Chapter 26
Bai Nuosi returned to his dorm with the two little ones. The doctor had suggested he stay in the infirmary overnight, but seeing the two cubs waiting on the corridor sofa made it hard for him to hold back.
Since the infirmary was close to the living quarters, if anything happened with his injury, he could quickly contact a doctor.
Fortunately, Huo Ranchuan didn’t say anything when they returned. After Mons dropped Bai Nuosi off, he said, “Xiao Bai, we’re expecting a new baby in Zone S tomorrow, so security in the area will be tightened. If you see more patrolling guards, don’t worry. Remember to contact me if anything comes up.”
Bai Nuosi stood at the door, bidding farewell to Mons. “Got it. Thanks for the reminder, Supervisor Mons.”
Mons gave a few more instructions about taking care of the wound, muttering for several minutes before leaving.
Bai Nuosi brought the two cubs inside, turned on the lights, and softly said, “There’s going to be a new baby in Zone S soon. Maybe they’ll live nearby, and you two will have a new friend.”
However, thinking about how the little black leopard had fought with the little gray wolf before, Bai Nuosi didn’t have high hopes for the black leopard making new friends. That was fine—if the little black snake and black leopard played together, they could grow up as close pals.
The little black leopard and little black snake weren’t interested in making new friends. As long as the new baby didn’t try to steal Teacher Bai, everything would be fine. Otherwise, there would definitely be trouble!
Their little world of three was already crowded enough.
After the two cubs finished drinking their milk, Bai Nuosi made them a simple dinner of meatball soup noodles.
He washed and minced fresh beef, adding a little salt, finely chopped carrots, and some starch to form beef meatballs. He also minced fresh shrimp, added broccoli and starch, and formed shrimp meatballs.
The colorful meatballs were lightly flavored, tender, and delicious. He boiled them into a soup and then added noodles, topping it with chopped green onions and leafy vegetables.
He divided the noodles into three bowls—two smaller and one larger—and set them on the table. The noodles were too hot for the little ones to eat right away.
In the meantime, he took the cubs to the bathroom for a bath.
Although Bai Nuosi’s arm injury had improved, moving it too much still caused pain. He avoided using his left arm, wrapping it with two layers of waterproof film. Wearing a tank top and shorts, he carried the cubs and placed them on two small stools in the bathroom.
He gently said, “Be good, little ones. Don’t move around. Teacher will give you a bath.”
It was already late, and Bai Nuosi was feeling tired, so he didn’t fill the tub for them to soak. He gave each cub a squeaky toy shark to play with and began washing the little black snake.
The black snake’s slippery scales made it easier to clean than the black leopard’s fur. The bloodstains on its body washed away quickly with warm water.
Just as Bai Nuosi was about to use baby soap on the little black snake, it looked at his injured arm and shook its head, indicating it didn’t want him to continue.
Bai Nuosi stopped, surprised. “What’s wrong, little one? Are you worried about Teacher Bai?”
The black snake nodded and then quickly slithered into a nearby bath basin, signaling Bai Nuosi to fill it with water. It could wash itself, even rolling around to prove its point.
Bai Nuosi felt touched. Even though they were still so small, they already cared about him. They were truly wonderful.
He filled the basin with half water, and the little black snake happily splashed around, cleaning itself. Its scales didn’t hold much dirt anyway.
Seeing how well the black snake could wash itself, Bai Nuosi gave it a double thumbs-up. “You’re amazing, little one! You wash better than Teacher Bai!”
The black snake puffed out its chest in pride, determined to be the best-behaved cub for Teacher Bai.
Since the snake could handle itself, Bai Nuosi turned to wash the little black leopard.
The black leopard’s fur was matted with dried blood and dirt, especially on its tail, belly, and back.
That once sleek, shiny fur now looked miserable, and Bai Nuosi felt uncomfortable just looking at it.
He put on a soft bath brush and was about to start cleaning the leopard when, suddenly, the cub clumsily slid off the stool. Shaking the water from its head, it waddled over and, with a leap, jumped right into the little black snake’s basin with a splash, water flying everywhere!
The little black snake, who had been happily rolling in the water, was suddenly caught off guard and became a cushion as the little black leopard’s round bottom landed squarely on it at the bottom of the tub!
Little Black Snake: “???”
Bai Nuosi: “…”
The little black leopard sat plumply in the tub, which was actually meant for the snake to bathe in and was smaller than the leopard’s own tub. Now, with the round leopard squeezed in, it nearly filled the entire tub.
Meanwhile, the little black snake was firmly squashed at the bottom of the tub, angrily slapping the black leopard’s back with its tail.
The little black leopard, with its ears drooping and paws nervously in front, and its long tail dragging on the ground, looked anxiously at Teacher Bai. It was clear the cub felt guilty, afraid that Bai Nuosi would be angry but unsure of what to do.
Bai Nuosi quickly went over to check on the little black snake, who had managed to poke its head out from the narrow space between the black leopard and the tub. The snake was clearly upset, nearly squished flat by the round leopard.
The little black snake gave the black leopard a hard slap on the back and glared at it: What’s wrong with you? Why did you jump into my tub?
The little black leopard blinked innocently, completely unrepentant: I want to wash myself too!
Little Black Snake: “…”
So, this clumsy leopard wanted to wash itself, but why did it have to jump into ‘his’ tub? The little snake had just gotten clean, but with the leopard’s leap, the once-clear water had turned murky!
Worse yet, it had been pinned under the leopard’s bottom, and even swallowed a couple of mouthfuls of water!
Ugh.
The little black snake was truly furious. It suspected the black leopard was taking revenge. After all, there could only be one favored cub by Teacher Bai’s side. Any extra would mean a fight.
Worried they might fight, Bai Nuosi quickly lifted the black snake out and cradled it in his arms. He then knelt in front of the little black leopard, smiling as he asked, “Did you jump into your brother’s tub because you also want to wash yourself?”
The little black leopard nervously avoided Bai Nuosi’s gaze, nodding with guilt. It didn’t dare meet Teacher Bai’s eyes—after all, it had caused Bai to get hurt earlier and just now splashed water all over him by mistake.
The little black leopard was feeling both guilty and anxious, its nose twitching and its eyes growing misty.
Bai Nuosi, feeling sorry for it, gently stroked the black leopard’s head and said tenderly, “Teacher knows you’re a good cub. You care about Teacher and want to wash yourself like your brother. I’m so happy.”
As he spoke, Bai Nuosi placed some soap on the edge of the tub and smiled at the little black leopard. “I know you’re very capable. You can wash your little tummy, your paws, and even your tail, right?”
Hearing Bai Nuosi’s praise, the little black leopard realized that Teacher Bai wasn’t angry, but was actually complimenting it. Its chest puffed out with pride, and its tail perked up as it nodded enthusiastically: Yes! I’m the best! I can wash myself!
The little black leopard immediately stretched out its long tail, and Bai Nuosi helped by squeezing some soap onto it. Then, the leopard started rubbing the soap onto its round little belly.
Its tummy was covered in fine, soft fur, which had absorbed a lot of water and was now wet. The little leopard used its paws to rub its belly, creating lots and lots of white, soapy bubbles!
As the bubbles grew, the dirt on its belly was washed away, and the little black leopard was delighted.
Sitting in the tub, it began scrubbing its back paws with bubbles, then its tail.
After a few minutes, the tub was no longer filled with murky water but instead overflowing with white bubbles.
Covered in bubbles, the little black leopard happily stood up in the tub, its bright eyes looking excitedly at Bai Nuosi: I’m all clean now!
Bai Nuosi, after wrapping the little black snake in a blanket and placing it on the small sofa by the bathroom door, smiled and returned to the still-bubbly black leopard. “Good job, little one! You’re so clean! Come here.”
He lifted the little black leopard out of the tub, then placed it on a stool under the showerhead. “Soap bubbles, white and fluffy, wash it away, splash, splash…”
Bai Nuosi turned on the shower and rinsed the bubbles off the black leopard. Then, using a soft massage brush, he carefully brushed the little leopard’s back while singing softly: “Soft brush, smooth fur… little towel, wipe it dry.”
Once the little black leopard was completely clean and smelled nice, Bai Nuosi put it into the dryer. “All dry and fresh!”
Bai Nuosi then carried his two sweet-smelling little ones to their dining chairs. The noodles had gotten a bit soggy since bath time had taken longer than expected.
However, it was a good experience because the two cubs had learned to take care of themselves. The little black leopard even learned how to scrub itself with bubbles, which was a huge achievement for such young cubs.
When Bai Nuosi had been drying the little black leopard’s fur earlier, he’d quickly taken a shower himself. Now, the three of them sat together to eat the somewhat cold noodles.
Teacher Bai gave each cub a little fork that fit their paws, letting them use it to spear the noodles and feed themselves.
The little black snake found the fork troublesome, so it tossed it aside, opened its mouth wide, and swallowed the entire bowl of noodles in one gulp, tipping its head back as it slurped everything down. When it lowered its head again, the bowl clattered to the table, completely empty.
Bai Nuosi: “…”
He turned to look at the little black leopard.
The black leopard also found the fork troublesome. Hesitantly and shyly, it set the fork on the table, then used its two front paws to lift the bowl and dumped all the noodles into its mouth.
Bai Nuosi: “…”
Ah, beast cubs—so efficient, even when eating.
The cubs were very well-behaved, finishing their noodles completely, even drinking all the soup.
Perhaps they were really hungry today, or maybe they were competing to be the most well-behaved cub beside Teacher Bai, trying to excel in everything they did.
After dinner, it wasn’t time to sleep yet, so Bai Nuosi took the two cubs to bed and prepared to tell them a bedtime story.
What Bai Nuosi didn’t know was that Han Baiyi’s favorite thing was Bai Nuosi’s bedtime stories.
Now, Han Baiyi had returned to the Han family. Perhaps because of the press conference scheduled for tomorrow, the family needed him to say something, so tonight, everyone in the Han household was treating him with unusual politeness.
The head of the Han family met him and, instead of punishing him with solitary confinement as usual, spoke a lot about his childhood, trying to sway Han Baiyi’s emotions.
Even the eldest young master of the Han family, who would always return to pick a fight, didn’t show up.
It was a rare, peaceful night.
This was the most tranquil night Han Baiyi had ever spent in the Han family.
Closing the door to his room tightly, Han Baiyi thought about the upcoming press conference. He wondered what the right course of action would be.
The Han family had certainly disappointed him, but at the same time, it filled him with fear.
If he broke away from the Han family, what would be waiting for him?
Han Baiyi felt very uncertain.
He closed his eyes, and through his connection with the little black leopard, quietly listened to Bai Nuosi telling the cubs a bedtime story.
As usual, the two soft, fragrant cubs snuggled on either side of Bai Nuosi. After tucking them under their little blankets, Bai Nuosi took out a picture book and gently said, “Today’s story is called Come Out! Come Out!”
On the other side, Huo Ran Chuan, who was leaning back in his office chair, couldn’t help but smile at the title. Just hearing the name sounded interesting.
The two cubs stared curiously at the book in Bai Nuosi’s hands. Bai Nuosi played some soft white noise through a small speaker, then lowered his voice and pointed at the pictures in the book, starting the story: “There’s a cave here, and inside the cave lives a little one who has never been outside…”
Bai Nuosi continued, “A caterpillar and a little snail were playing outside the cave. When they looked inside, they could only see two big eyes. ‘Wow, why won’t those big eyes come out? Look, the sky is so blue, the clouds are so white, the grass and flowers are so beautiful outside!’”
Bai Nuosi’s voice lowered even further, as if afraid of disturbing something, and he whispered mysteriously, “Ah! It turns out there’s a big bad wolf outside! The big bad wolf has sharp teeth, pointy ears, and sharp claws! Oh, the big bad wolf looks so fierce! He stepped on the caterpillar and kicked the little snail. He’s really scary!”
“The little one inside the cave was terrified. He didn’t dare to come out. When he saw the plate and fork next to the big bad wolf’s feet, he trembled, curling up into a ball, thinking the wolf was going to eat him!”
“The big bad wolf set traps outside the cave, trying to lure the little one out. Eventually, the wolf took out a delicious donut. The little one sniffed the air—he couldn’t resist! The donut smelled too good. His eyes curved with delight as he stretched out his hand and—‘Wow!’—he leaped out of the cave!”
At the end of the story, the picture showed a huge brown bear with a big, friendly smile standing outside the cave, arms wide open. Meanwhile, the once-arrogant big bad wolf, who had planned to eat the little one, had its fur standing on end, jumping three feet into the air in fright.
From that day forward, the big bad wolf shrunk back into the cave, while the happy, smiling brown bear sat outside. The wolf, now too scared to come out, only peeked out from the cave with his round eyes.
Bai Nuosi closed the picture book and gave the cubs a reflection on the story: “The big bad wolf thought he was so tough and that the little one was afraid of him for not coming out. But really, the little one was just hibernating. Once spring came, the little one came out.”
After putting the book away, Bai Nuosi patted the two cubs on their paws. “Alright, little ones, it’s time to sleep now.”
He turned off the lights, tidied up the bed and blankets for the cubs, and lay down on his own bed across from them, as usual.
But Han Baiyi couldn’t sleep at all.
He thought back to the daytime, when he knocked Wang Cheng unconscious with just two punches, and suddenly felt like his situation was very similar to the little one in the story.
He had been hiding in his own cave, afraid of the people outside. But perhaps they weren’t as terrifying as he had imagined.
Even a child could understand this simple truth, but it had taken him this long to realize it.
Han Baiyi couldn’t help but find his long-held fear somewhat ridiculous now.
I never expected the timid creature in the cave to be a large, brown bear, lol.
Thanks for the chapter! 😀
My favorite time is also teacher Bai’s stories…!!!!
Thanks for the translation!
