Chapter 21
Huo Ranchuan was speechless, irritated by his own spirit beast.
Internal he mocked the Teng Snake: Eat, eat, eat. All you do is eat. Why don’t you just eat until you burst?
Bai Nuosi smiled and reached out to pet the head of Teng Snake. Its mouth wasn’t very big, so trying to stuff a whole bear-shaped sandwich in was a bit of a struggle. Its cheeks bulged, and its eyes narrowed in satisfaction, as if it were enjoying the most delicious food in the world.
This piqued the curiosity of the black panther cub, who was still drinking milk. Just how tasty was that bear-shaped sandwich?
The panther cub put down the half-empty bottle, gently picked up a bear sandwich with its paws, and took a small bite. Immediately, its eyes widened slightly, and it turned to look at Bai Nuosi.
Although Han Baiyi was still lying in the military academy’s infirmary, not in great shape physically or mentally, this little bear sandwich was truly delicious!
Having grown up eating only nutritious meals, Han Baiyi rarely got to eat food he actually enjoyed.
The delicious meal instantly lifted his spirits.
Standing nearby, Huo Ranchuan watched as the two spirit beasts devoured their food, then turned to glance at Bai Nuosi.
Bai Nuosi looked pleased—his biggest worry was the cubs being picky and not eating well.
Suddenly, Huo Ranchuan spoke up: “You’re taking care of two babies. You could let the cafeteria handle the snacks and meals so you can take it easy.”
In fact, Rose Nursery didn’t require caregivers to prepare meals or snacks for the cubs, or even to teach them. The only responsibility of a caregiver was to manage the daily routines of the cubs. Typically, this role was filled by one mid-level caregiver with two assistant caregivers, a team of three.
They were more like nannies than teachers.
But clearly, Bai Nuosi had taken on more than just the role of nanny—he was also acting as a mother, teacher, and chef.
The difficulty of juggling these roles was immense, and even a real mother might struggle to do everything perfectly.
And Bai Nuosi didn’t have an assistant—he was doing it all by himself.
Although Huo Ranchuan knew this was because the panther cub resisted others, he still felt Bai Nuosi was working too hard.
Even triple his salary wouldn’t be enough to make up for such a heavy workload!
Hearing Huo Ranchuan’s suggestion, Bai Nuosi responded earnestly, “Thank you for your concern, Director, but I really enjoy making baby food. Seeing the little ones so happy while eating gives me a sense of accomplishment. Of course, the food in the nursery’s cafeteria is also great. I originally planned to take them there for lunch, but since the panther cub got sick, we didn’t make it.”
As he spoke, Bai Nuosi carefully looked at Huo Ranchuan and cautiously asked, “Director, is it against the rules for caregivers to cook for the cubs?”
Rose Nursery had many regulations, especially concerning the cubs’ diet, with strict requirements. Could it be that the principal thought his cooking wasn’t up to standard—lacking in nutrition or unsanitary—but didn’t want to say so directly?
Bai Nuosi started to feel nervous and stammered as he explained, “Actually, I—I have a certified qualification in child nutrition. I’ve specially studied this, and in terms of hygiene and nutrition, it’s all up to standard. But, if it’s not allowed, I won’t do it anymore.”
Before Huo Ranchuan could respond, the black panther cub, who was chewing on the bear-shaped sandwich, suddenly lifted its head and glared fiercely at him. In an angry tone, it slammed its paw on the blanket and demanded, “I want Xiao Bai to cook!”
Teng Snake nodded frantically, hissing in agreement, “Hiss hiss hiss!”
Huo Ranchuan: “…”
Narrowing his eyes, Huo Ranchuan stared at Teng Snake, “Are you trying to intimidate me?”
Teng Snake: “…”
Bai Nuosi: “…”
Huo Ranchuan was in disbelief. He could somewhat tolerate Han Baiyi, but his own spirit beast had the nerve to stand up to him?
Pointing at Teng Snake, Huo Ranchuan growled, “I… I raised you myself!”
He almost blurted out, “my spirit beast,” but managed to hold back. Teng Snake really knew how to push his buttons.
After being pointed at, Teng Snake instantly shrank back, slinking into Bai Nuosi’s arms, burying its face in shame.
Crap, drank too much milk and got drunk—it actually dared to slam the table at its master one day.
Teng Snake surrendered, but the black panther cub wasn’t backing down. Taking another bite of the bear sandwich, it slapped the blanket again and shouted in a childish voice, “I want Xiao Bai to cook!”
Huo Ranchuan was exasperated, “Alright, alright! When did I ever say Xiao Bai couldn’t cook? I was just reminding him not to overwork himself!”
Bai Nuosi, still holding Teng Snake, hurriedly intervened to smooth things over. “It’s really not too much work. Director, thank you for your concern. And please don’t take it personally with the cubs—they’re still young and don’t know better.”
Huo Ranchuan was fuming inside. ‘Young’ my foot.
They were old enough to be parents themselves, yet they were playing dumb just because Bai Nuosi didn’t know their real identities!
Feeling that he couldn’t stay any longer for fear of doing something rash—like hitting his own spirit beasts—Huo Ranchuan wiped his face and said, “Alright, since you’re fine, I’ll be heading out.”
He had been worried about the black panther’s spirit beast and Bai Nuosi, but now he was just full of frustration.
After Huo Ranchuan left, Bai Nuosi let out a sigh of relief. When the panther cub yelled at the director earlier, it had been terrifying.
Holding the little black snake in his arms, he anxiously said, “The director is actually very kind, but he’s pretty scary when he gets mad. Babies, you need to be more careful when talking to him from now on. But, baby—”
Bai Nuosi lifted the black snake and stared at its face, “So you were raised by the director? No wonder he came to take you away that day.”
Teng Snake: “…”
Teng Snake pretended not to understand what Teacher Xiao Bai was saying.
After all, it didn’t want to lie to Teacher Xiao Bai. Whether it nodded or shook its head, either way would be wrong.
The lie was its master’s; if things went wrong later, it would be its master’s fault, not the snake’s!
After the two cubs finished their meal and rested for about an hour, the sky began to darken. Mons personally drove a vehicle to take them back to their dorm.
On the way, Mons awkwardly said to Bai Nuosi, “Xiao Bai, the livestream cut off too abruptly this afternoon, and now there are many people online talking about it. They’re all worried about the black panther cub.”
Bai Nuosi, holding a cub in each arm, was surprised. “A lot of people are talking about it?”
When he had checked the livestream earlier, there were less than a hundred viewers, and barely any comments.
Mons nodded, “Yes, many are concerned about the black panther cub’s condition. So, I was hoping you could do another livestream for about half an hour when you get back, just to reassure everyone that the black panther cub is alright. I know it’s a bit of a hassle, but we really need your help.”
Though Huo Ranchuan hadn’t mentioned anything to Bai Nuosi, and Bai Nuosi himself didn’t care much about the online chatter, Rose Nursery had always faced criticism. Now, with the incident during the livestream, viewers were worried, and if anyone deliberately stirred things up, it could cause significant trouble.
The pressure from the public was almost entirely directed at Huo Ranchuan.
In just one afternoon, some had even started a petition to remove Huo Ranchuan from his position as the principal and to cancel the “Protect the Cubs Operation,” which would send all the spirit beast cubs back to their families.
Bai Nuosi, being a good employee, had plans to work and live on Beast Planet long-term. When his supervisor gave him a task, he naturally agreed without hesitation.
A half-hour livestream wasn’t too much trouble, after all.
However, when he got back to his room, Bai Nuosi was still curious. Were that many people really concerned about the black panther cub?
Had the video of the cub falling ill gone viral?
Since it was a cub in distress, it made sense that many people would be worried.
After returning, Bai Nuosi didn’t start the livestream immediately. Instead, he checked the black panther cub’s condition, feeling it had improved significantly. After consulting with Dr. Sagina, he set up two baby baths in the bathroom, filled them with warm water around 40°C, and placed some bath toys like little ducks and turtles inside.
He then carried the two cubs into the bathroom, saying, “Time for bath time, babies. Little black panther, one tub. Little black snake, another tub. Scrub-a-dub with bubbles, and we’ll wash clean with two towels…”
The two spirit beasts sat comfortably in their tubs, each with a white towel on their heads.
Though it was the panther cub’s second bath, it still felt shy when it saw the squeaky little yellow duck. Hesitant to press it, the cub looked nervously at Bai Nuosi.
Next to the panther, despite it being the black snake’s first bath, it was much bolder. As soon as it spotted the little yellow duck, it immediately coiled its tail around it, squeezing the poor duck, which let out a miserable squeak: “Squeak!”
“Oh? It can squeak?”
The Teng Snake got excited and began frantically playing with the yellow duck.
Black Panther: “…”
Ugh, Teng Snake was being way too rough. Couldn’t it hear how pitifully the little yellow duck was squeaking?
Angrily, the black panther cub grabbed its own little yellow duck and squeezed it just as hard, determined to out-squeak Teng Snake’s duck.
Soon, the bathroom was filled with the overlapping sounds of squeaky duck toys, each one louder than the last.
After Bai Nuosi finished giving the two cubs a bubble bath and washing them clean, he took a comb to groom the black panther cub’s fur. Once both cubs were bathed, he wrapped them in soft, dry towels and carried them to the sofa in the baby’s room. The two cubs, still gripping their yellow ducks, were placed down, and Bai Nuosi turned on the livestream ball.
Millions of viewers had already been anxiously waiting, and as soon as the stream started, the audience exploded with excitement.
[Ahhh! Teacher Xiao Bai! You finally started the livestream!]
[Teacher Xiao Bai! What happened with the S-rank spirit beast? Is it true its mental power had issues?]
[Rose Nursery is a total mess. Look what they’re doing to the spirit beast cubs! They must be conducting secret experiments! Just look at how the black panther fell ill!]
[I still believe in General Huo. He’s protected the empire for over ten years. Even if someone tries to bring the empire down, it definitely wouldn’t be him.]
The audience fiercely debated, and some even started arguing, but Bai Nuosi blinked in confusion, seeing only a few scattered comments on the screen. Was this the “large number of concerned people” that Supervisor Mons had mentioned?
Scratching his head, Bai Nuosi tilted his head slightly and spoke to the stream, “Hello, everyone. I’m Xiao Bai from Zone S. I heard people are worried about the black panther cub. The doctor said it’s fine, and he can go to sleep now. I just finished giving them a bath, and now, I’m going to give them a little body massage.”
After saying that, Bai Nuosi placed the little livestream ball aside and focused on the cubs. He first picked up the little black snake, still holding the yellow duck in its mouth, and gently placed it on the soft blanket-covered table.
Bai Nuosi explained to the viewers, “Giving babies a massage before bedtime helps with both physical and emotional development. Cubs love physical contact with their caregivers, like hugs, massages, and gentle strokes. It gives them a sense of security, which is essential for developing a healthy mind.”
While speaking, Bai Nuosi gently straightened the coiled black snake. Based on his understanding of beastmen, he poured some massage oil into his hands and began to lightly massage the snake’s back.
He massaged from the head down to the neck, back, tail, and even the belly—applying gentle, soothing strokes.
The viewers quickly forgot their arguments, now watching in shock:
[Wow! How do I send my spirit beast to Rose Nursery? I need answers, now!]
[Is it true that every military academy student’s spirit beast gets a gentle, skilled, and adorable Teacher Xiao Bai for bath time and massages? This is very important to me—if it’s true, I’ll sign up for the academy right away!]
[Man, with those massage skills, if the spirit beast’s owner feels this too, they must be in heaven right now!]
Meanwhile, Huo Ranchuan, who had just gotten home and was in the middle of taking off his clothes, suddenly felt it.
He could sense a pair of soft, gentle hands starting to massage his spirit beast from the head and neck, with expert and soothing movements.
Huo Ranchuan: “!!!”
Huo Ranchuan is practically being molested at this point! I almost want to feel sorry for him again, but I just can’t muster the emotion, lol.
Thanks for the chapter! 😀
Never thought of it that way but… LOL ROFL LIKE IM JUST LAUGHING LIKE A MANIAC NOW LOL XD
