baiyi’s spiritual being to evolve so quickly. As expected from the vice-captain!]
[Waaah, does that mean we won’t see Teacher Bai’s livestream anymore? Now that the S-class cub is gone, we can’t enjoy watching the little ones online. QAQ.]
[I hope the livestream won’t be shut down! Even though I know S-classes are rare, aren’t military academy freshmen said to be one in a million? Isn’t there another S-class spiritual being that can take Little Black Panther’s place?]
[Even if there is another S-class, it’ll probably be assigned to a different caretaker. Not all S-class cubs can be taken care of by Teacher Bai, especially since he still has Little Black Snake to look after.]
Although Little Black Snake’s true identity was still unknown, it was also an S-class. The viewers didn’t think Rose Nursery would assign Bai Nuosi another spiritual cub.
The recent online uproar about Han Baiyi’s falling out with the Han family had become a hot topic, even trending on social media. Han Baiyi’s speech video had been watched countless times by billions of people.
This made Bai Nuosi even more beloved by the public, and his followers had almost reached a billion.
[Even though there are other excellent caretakers at Rose Nursery, and I know Teacher Bai has been exhausted lately and deserves a break, if there’s a new S-class cub, I really hope Teacher Bai can take care of it!]
[Agree x 999! Han Baiyi’s speech really touched me. Teacher Bai is the best teacher. It was his careful care that allowed Little Black Panther to bravely overcome its fears and truly grow!]
[OMG, everyone! Check the Empire Military Academy’s website! A second S-class has appeared!]
The second S-class at the Empire Military Academy had successfully differentiated and had been sent to Rose Nursery.
The viewers were beyond excited, frantically trying to find out the origins of this new S-class. Was it the captain of the new freshmen? The vice-captain? Or perhaps another child from a prominent family in the Empire?
However, Bai Nuosi was indifferent to all this. He focused on packing Little Black Panther’s belongings—its bath toys, toothbrush, towel, tableware, nightlight, plush toys, and little blanket—placing them all in a bag. Carrying the bag, he walked over to Huo Ranchuan’s vehicle.
Smiling, Bai Nuosi placed the bag in the back seat and said to Huo Ranchuan, “Director, these are all of Little Black Panther’s things. I’m not sure if he’ll still use them, but please pass them along to him.”
Huo Ranchuan nodded, looking at Bai Nuosi. He felt a pang of guilt, knowing that Bai Nuosi must be feeling much sadder than he let on. Softly, he said, “I will.”
After hesitating for a moment, Bai Nuosi couldn’t help but ask, “Director, has Little Black Panther already been taken away? Does that mean I can’t go say goodbye?”
Little Black Panther had been transferred to Han Baiyi’s exclusive spiritual recovery room. In its current state, it wasn’t suitable for visitors. A spiritual being in the midst of evolution could be dangerous due to the explosive growth in both its size and spiritual energy. If its energy went out of control, it could unintentionally harm others.
After a brief silence, Huo Ranchuan nodded.
Bai Nuosi felt a bit of regret, as he hadn’t had the chance to properly say goodbye to Little Black Panther.
While Bai Nuosi and Huo Ranchuan were talking, the usually popular Huo Ranchuan didn’t seem to attract the viewers’ attention this time.
The reason? All of the viewers’ focus was on what was happening in the garden behind them!
The livestream’s camera, pointed at Bai Nuosi, happened to capture a clear view of a round, chubby, fluffy black-and-white panda cub slowly sliding down a tree trunk behind him.
The chubby panda cub, slightly larger than Little Black Panther had been, wore a small golden tag around its neck, marking it as a spiritual being. It also had a terminal wristband on one of its front paws, equipped with a storage function.
The panda cub showed no fear of Little Black Snake. In fact, with the boldness of a confident social butterfly, it climbed right up onto the stone bench, stood on it, and reached out with its paws to grab onto the stone table. Finally, it plopped itself onto the table, nearly knocking Little Black Snake, who was drinking milk, off the edge!
Little Black Snake glared at the intruding panda, baring its sharp teeth and hissing: What are you staring at? Get lost!
Don’t you know whose territory this is?!
The panda cub, with its black eyes gleaming, sniffed the air. Its fur was slightly curly, making it look not only round and chubby but also a bit wild, like a curly-haired sheep from the back.
After sniffing a few times, the panda noticed a tempting smell coming from the bento box on the table—a tangy, appetizing scent that piqued its interest.
Having gone the whole day without eating, the panda was drawn to this aroma. It quickly found the source: a few flower-shaped pickled cucumbers.
Because today’s bento included mini hamburgers, Bai Nuosi had added some homemade pickles.
The panda was fascinated. It pointed a paw at Little Black Snake’s bento box, with a face full of adorable mischief, as if to say: I want that!
Little Black Snake was speechless. That’s the bento Teacher Bai made especially for me!
There’s barely enough for me to eat—why would I give any to this little rascal?
With a flick of its tail, Little Black Snake picked up a fork and speared a piece of pickle, waving it in front of the panda’s face. The tangy scent grew stronger, and the panda’s eyes followed the fork back and forth.
Its round head swayed in sync, completely mesmerized.
The panda cub thought Teng Snake would give it a bite, but instead, after teasing it enough, Teng Snake suddenly gobbled up the pickled cucumber.
Panda Cub: “…”
Teng Snake speared another piece, waved it in front of the panda a couple of times, and then chomp, ate it again, and kept repeating this with each piece.
Although the pickled cucumbers were homemade, Bai Nuosi hadn’t prepared much for the cubs, as the tangy, cool flavor wasn’t something they usually ate. There were only five thin, flower-shaped slices of pickles, and seeing that Teng Snake was about to finish them, the panda cub got angry!
In a sudden burst of rage, the panda swiped its paw directly toward the bento box to grab the remaining pickle, but Teng Snake reacted faster. With a swift motion, it snatched up the entire bento box in its mouth and, with a quick tilt of its head, gulped everything down in one go.
The panda cub froze mid-action, paw still outstretched, mouth slightly open, staring at Teng Snake in utter shock.
Teng Snake swallowed the food, then with a loud clank, spat out the empty dish. It gave the panda a smug grin, as if to say: Ha! My master’s thirty years of singlehood have honed my speed. Who can beat that?
Panda Cub: “…”
The panda cub was furious! It couldn’t let this obnoxious black snake get away with it!
The panda let out an ear-piercing scream, like a pig being slaughtered, and charged at Teng Snake with a wild howl.
Teng Snake was so startled by the heart-wrenching shriek that it panicked and started fleeing in all directions.
The livestream audience, meanwhile, found this all too amusing:
[Hahaha, Little Black Snake, this time you’ve really gone too far!]
[OMG, the panda screams like a pig when it’s angry! Dog head meme JPG.]
[Come on now, it’s just a pickle! Panda cub, don’t worry, Auntie will get you a whole planet’s worth of cucumbers!]
[How could you not share your pickles with the little panda, Black Snake? What kind of big brother are you?]
[Stop fighting, stop fighting! If you’re gonna fight, do it in front of Teacher Bai!]
[Teacher Bai! The cubs are fighting! Dog growling meme JPG.]
Bai Nuosi, who was still saying his goodbyes to Huo Ranchuan, didn’t need the audience’s reminders. He had already heard the panda’s pig-like scream.
He quickly turned around, his eyes wide in shock as he saw Little Black Snake darting around the garden, frantically fleeing from the furious panda cub chasing after it.
Bai Nuosi was stunned. His mouth hung open, utterly bewildered by the scene.
Huo Ranchuan, meanwhile, closed his eyes in embarrassment, unable to watch his spiritual being’s cowardly display.
Bai Nuosi stood frozen for a good ten seconds before suddenly covering his mouth in surprise. “A… a panda?”
After a couple of seconds, he seemed to realize what was happening and turned to Huo Ranchuan. “A panda! There’s a panda over there!”
A panda!
Wait a minute, Rose Nursery didn’t house wild animals, only beastman babies.
Bai Nuosi looked closely. Huh, the panda cub had a tag on its neck that flashed—was that really a cub’s identification tag?
Meanwhile, the chase continued. Teng Snake, not daring to fight an S-class cub, had no choice but to keep dodging. It couldn’t just keep running around forever, though.
In a stroke of inspiration, Teng Snake slithered swiftly up a tall tree.
To its surprise, the curly-furred panda cub followed suit, using its four paws to scramble up the tree trunk in no time.
Teng Snake: “???”
What?! This round, chubby thing can move that fast?
Realizing the panda was catching up, Teng Snake zoomed back down the tree and darted straight toward the artificial lake in the garden.
But the curly panda wasn’t scared at all. It quickly climbed down the tree, though its movements were so fast that it stumbled headfirst, rolling a few times before finally executing a perfect dive into the lake with a loud splash.
Teng Snake: “???”
What’s with this panda? It’s risking its life just to get back at me?
Teng Snake was stunned. This panda’s owner must be something else—definitely a tough one!
Haha! The panda seems like it’ll be a very interesting cub. Its main body is definitely a foodie and someone who resolves grudges with great vengeance, lol.
Thanks for the chapter! 😀
