After Waking Up I Inherited the Earth [Interstellar] – CH7

Chapter 7

Many people would assume that rich families must own a private starship—how could the Xie family not have one?

But in reality, starships had very poor cost performance. Civilian starships were similar in function to star cruisers; aside from being a bit larger and a bit faster, they didn’t have other advantages. In terms of agility, they were even inferior to star cruisers, yet their prices were dozens or even hundreds of times higher. As a result, aside from starship companies, auction houses, and plantation-planet lords, very few people actually bought starships.

Before Xie Xingchen’s parents died, the Xie family did have a small starship used to transport specialty products from their plantation planets. But when his parents were killed by star pirates, that starship vanished with them into cosmic dust.

“Young master, do you really not need me to go with you?” The butler looked at Xie Xingchen with eyes full of worry.

In his heart, Xie Xingchen was still an immature child. And if he was a child, how could anyone possibly let him live alone?

Seeing that the butler wanted to go to Earth with him, Xie Xingchen refused without thinking. “No need. This is a test I’m setting for myself. Butler, your health isn’t good—stay here.”

Xie Xingchen didn’t want the butler who was familiar with the original owner to stay by his side.

If it weren’t for the fact that the original owner had been acting more and more strangely these past years and had distanced himself from the butler, the butler—who had watched him grow up—would have realized long ago that he wasn’t the original model.

Now that he had a chance to get away from the butler, Xie Xingchen wanted to leave as soon as possible.

After he left, and a few years passed, he could come back without fearing that the butler would notice anything strange.

After all, everyone knew pioneering was difficult. Anyone who went off to pioneer for a few years couldn’t possibly come back still looking like an un-grown young master.

Whether it was voluntary or not, across the entire galaxy, those who returned from pioneering always showed some changes—both psychologically and physically.

Thinking about his own unpromising body, Butler Xie couldn’t help letting out a sigh. He didn’t force the issue anymore.

He was one of the unluckiest people in the Star Alliance—born with a tendency to absorb dark matter more easily than others. So even though he served as the butler of the Xie family, a famous plantation family, and even though he ate food containing green matter most of the time, there was still a lot of dark matter in his body. And that dark matter inevitably meant he occasionally had to spend a few days in the hospital.

The central planet had top-tier medical care, so he could receive effective treatment here. But what about on a wasteland planet? There, his body would be a ticking time bomb. Forget helping—he’d be lucky if he didn’t frighten his young master.

The butler warned Xie Xingchen again and again: “Then you must be careful. If you run into anything you can’t handle, you have to come back, understand?”

Xie Xingchen smiled good-naturedly and nodded. “Got it. Butler, you just stay at the B District estate and manage things well. Maybe later I’ll even have to rely on the money you earn to subsidize that wasteland planet!”

Hearing that, the butler finally showed a smile.

He wasn’t useless. He could still earn money for the young master on the central planet and add bricks and mortar to the young master’s pioneering road!

The central planet had many ports—large, medium, and small. The starship to Yuyang Star in the Gamma Supercluster was docked at one of the small interstellar ports (simply called a starport).

A small starport could only dock a few starships at a time, so there weren’t many travelers there. And since most of the starships departing today were headed for remote planets, there were even fewer passengers.

Xie Dao carried bags and bags like a doting parent, refusing to let Xie Xingchen lift a finger no matter how tired he was.

Xie Xingchen felt helpless, but considering Xie Dao’s health—and the fact that once he boarded, Xie Dao wouldn’t be carrying things for much longer anyway—he silently allowed this indulgent behavior.

From the central planet to Yuyang Star, the starship trip took a little over three days, nearly four. Afraid Xie Xingchen would be uncomfortable, the butler had the chef make countless dishes the day before, packed everything in freshness boxes, and prepared to bring them along for Xie Xingchen.

The butler chattered on: “Young master, if you get hungry, you must remember to eat. Everything I prepared is food you used to love most.”

Food containing green matter was expensive. Large starships still provided it, but on a small starship you had to bring your own.

Hearing this, Xie Xingchen reached out to take the insulated box. However—

The butler turned and dodged. “Just let me carry it.”

Seeing the butler on the verge of tears, Xie Xingchen could only raise both hands in surrender.

Fine. If he wanted to carry it, let him carry it. Anyway, it wouldn’t be for long.

Arriving at the ticket gate, Xie Xingchen refused the butler’s suggestion to buy a ticket and go in to see him off. With a twitching mouth, he snatched two food boxes from the butler’s hands, then walked away without looking back.

That stubborn expression made the butler both amused and exasperated, but it also steadied the anxious heart in his chest.

The butler didn’t look old, but in truth he had been with the Xie family for a very, very long time—so long that back when Xie Xingchen’s father left the central planet for the plantation planets, it had been him who saw him off.

At this moment, Xie Xingchen’s slender back seemed to overlap with the young, inexperienced back of Xie Xingchen’s father from those years.

Xie Xingchen had bought a first-class ticket. First class had a separate VIP entrance—this passage was only for first-class passengers.

Having only ever seen starships on StarNet and through the original owner’s memories, Xie Xingchen was now like a country bumpkin who couldn’t suppress his curiosity, glancing around everywhere.

Just as he was marveling that this starship looked far more high-tech and dazzling than any ship he’d seen in sci-fi movies, a deliberately dismissive snort suddenly came from the side.

“Xie Xingchen, after divorcing my brother you’ve really gotten pathetic, huh? You can actually look at this piece-of-junk starship with such relish?”

A familiar voice, a familiar tone. Xie Xingchen knew who was speaking—but he simply didn’t want to bother with him.

With someone deliberately picking a fight, no matter how good the starship was, Xie Xingchen had no mood to appreciate it.

And more importantly, he didn’t want to talk to a brat. So he quickened his pace toward boarding.

But the person behind him seemed to have set his sights on him, persistently and precisely harassing him.

“Xie Xingchen, are you deaf? Why aren’t you answering me?!”

“I know you heard me. Xie Xingchen, turn around right now.”

The other party’s arrogant words made Xie Xingchen roll his eyes.

Turn around right now?
Heh. Why should I listen to you?

Are you my dad or my mom?
Xie Xingchen’s silence only made the guy behind him more relentless.
He kept shouting: “Hey, you’re not seriously going to cut ties with me, are you? Fine, you divorced my brother—so what? Lots of people stay friends after divorce.”

At that, Xie Xingchen finally turned his head.

But he still didn’t speak. He only threw out two words: “Heh.”

Though he didn’t know what it meant, Fu Yunsen somehow felt mocked and instantly exploded. “Xie Xingchen—what do you mean by that?”

Xie Xingchen sneered and shrugged carelessly. “What do I mean? What I mean is none of your damn business. Are you that pathetic? ‘Friend’ this, ‘friend’ that—who the hell is friends with you?”

Now that the money was in his hands, Xie Xingchen couldn’t be bothered to play nice with the two of them anymore.

But Xie Xingchen’s blunt words not only left Fu Yunsen dumbstruck—they also made Fu Yunzhou start questioning reality.

Wasn’t this guy still crying and begging not to divorce just two days ago?

Why did he look like a completely different person now?

Fu Yunsen’s mouth fell open. “Hey, Xie Xingchen—are you crazy?”

Even Fu Yunzhou couldn’t help frowning as he asked tactfully, “Xingchen, did something happen to you?”

Crazy? Something happened?
So if he spoke a bit harshly to them, that meant something was wrong?
Xie Xingchen rolled his eyes with annoyance. “Hmph. I can’t be bothered talking to you two dumbasses.”

They had never heard Xie Xingchen speak to them in this tone. Even at the worst of times, Xie Xingchen had never once called them “dumbasses.”

This time, even Fu Yunsen—the one with the hottest temper—suspected Xie Xingchen was sick, and sick badly.

Fu Yunsen couldn’t help stepping forward, trying to place his hand on Xie Xingchen’s forehead to see if he was running a fever.

However—

With a loud “smack,” Xie Xingchen ruthlessly knocked Fu Yunsen’s hand away.

Xie Xingchen frowned and backed up. “Don’t touch me.”

The pain in his hand made Fu Yunsen furious. He glared at Xie Xingchen and demanded loudly, “Xie Xingchen—are you sick? I was kindly checking on you and you hit me?!”

That aggrieved expression made Xie Xingchen speechless to the extreme.

What kind of one-in-a-billion brat was this?
Did he seriously not understand the phrase “whoever starts it is the cheap one”?

No—he and his brother were divorced. That meant he had no relationship with their family at all. And this divorce had been anything but dignified. And yet he still wanted to “stay friends” after divorce?

Dreaming would be faster.

Xie Xingchen felt that if he didn’t speak harshly enough, this self-righteous brat might cling to him again in the future.

Xie Xingchen took another step back. Only after he’d retreated to a safe distance did he say to Fu Yunsen, “You need to understand: the only reason I had anything to do with you was because I married your brother. Now that your brother and I are divorced, that means I have nothing to do with your family.”

Fu Yunsen knew that, but he didn’t care. Instead, he waved it off casually. “I know you and my brother divorced, but weren’t we good friends before? You used to always say I was your best friend.”

Xie Xingchen: “……”

Was the original owner sick in the head?
He actually sincerely treated his little brother-in-law as his best friend?

No wonder this brat was so fearless.

Xie Xingchen: ) smile.jpg
Xie Xingchen: “You should also know that ‘friends’ isn’t some relationship you can’t cut off. Plenty of friends stop being friends. And what a coincidence—I don’t want to be friends with you anymore. Not now, and not in the future. So please stop bothering me. If you run into me, pretend you don’t know me, OK?”

Afraid his words weren’t harsh enough, Xie Xingchen continued, “Since we’ve already torn the mask off, don’t be so damn shameless. Don’t come sticking to me, okay? Can’t you tell I’m genuinely annoyed by you? Can you people have a bit of self-awareness?”

After that, Xie Xingchen didn’t care how the brothers reacted. He immediately turned and left, like he was shaking off a plague.

Fu Yunsen: ?

When he came back to his senses and realized he’d been despised, Fu Yunsen exploded.

He yanked at his brother and pointed in the direction Xie Xingchen had left, shouting loudly and petulantly, “Bro, go curse him out for me! Don’t think that just because he bought a plantation planet and became a planet lord he can treat me like this!”

But unexpectedly, his always-indulgent brother shook his head and refused.

Watching Xie Xingchen’s back, Fu Yunzhou said with a complicated tone, “Probably not.”

Fu Yunzhou wasn’t as simple as his younger brother. He knew Xie Xingchen had just clearly stated his attitude.

Fu Yunzhou suddenly recalled how, a few days ago, Xie Xingchen had coldly told him that after the divorce, if they met again they’d be strangers.

He was angry, but at the same time he suddenly had a feeling—as if he’d thrown away something important.

Rejected by his own brother, Fu Yunsen stomped his foot.

He yelled at Fu Yunzhou in disbelief, “No way, bro—you’re helping him instead of me? You don’t even like him, so why are you helping him? I even gave up my vacation to go with you to some remote planet to help you out. Looks like I’m just too kind-hearted!”

After saying that, Fu Yunsen stormed into the brothers’ cabin area, picked a room in a huff, and locked the door.

Fu Yunzhou, following behind, couldn’t help sighing. He glanced at Xie Xingchen’s back again with a bit of confusion. His departing steps seemed to grow heavier.

As for whatever argument the brothers had after they returned to their rooms, Xie Xingchen didn’t care in the slightest.
