After Spectating Gossip, the Entertainment Industry Thinks I’m a Big Shot – CH38

Chapter 38

“Achoo!!”

Right in the middle of his sentence, Sun Hongfei let out a powerful sneeze.

Gao Shen looked at him with concern. “Mr. Sun, are you catching a cold?”

Sun Hongfei was puzzled. He was usually in great health, but lately, he’d been feeling strangely chilly and sneezing a lot. Maybe he really was coming down with something.

But he shrugged it off, saying, “I should be fine. I’m generally very healthy.”

Gao Shen replied, “Mr. Sun, please take care of yourself!”

After all, Sun was now the crew’s financial savior—he couldn’t afford to fall ill! Gu Xingshi nodded earnestly. “Mr. Sun, maybe it’d be best if you got a checkup once you’re back?”

Sun had initially thought of declining, but seeing the concern in Gu Xingshi’s eyes, he changed his mind. “Alright, I’ll follow your advice, President Gu, and go for a checkup as soon as I return.”

By this time, the group had arrived at the barbecue restaurant.

With a grand gesture, Gao Shen announced, “Eat, drink—tonight it’s on me!”

A chorus of cheers erupted from the group: “Director Gao, you’re the best!”

Everyone swarmed the fridge, eager to grab everything in sight.

Meanwhile, Gao Shen, Gu Xingshi, Sun Hongfei, and a few others settled into a private room.

Raising his glass, Gao Shen looked gratefully at both Gu Xingshi and Sun Hongfei. “President Gu, Mr. Sun, here’s to both of you! Without your support, this drama might have been shelved, and my career as a director would’ve been over…”

At this, Gao Shen’s voice wavered with emotion.

Today had been a rollercoaster of emotions for him, and if he weren’t as resilient, he might not have made it through. After nearly ten years in the industry, he’d finally gotten this opportunity. Failure would mean no second chance, possibly even the end of his screenwriting career.

Moreover, he was still paying off a mortgage, and with his daughter starting school in Beijing next year, they’d need that apartment for residency. If he lost his career, he’d not only jeopardize his own future but his daughter’s as well.

In many ways, Sun Hongfei and Gu Xingshi hadn’t only saved his career but his family’s future.

Wiping a tear from the corner of his eye, Gao Shen choked up, “I won’t say much more, but I’ll remember this kindness for the rest of my life.”

With that, he downed his drink in one go.

Sun Hongfei, about the same age as Gao Shen, understood the sentiment well and gave him a supportive pat on the shoulder.

Gao Shen, with the ups and downs of the day and a few drinks in him, began to open up. “President Gu, you’re straightforward, so I’ll be honest with you. Originally, Qin’s role wasn’t just a third lead—he was the second lead, actually the hidden main antagonist.”

Gu Xingshi blinked in surprise. “This…”

Seeing his reaction, Gao Shen quickly explained, “President Gu, it’s not because I’m trying to flatter you. This was actually my initial vision…”

Gao Shen had put a lot of thought into his first directorial project.

Originally, Gao Shen had wanted to create a hidden antagonist within the protagonist’s team, leading to a shocking twist. To make the twist impactful, this character would not only deceive the main characters but also the audience.

Thus, he created the character of Yu Changyan, who, on the surface, appeared as a gentle and devoted nobleman but was, in fact, a cold and ruthless villain.

The more the audience admired and trusted him early on, the more they would be shocked by the twist when his true nature was revealed.

Unfortunately, a previous investor thought the plan was too risky. Unlike novels, where readers might appreciate complex twists, TV audiences often invest emotionally in characters. Such a drastic transformation might frustrate viewers, leading them to feel betrayed by the “collapsed” character.

There was truth to this perspective, though Gao Shen believed in trusting the audience’s appreciation for intricate storytelling. But the investor wouldn’t budge, so Gao Shen had to reluctantly cut these scenes and add a simpler villain character.

Thus, Gu Xingshi and the others had only seen the flat, utilitarian version of Yu Changyan.

As Gao Shen shared his original vision, Gu Xingshi listened intently.

It was clear that Gao Shen was talented; in the original story, every clue was carefully connected, building tension until the explosive climax. The entire arc was crafted brilliantly.

Yu Changyan wasn’t purely a villain. Driven by a sense of justice and responsibility, he stood for the greater good. From his perspective, he was absolutely righteous.

While he and the protagonist’s team were at odds, he felt genuine admiration and respect for them. But because of conflicting loyalties, they ultimately became adversaries.

This wasn’t just a simple mystery—it was a profound exploration of social class and the oppression of humanity under imperial power, adding depth and complexity to the story.

Yu Changyan’s character was incredibly layered and compelling.

If portrayed well, he could leave a lasting mark on viewers.

Qin Wen was captivated.

Until now, acting hadn’t sparked any strong emotions in him. He was only pursuing it because Gu Xingshi had suggested it, just as he had done countless other jobs he didn’t enjoy to survive.

He had no interest in fame or admiration, and despite being in his twenties, he felt as though he had the calm, detached perspective of someone much older.

But as he listened to Gao Shen bring Yu Changyan’s ambitions, struggles, and uncertainties to life, he felt a fire ignite within him.

An intense desire told him, I want to play this role!

Before he knew it, he had spoken the words out loud.

Everyone looked at him in astonishment.

Qin Wen’s normally composed voice trembled slightly, but his tone was resolute. “President Gu, Director Gao, I want this role!”

Gao Shen scratched his head, feeling a bit regretful.

He shouldn’t have let the alcohol loosen his tongue and blurted out everything.

The role was indeed phenomenal, but it was a challenging and risky one. A single misstep could make the character seem like a chaotic antagonist, inviting harsh criticism from the audience.

It wasn’t a role for a newcomer like Qin Wen; even seasoned actors would struggle with it.

Gao Shen had initially planned to give the second male lead a tragic yet strong backstory, enhancing his character. With Qin Wen’s appearance, it would be a likable role that, when performed, would surely win over fans and make his path in the industry smoother.

Faced with a clear and steady path to stardom, Gao Shen couldn’t understand why Qin Wen would choose a more difficult and uncertain road.

So he tried to persuade Qin Wen gently.

But Qin Wen seemed completely set on it, resolute in his desire to portray this version of Yu Changyan. He insisted repeatedly, “Director Gao, don’t worry, I know I can do it. I’ll put everything I have into understanding this character. If I don’t do it well, you can berate or punish me however you want!”

Seeing his determination, Gao Shen could only turn to Gu Xingshi. “President Gu, what do you think…?”

Qin Wen also looked at Gu Xingshi, his gaze almost pleading.

Gu Xingshi was silent for a moment.

If it was simply about becoming a star, then the safer path Gao Shen suggested was the better choice.

But…

His eyes landed on Qin Wen’s hands.

Those long, elegant fingers were clenched into fists, knuckles white from the pressure, a clear sign of his anxiety.

Gu Xingshi recalled the things the system had told him about Qin Wen’s past—this was probably the first time in his life that Qin Wen wanted to do something for himself, rather than for others.

Feeling his heart soften, Gu Xingshi made up his mind.

Forget it. If it failed, they simply wouldn’t make any money. They’d been broke before and survived, hadn’t they?

Clearing his throat, he said, “Director Gao, I think this version of the story is excellent. Why not give it a shot?”

Qin Wen felt a weight lift off his shoulders. He felt Gu Xingshi’s unwavering trust and warmth and nearly choked up.

So this is what it feels like to have someone to lean on?

It was as though, no matter what he chose to do, he could look back and see Gu Xingshi standing there behind him.

At that moment, the armor Qin Wen had been carrying for so long finally fell away. His battered, sensitive heart began to open to the world again. His numb, dormant spirit started to stir once more.

For years, it was as if he had been living under anesthesia, cutting himself off from pain, fear, and desire. He’d recklessly pursued a path of self-destruction, unable to feel the consequences.

But now he wanted to pull that needle out and feel everything, even pain, if it meant he could truly live.

Qin Wen unclenched his hands, turned, and gave Gu Xingshi a strong hug. “Thank you.”

Sensing the significance of the moment, Gu Xingshi gently patted his back.

Gao Shen: “…?”

This was the first time he’d ever seen an agent so indulgent with their artist!

Exasperated, he looked over at Sun Hongfei, hoping for some backup.

But Sun Hongfei’s mind was on high alert.

That look of attachment and trust Qin Wen gave Gu Xingshi just now—he was sure he hadn’t imagined it!

He knew Qin Wen’s story—that Gu Xingshi had saved him, helped him avenge his sister, and even signed him on as an actor. With that kind of indebtedness, developing feelings wasn’t so surprising. And Gu was attractive, after all!

But if Qin Wen really had ulterior motives, with his acting skills and close proximity to Gu, wasn’t that extremely dangerous?!

No way!

For the sake of Gu and Wen’s relationship, Sun Hongfei resolved to nip even the faintest hint of trouble in the bud!

Rather than giving Qin Wen a minor role, allowing him to linger around President Gu every day, wouldn’t it be better for him to take on a challenging role? Regardless of how it turns out, at least he’d be kept busy on the set. With fewer chances to interact with President Gu, the risk of him trying to get close to Gu would be eliminated!

With this thought, Sun Hongfei declared with righteous conviction, “I believe that when it comes to filming a drama, it should be done however looks best! The reason we’ve seen fewer good dramas in recent years is that creators limit themselves, always thinking about what the audience won’t like. I think it’s nonsense!”

“What do audiences like? Audiences like a great story! I may not be a creator, but I’m a viewer too. I don’t need creators to make choices for me; I need them to create a compelling story!”

His speech left everyone stunned.

Gao Shen fell into a deep silence, realizing that Sun Hongfei’s words had struck him like a hammer, jolting him awake.

He remembered how full of ambition he was when he first entered the industry, never caring for formulaic conflicts or clichés. Back then, he was determined to create a story that would truly amaze.

But when had he turned into the very kind of person he once despised?

He used to blame investors for limiting him, or actors for avoiding complex roles.

But now, he had an investor willing to support him and an talented actor, determined, and eager for the role. Why was he hesitating?

An old spark of determination flared within him, burning away concerns about ratings, profit, or fame. He was back to being the passionate creator he had once been.

He felt as though he’d broken through a barrier, uniting years of experience with his original passion. A flood of ideas poured into his mind, bringing scenes to life, allowing him to see even the tiniest imperfections in what he’d once thought was a flawless story.

Driven, he jumped up, opened his laptop, and started typing furiously.

By the time he was finished, it was well past midnight. Everyone else was sprawled around, dead drunk, some slumped over tables and others lying on the floor.

Gu Xingshi was the only one still awake.

Gao Shen blinked in confusion. “What… happened here?”

“Oh, they challenged me to a drinking contest,” Gu Xingshi replied innocently, holding up his pinky finger with a grin. “I can hold my liquor just a tiny bit.”

Gao Shen: “…”

From what Sun Hongfei had mentioned, Gao had assumed Gu was a “protected little bunny,” pure and sweet. Now, he realized this was perhaps his biggest misunderstanding about President Gu.

Gu Xingshi smiled warmly. “All done, Director Gao?”

Gao Shen snapped back to reality and handed over the outline he had just written, his excitement bubbling over. “President Gu, I have complete confidence now! This drama is going to be absolutely incredible!”

Gu Xingshi was equally stunned after reading the outline.

He could hardly believe that Gao Shen had written this in just a few hours.

The script was phenomenal!!!

He even had a feeling this drama was bound to be a hit once it aired.

*

Due to Gao Shen’s last-minute script revisions, the start date for filming was postponed by two weeks.

In the meantime, the court hearings for Lin Laosan and his accomplices, who drove Qin Wen’s sister to suicide, were scheduled to begin. Since Qin Wen needed to testify, Gu Xingshi decided to accompany him back to Lu’nan Province to witness justice being served.

Coincidentally, Meng Yuansheng and Cheng Xin had a break in their schedules, and since Cheng Xin was from Lu’nan Province, they all agreed to meet up there, with Cheng Xin playing host and showing them around.

However, just as Meng and Cheng had booked their flights, the system popped up: [Host! New scoop alert!]

Gu Xingshi: [?]

System: [Popular actress Li Jiaro’s personal information was leaked, allowing haters to maliciously change her flight booking. It messed up her schedule so badly she had to miss the Ao Gang Film Festival, and her Best Actress award will now be accepted by someone else from her team.]

Gu Xingshi: [What’s wrong with these haters?]

Then, he had a sudden thought: [Is this kind of info leak common? Could Meng Yuansheng and Cheng Xin’s info be exposed too?]

System: [I can only say that this sort of leak isn’t rare, especially with flight bookings—they’re extremely easy to modify. As for whether Meng Yuansheng and Cheng Xin have been exposed, well, you know me, Host. If I could tell you, it would mean they’re part of a “scoop,” and I don’t think you’d want that outcome, would you?]

Gu Xingshi: […]

After considering the situation, he decided to play it safe. As two of the hottest boy band members, Meng and Cheng might not have haters, but there could be fans—especially invasive ones who’d deliberately book seats next to them, making the entire journey uncomfortable.

To avoid any potential issues, he called both Meng and Cheng, advising them to cancel their flights and take the high-speed train instead. Since it would only take four hours, it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience.

Meng and Cheng, ever respectful of Gu Xingshi’s advice, agreed without hesitation, canceling their tickets right away. But since the next day’s high-speed tickets were sold out, they’d have to postpone their trip by a day.

As for Gu Xingshi and Qin Wen, they didn’t have to worry about such matters, so they kept their original flight booking.

Once at the airport, Gu Xingshi insisted that Qin Wen wear a mask and hat.

Qin Wen was slightly puzzled. “Is that really necessary? I’m not a celebrity.”

“Not yet, but you could be in the future!”

Gu Xingshi remembered last night’s scoop from the system, about a star whose team had to spend a fortune to buy and destroy a photo of her picking her nose before her debut.

The amount made Gu Xingshi’s heart skip a beat.

While Qin Wen didn’t seem like the type to pick his nose, who knew what kind of embarrassing photo someone might snap?

And their company was seriously strapped for cash!!!

Better to avoid any risks from now on and keep a low profile.

Seeing how serious Gu Xingshi was, Qin Wen had no choice but to comply, covering himself with a mask and hat.

But as he glanced at Gu Xingshi, who was fresh-faced and unguarded, he couldn’t help but ask, “President Gu, why aren’t you wearing a mask and hat?”

“Me?” Gu Xingshi shrugged nonchalantly. “I’m just a manager. Who cares if I get caught in an ugly photo? There’s no money anyone could extort from me!”

Qin Wen: “…”

After a two-hour flight, they soon arrived in Wu Jin City, the capital of Lu’nan Province.

The two of them had napped on the plane and were still a bit groggy as they left the airport and took a cab directly to their hotel. They didn’t notice the two men lurking in the airport, cameras in hand, snapping pictures of them from afar.

These men were paparazzi who had bought Meng Yuansheng and Cheng Xin’s flight information, knowing that they were scheduled to arrive in Lu’nan Province on what appeared to be a private trip without their assistants.

Arriving early at Wu Jin City Airport, they were surprised to find several other paparazzi there, too. But when the flight landed, Meng Yuansheng and Cheng Xin were nowhere to be seen.

Most of the paparazzi, assuming they’d been tricked, left in frustration, cursing under their breath. Only this pair decided to stick around just in case.

And it paid off—they caught sight of Gu Xingshi!

Paparazzi A quickly recognized him. As for the man next to him, covered up from head to toe, he was clearly one of Gu’s artists.

They knew Gu Xingshi only managed two people: Meng Yuansheng and Cheng Xin.

The two men scrutinized the photos they’d taken.

“This build… looks like Cheng Xin, right?”

“Seems so. I think Meng Yuansheng is a bit slimmer. But if this is Cheng Xin, then where’s Meng?”

“Maybe he couldn’t make it last minute. Either way, we’re lucky to catch anything on Cheng Xin! Plenty of buyers out there want info on him.”

“Alright, let’s keep following.”

With that, they tailed Gu Xingshi and his companion to their hotel and parked nearby, watching the entrance closely.

As soon as Gu Xingshi and Qin Wen arrived at the hotel, Gu received a call from Officer Lin. “You’ve arrived, right?”

“Yes, we have. The hearing’s tomorrow, isn’t it?” asked Gu.

Officer Lin sounded concerned. “We found out during the investigation that Lin Laosan’s wife, Zhang Li, has some… connections. She has a sworn ‘brother’ in the underworld, and word’s gone out that if Qin Wen sets foot in Lu’nan Province, they’re going to make him pay. I reported this, and it’s been taken seriously. For safety, it’s best if you both stay at the police dormitory.”

Hearing this, Gu Xingshi and Qin Wen agreed.

“I’ll be driving by your hotel in a bit,” Officer Lin added. “I’ll pick you up.”

So, the two of them packed up their luggage once more. When they exited the hotel, they spotted a police car waiting for them by the roadside.

The two of them: “…”

Officer Lin got out of the car, awkwardly clearing his throat. “For safety reasons, you understand. This car was specially approved by the department…”

Well, fine.

They had no choice, so they obediently got into the car.

Meanwhile, the paparazzi, watching from a distance, were left completely dumbfounded, though it didn’t stop them from furiously snapping photos.

“Holy—! Major scoop!!”

“A top boy band member… actually getting escorted by the cops?”

“Is he here to turn himself in?”

“If this story breaks, Twitter will totally crash!”

To make sure, they decided to follow the police car at a safe distance. However, wary of getting too close to the Public Security Bureau, they stopped short and only watched from afar. The car pulled into the Bureau’s lot and didn’t come back out. Neither Gu Xingshi nor “Cheng Xin” emerged.

The next day, they saw the same police car leave the Bureau, this time headed toward the courthouse. At the same time, they spotted reporters holding microphones labeled with the official legal channel’s logo and a camera crew entering the courthouse.

“It’s confirmed!”

“He’s definitely in trouble—this must be a serious case!”

“Oh man, we’re about to hit the jackpot!”

*

A few hours later, the trial finally concluded.

Lin Laosan and his accomplices received their deserved punishments.

Qin Wen breathed a long sigh of relief. His sister’s name was finally cleared, and he could finally lay down the burden he’d carried for so long and move on with his life.

However, given that the threat from Lin Laosan’s associates still lingered, Gu Xingshi called Cheng Xin and Meng Yuansheng to let them know it’d be safer not to come to Lu’nan Province for now. Instead, they’d find somewhere else to meet up and relax.

Officer Lin invited them to have lunch at the station’s cafeteria before escorting them back to the airport.

But just as the food was served, the system excitedly popped up: [Host, what did I say! Whenever an artist’s name comes up, there’s a scoop in the making! Congratulations—you’ve got a scoop on Cheng Xin!]

Gu Xingshi: [?]

After hearing the system out, he was left speechless.

After a moment, he turned to Officer Lin and asked seriously, “Officer Lin, what are the legal consequences of leaking a celebrity’s flight information?”

Without missing a beat, Officer Lin replied, “According to the Criminal Law, if one sells or provides citizens’ personal information to others, under serious circumstances, they could face up to three years in prison or detention, plus fines; if the case is particularly severe, it could be three to seven years of imprisonment with additional fines.”

After explaining, he remembered that Gu Xingshi was a manager and added, “However, it’s tricky to collect evidence for these cases. These people operate all over the place and stay as slippery as eels, so it often requires coordination across multiple jurisdictions. And there has to be solid evidence that the information was leaked…”

Gu Xingshi picked up his phone and pointed to the “trending” tag on the hot topic page. “Would this… count as evidence?”

Officer Lin: “…”

“According to the timestamps on these photos, it seems the paparazzi are likely still in Wu Jin City.” Gu Xingshi smiled. “Officer Lin, if I file a report now, there wouldn’t be any issue, would there?”
