Chapter 106
The little Birdy really liked Teacher Bai and also liked Mr. Golden Eagle. Having just awakened and come into this world, it had met so many kind people and felt incredibly happy every day. However, while it was planting a small potted plant in the garden with Teacher Bai, Huo Ranchuan and Chen Min stood by the window watching for a while. Then, Huo Ranchuan turned to look at Adean.
Adean was holding a small box of number-shaped cookies, nibbling on them as he watched Teacher Bai in the garden. Crossing his arms, Huo Ranchuan said, “Since you’re awake, I won’t make things difficult for you on Teacher Bai’s account. Tomorrow morning, I’ll have someone personally escort you back.”
Normally, offenders like him would either be imprisoned or deported. Huo Ranchuan was already being lenient, and returning to his home planet meant that his mercenary background would be wiped clean. He would go back as an innocent local resident and could do whatever he wished. However, this wasn’t what Adean wanted.
If he went back, he’d still be alone—no home, no family. Other than the small town where he grew up, there wasn’t much left for him. Hugging the box of cookies, Adean looked up at Huo Ranchuan.
Huo Ranchuan glanced at him. “What do you want to say?”
Adean turned to the window and muttered, “Nothing.”
Chen Min, hands in his pockets, shook his head, sighing with a hint of regret as he watched Adean’s stubborn expression. “Looks like I’ll have to find another student.”
Adean: “…”
Chen Min felt a bit troubled. In the past three years since the Golden Eagle’s rampage, he had left the mecha squad abruptly without a proper transition, which left the squad in disarray. Chen Min had never taken on a student, and many of his subordinates were originally placed there by the Chen family. After his departure, the squad fell into chaos, with various factions vying for power, all eager to replace him.
Now that he had returned, the internal strife in the mecha squad had yet to settle. Having severed ties with the Chen family, he needed to build his own power base. Like many others, he planned to recruit and train his own apprentices to become his trusted aides.
He asked Huo Ranchuan, “Do you have any ideas? Though asking you is pointless. This year’s S-level recruits, at least two of them are loyal to you. Out of a thousand new students, can’t you at least help me scout for one?”
Huo Ranchuan replied, “You know the supervisors of each section in the Rose Nursery. You can get the information from them. There are several birds in Sections A and B—you should check them out when you have time.”
Chen Min immediately opened his intelligence device. “I almost forgot, who’s in charge of Section A again…?”
He turned and headed out, clearly on his way to the nursery to pick out a student.
Adean, having witnessed the entire exchange: “…”
He stared at Chen Min’s retreating figure. This guy—he was trying to recruit him just a moment ago, and now he’s gone?
Feeling frustrated, Adean stuffed another cookie into his mouth, looking a little dejectedly at Teacher Bai outside. If he were sent back to his home planet, he might never see Teacher Bai again. The thought made him feel downcast.
Huo Ranchuan walked into the garden, watching Bai Nuosi planting with the little Birdy, both hands covered in soil. He asked, “Are you tired? Want something to eat?”
He remembered that Bai Nuosi usually prepared afternoon tea for the little ones around this time.
Bai Nuosi, crouching on the ground, looked up at him, his hair slightly messy and his face smudged with a bit of dirt. Smiling, he said, “I’m not tired, but the little Birdy does need something to eat.”
The babies had a lot of activity and needed small meals frequently; it was time for their afternoon snack. Huo Ranchuan took out a wet wipe from his pocket, crouched down, and started cleaning Bai Nuosi’s hands himself.
Feeling a bit shy, Bai Nuosi blushed and gently pulled his hand away. “Director, I can do it myself.”
The little Birdy watched from nearby. Its fluffy, cotton-white feathers were smudged with dirt, and its beady eyes darted between Huo Ranchuan and Bai Nuosi. For a moment, its little eyes were busy, glancing back and forth. Bai Nuosi, already embarrassed by Huo Ranchuan holding his hand, felt even more self-conscious with the little Birdy staring.
After Huo Ranchuan finished wiping one hand, Bai Nuosi, blushing, grabbed the wet wipe himself and said, “I can do it. The little Birdy is watching.”
Huo Ranchuan: “…”
Looking at the little Birdy, Huo Ranchuan felt more resolute in his decision not to have children in the future. He hadn’t planned on finding a partner anyway, given how often he had to go on dangerous, long-term missions. His high spiritual power also caused frequent irritability, and his temper wasn’t great. Now, having met Teacher Bai, he wanted to be with him. However, knowing how much Teacher Bai loved children, he wondered if, after they had kids, Teacher Bai would even pay attention to him anymore.
After cleaning his hands, Bai Nuosi picked up the little Birdy and began wiping the dirt off its body. Soon, the food ordered from the restaurant arrived. The deputy placed the food box on the garden table, setting out all the items.
Bai Nuosi was surprised. “Director, did you order snacks for the little Birdy?”
He noticed that Huo Ranchuan had become more considerate lately, showing more concern for others.
Huo Ranchuan looked at Bai Nuosi. “I ordered them especially for you.”
The little Birdy was just incidental.
The little Birdy glared at Huo Ranchuan, chirping angrily. Huo Ranchuan didn’t care. He wasn’t going to argue with a little bird. After all, it was being sent away the next morning, and it wouldn’t have a chance to monopolize Teacher Bai anymore.
Among the new students at the academy, nearly all had completed their awakenings. The next batch of students wouldn’t arrive until next year, and the second Rose Nursery was still under construction. Teacher Bai could have a long break. Once Huo Ranchuan dealt with the issues involving the Han family and the mercenary group, he could return and spend time with Teacher Bai.
Thinking about it, Huo Ranchuan felt a bit troubled. This mission wouldn’t be easy. It might take at least a month before he could return, and there was a high risk of injury. He wondered if Teacher Bai would mind him getting hurt. Teacher Bai seemed like a gentle soul; he probably wouldn’t like someone who was always fighting and often injured.
Bai Nuosi hadn’t agreed yet, but Huo Ranchuan was already worried about how they’d get along in the future. Holding the little Birdy in one arm and the newly planted potted flower in the other, Bai Nuosi sat down, preparing a bowl of milk for the little Birdy as usual. As the little Birdy drank, it kept glancing around, looking for the Golden Eagle.
Smiling, Bai Nuosi said, “Do you think the little Birdy is looking for Mr. Golden Eagle?”
Huo Ranchuan glanced at Adean, who was peeking through the door, his eyes watching. Huo Ranchuan figured that Chen Min’s earlier comment about finding a new student might have been a blow to Adean. Sometimes, people needed a push to realize what they truly wanted.
Huo Ranchuan gently brushed away Bai Nuosi’s bangs, which were blocking his eyes. Bai Nuosi, resting his head on the table, smiled at him without pulling away. Seeing Bai Nuosi’s smile made Huo Ranchuan’s heart race. He said softly, “Teacher Bai, I might need to go on a long trip in a couple of days. I’ll be gone for a while.”
Bai Nuosi paused, feeling a bit uneasy but still asking, “Where to, and for how long?”
Huo Ranchuan didn’t mention the mercenary base or the old aristocratic families’ conflicts. Although there was an S-level presence within the mercenary group, he wasn’t worried. He mainly didn’t want to scare Bai Nuosi. He chose his words carefully. “I’m going off-world, about a month or so. Mons won’t be going, so if you need anything, contact Mons. If you can’t reach him, call Chen Min or Qin Yuxing.”
Three of the four S-level students from this year’s academy would accompany Huo Ranchuan on this mission. Qin Yuxing, the youngest, was the Qin family’s only heir, and his grandfather didn’t want him on the front lines, preferring him to work in mech AI or repair instead. However, the other three would be trained intensively, and Huo Ranchuan intended to take them with him.
Bai Nuosi’s expression darkened slightly. Given recent attacks, it wasn’t hard to guess what Huo Ranchuan’s mission involved. But a month was a long time.
In a soft voice, Bai Nuosi said, “Director, please be safe and try not to get hurt.”
He added, “And Teng Snake too!”
Huo Ranchuan reached out to pat Bai Nuosi’s head. “I will.”
The kind-hearted Teacher Bai was truly adorable, making people want to protect him. Huo Ranchuan didn’t want to take advantage of his kindness to get close, but even without saying much, Bai Nuosi seemed to understand everything. He wasn’t just kind; he was also very attentive.
Returning to the dorm with the little Birdy after leaving the hospital, Bai Nuosi felt uneasy because Huo Ranchuan hadn’t come back with him. Instead, Huo Ranchuan went straight to the military headquarters to arrange tasks, given the urgency of his departure.
Chen Min, still staying in the neighboring dorm with the Golden Eagle, promised Huo Ranchuan he’d stay nearby to protect Bai Nuosi until his return. Even Mons, with no new charges in Section S, had left his duties at the nursery to patrol Bai Nuosi’s dormitory area with his team.
Everyone knew this mission was dangerous, involving not just the mercenary group but also the balance of power among the empire’s ten old families. Bai Nuosi didn’t feel like streaming. He put up a notice in his livestream channel saying he was taking a break, then bathed the little Birdy and lay down with it in his arms. Sighing, he murmured, “Little Birdy, have you ever worried about someone?”
The little Birdy tilted its head, its eyes fixed on the window. It didn’t have anyone it missed, but there was a certain bird it was quite fond of.
In the hospital, Adean lay awake, realizing he would be sent back in the morning. His childhood idol, Chen Min, had likely already found a new apprentice at the academy. This thought left him feeling both sad and aggrieved.
Meanwhile, the little Birdy, unable to stay still while Teacher Bai slept, quietly slipped out from under the covers. The small flower pot Teacher Bai had helped it plant that afternoon was placed on the garden balcony next to the two rose pots Bai Nuosi had planted earlier. The two rose plants were budding, while the new flower was still a young seedling.
The little Birdy carefully climbed out to the balcony, grabbed the handle of the small pot with its beak, and, with much difficulty, crawled onto the railing. Holding the pot, it flapped its wings, trying to fly over to the neighboring balcony. However, it had not yet learned to fly properly, and its wings were too short and weak. As soon as it got out, it plummeted.
It managed to stabilize itself mid-air, closing its eyes and flapping its wings with all its might. The distance between the two balconies was about two meters—something Chen Min could cover in one leap. For the little Birdy, it took a whole hour of strenuous effort!
Finally, with its destination in sight, the little Birdy, panting heavily, stood on the railing of the neighboring balcony, clutching the small pot that was heavier than itself.
Inside, the Golden Eagle, hearing some noise, silently walked out. Chen Min, lying in bed, sensed it was the little Birdy and chose not to intervene.
The Golden Eagle had a suspicion that maybe this little cutie had come personally. As it walked out onto the balcony, it saw the fluffy ball with the pot in its beak under the moonlight.
Upon seeing it, the little Birdy excitedly squeezed through the railing, placed the pot down, and motioned to the Golden Eagle, thrilled. “Chirp chirp, chirp chirp!”
Look! A little flower!
The Golden Eagle was taken aback, stepping back with its wings clutching its chest, staring at the little Birdy in panic.
The little Birdy tilted its head in confusion, hopping down from the balcony and moving closer to the golden eagle. “Chirp?”
What’s wrong, boss? Don’t you like it?
Seeing the little Birdy approaching, the Golden Eagle panicked and stepped back again until it was pressed against the wall. It extended a wing and gently pushed the little Birdy away. You’re too young for this.
The little Birdy: “???”
Just then, the light from the neighboring room turned on. Bai Nuosi, following his habit of checking on the little ones at night, found that the little Birdy was missing.
He walked out, softly calling, “Birdy? Little Birdy? Where are you?”
The Golden Eagle: “!!!”
The little Birdy: “!!!”
The Golden Eagle panicked. It wasn’t sure if the little Birdy had actually stolen the flower, but right now, it felt like it was the one caught stealing!
Hearing Bai Nuosi’s approaching footsteps, the Golden Eagle, in a flustered state, instinctively scooped up the little Birdy with one claw and, in a flash, dashed back inside. It hastily opened a drawer, stuffed the little Birdy inside, and slammed it shut.
The Golden Eagle leaned against the cabinet, its expression one of sheer panic. Chen Min emerged from his bedroom, staring blankly at the Golden Eagle.
The golden eagle: “…”
I’m not—I didn’t—let me explain!
Ohh myy God this eagle is so hilarious ????
