Chapter 7
If someone else saw a green cat like Wen Xin did, they would surely suspect that this poor little kitten had been dyed by unscrupulous merchants to fetch a good price.
In fact, that was also Wen Xin’s first reaction.
He frowned slightly, squatted down, and extended his hand toward the green furball.
Looking at the hand stretched out before him, Ah Lü couldn’t help feeling a bit smug.
He had thought he would need to put in some effort to gain the young man’s trust, but he hadn’t expected to attract his attention so easily.
Sure enough, humans are easily deceived by such weak and soft appearances.
No wonder the black furball had transformed to hide by the young man’s side.
Following along smoothly, he rubbed against Wen Xin’s palm. “Meow~”
If there were grades for disguises, Ah Lü would give himself a perfect score.
Listen to his voice—so wonderfully charming! Surely it would make the young man’s heart flutter.
In reality, Wen Xin didn’t pay much attention to the green furball’s meowing.
Upon touching Ah Lü, he noticed that although the fur felt fluffy and smooth, it carried an unusually familiar coldness.
Looking more closely, he immediately spotted something unusual.
The cat’s body wasn’t just a monotonous green; shades like bright green, forest green, and dark green outlined a magnificent layering effect, as exquisite as a game’s CG animation.
Such natural beauty absolutely couldn’t be faked by cheap dyes.
First, the black furball was being hunted; then Wen Jinfeng (his elder brother) told him not to go out; and now he had encountered this strange green furball.
Wen Xin’s fingers trembled, alarm bells ringing in his heart.
He forced himself to stay calm and glanced at his phone. “Oh no, it’s already this time! I need to hurry, or I’ll be late for work!”
The young man’s palm was warm, and given the cold weather, it had an indescribable allure for Ah Lü, who was originally from the tropical rainforest.
He was squinting his eyes in enjoyment when suddenly the warmth on his head disappeared—the young man was striding away.
What is “going to work”?
Ah Lü didn’t know.
He didn’t like interacting with humans. After traversing mountains and rivers from City H to here, he had always avoided crowds and had limited exposure to human vocabulary.
But he knew that the young man would eventually return home.
So Ah Lü swayed his body, hid back in the shadows, transformed back into his snake form, and coiled up.
He lifted his long tail, placing it on the spot the young man had touched on his head. His snake eyes narrowed lazily as he savored the novel warmth.
*
In the blink of an eye, it was evening.
The hospital was too crowded, so after work, Wen Xin went to a clinic.
He used the excuse that he had fallen down the stairs and, although there were no obvious wounds, his chest felt tight and painful.
After listening to his chest, the old doctor prescribed some medicine and mentioned that he had been staying up late and was physically weak, advising him to rest more.
Wen Xin agreed, went to the pharmacy to pay, and on a whim bought some common household medicines.
As he approached the entrance to his community, he suddenly remembered the green furball he had encountered earlier and stopped in his tracks.
To avoid being ambushed, Wen Xin cautiously took a detour through the back entrance, avoiding the community garden as he returned home.
“I’m back.”
As soon as he entered, he saw the black furball waiting in the entryway. Wen Xin was pleasantly surprised and picked up the little guy directly.
The black furball glanced at the medicine bag in the young man’s hand and paused slightly.
The other was injured? Could it be because of last night…
Suddenly, he keenly detected a new scent on the young man—very faint but unmistakable.
The black furball immediately frowned, his gaze deepening.
Why did Wen Xin have Ah Lü’s scent on him?
Wen Xin rubbed him a couple of times, put the medicines into the storage box, and organized food, water, and medicines together, preparing for any eventuality.
So far, he had two boxes of instant food, a dozen unopened bottles of mineral water, and a box of commonly used medicines.
He planned to buy more at the commercial street over the weekend; that should be enough—any more would go to waste.
“Meow.”
The black furball suddenly came to his side, his tail pointing toward the door. Wen Xin understood and asked in confusion, “You want to go out now?”
Seeing the black furball affirm, he frowned slightly.
Yesterday, the other had rarely gone out once, and the degree of his transformation that night was worse than usual.
Perhaps the two were just coincidental, but it added to Wen Xin’s worry.
Most importantly, there was now a green cat in the community garden, and it seemed peculiar.
He had an indescribable intuition that the green cat was related to Xiao Hei.
He was worried that the latter might get hurt.
But the black furball insisted on going out, even meowing several more times, rubbing against Wen Xin’s pant leg and circling back and forth.
“Meow.” Need to go out.
Wen Xin had never seen Xiao Hei like this before; his heart softened.
“Alright.” He opened the door for Xiao Hei. “Be careful.”
Xiao Hei nodded.
After the black furball went out, Wen Xin returned to the kitchen to prepare dinner.
He had just sliced a few pieces of meat when he couldn’t help but put down the knife, washed his hands, grabbed his coat, and went downstairs.
He didn’t know where the black furball had gone, but the green furball shouldn’t be hard to find.
Wen Xin walked all the way to the community garden and indeed saw the figures of two furballs in the bushes.
Unexpectedly, not only were the two furballs not fighting, but they were also very close, appearing harmonious.
Originally, Wen Xin thought the green furball was there to catch Xiao Hei, but now it seemed he might have been wrong.
In the next moment, he saw the green furball suddenly open its mouth and take a bite on the black furball’s foreleg.
The latter merely lowered his head in tolerance, not immediately dodging.
Wen Xin was extremely surprised.
He knew how cold and unapproachable the black furball’s personality was, yet he was so accommodating to the green furball.
He was a bit worried that Xiao Hei might be hurt, but the green furball only took one bite and then stopped—not like an attack, more like playing around.
Or perhaps… flirting?
Wen Xin suddenly realized and felt both surprised and amused. He hadn’t expected Xiao Hei to insist on going out for this.
Meanwhile, Ah Lü had just finished injecting venom into the black furball.
Although venom could regenerate, it wasn’t inexhaustible. Injecting venom two days in a row left Ah Lü feeling a bit weak.
He said feebly, “That should be enough. You’re not made of iron; the amount I injected can even suppress your gene disorder.”
This was exactly the effect the black furball wanted.
His transformations were too frequent, causing Wen Xin to get hurt and preventing him from resting well.
Using venom to suppress gene disorder would delay his evolution into a complete form, but it could extend the transformation cycle from once a day to about once a week.
He endured the pain and carefully sensed the changes.
The venom slowly flowed through his body, and under the self-protection mechanism, his restless blood finally calmed down.
This change made the black furball sigh in relief.
Then he looked at Ah Lü, who was disguised as a cat and narrowed his eyes.
He had found the reason why Wen Xin carried the snake’s scent. Humans would avoid venomous snakes but rarely avoided cats.
Not long ago, Ah Lü had mocked the appearance of cats, and now he had proactively transformed into one.
Was he trying to get close to Wen Xin?
“Xiao Hei.”
The young man’s voice suddenly appeared, and both furballs froze.
The black furball paused, silently retracting his sharp claws.
Wen Xin approached them, first rubbing his own black furball, then looking at the green furball with a hint of apology in his eyes. “Sorry for misunderstanding you earlier today.”
As he spoke, he also rubbed the green furball’s head to show his goodwill.
If he remembered correctly, the other liked being petted this way and would squint comfortably.
Indeed, the green furball had been waiting for Wen Xin for a long time.
From when the sun climbed overhead to when it slowly set in the west, and finally, when stars appeared in the bleak night sky, he had been eagerly waiting at the community gate.
Puzzled by how long “going to work” took, wondering why the person hadn’t appeared yet.
Until the black furball came out, he still hadn’t seen the young man’s figure.
Suddenly, the green furball seemed to understand something, his confused emotions growing stronger, gradually turning into anger at being toyed with!
Originally, when the young man appeared, Ah Lü didn’t intend to pay attention.
But this cunning human had touched him again, letting him feel the same warmth as during the day.
That damned warmth.
Ah Lü wanted to snort arrogantly, but he couldn’t help leaning into Wen Xin’s palm.
“Meow—”
I forgive you; pet me some more—
His meowing was soft and coquettish, making Wen Xin even more certain that this was a little female cat—or a female little monster—and he couldn’t help but smile and rub her again. “Good girl.”
The interaction between the man and the furball was unexpectedly harmonious, almost causing the black furball beside them to explode.
