Chapter 49
Shang Yu had just stepped out of her vehicle and didn’t catch what Fu Suxi had said. Confused, she asked, “What did you say?”
“Lock down the Bureau. No one is allowed in or out.”
With that, Fu Suxi dashed toward the building ahead, moving so fast he left only a blur of black in his wake.
Yu Zhi hadn’t even processed what was happening when he saw a shadow flash to the window.
Sopping wet black hair, eyes brimming with murderous intent, and the pungent stench of blood emanated from him. Even the water dripping off him was tinged red, like blood-soaked rain.
He looked like a vengeful specter.
Yu Zhi snapped out of his daze, his lips trembling slightly. Instinctively, he extended his arm and slammed the window shut with a loud bang, sealing it tightly.
Now locked out, Fu Suxi’s icy, piercing gaze bore straight into Yu Zhi’s face through the glass.
Yu Zhi took a deep breath, turned, and bolted.
His strides were long, but every step tugged at his injuries. After just a few paces, he stumbled.
Watching his thin, frantic figure retreat, Fu Suxi’s smirk deepened. He raised a fist and punched the window.
Crash!
The glass shattered, scattering shards across the floor.
Fu Suxi vaulted through the window, sparing only a brief glance at the stunned Dr. Qi by the side.
His eyes lingered on the doctor’s white coat and name badge before he turned and strode out of the room.
By the time he reached the hallway, Yu Zhi had already made it to the other end.
Fu Suxi chuckled softly, his tone dripping with mockery. “At least you’re running faster than you used to.”
The corridor was deserted, save for the two distinct sounds of footsteps echoing through it.
One set was hurried, accompanied by labored breathing—Yu Zhi’s.
The other was slow, measured, and unhurried—Fu Suxi’s.
Yu Zhi cursed internally. Fu Suxi hadn’t changed a bit. Just like in H City, he was taking his time, confident that Yu Zhi wouldn’t escape. He wanted to toy with him before making the kill.
Without looking back, Yu Zhi sprinted forward, heading straight for the fire escape.
[User “Scarecrow’s Plow” eagerly anticipates your death.]
[User “Rich Young Master” hopes you’ll survive and tips 0.1 universal coins.]
[User “momo” wonders why you’re not using the item.]
[User “Supreme King” can’t wait to witness your demise.]
[User “World’s Cutest Girl” fervently prays for you to be thoroughly humiliated.]
Yu Zhi glanced at the scrolling comments, gritting his teeth as he dashed into the fire escape. Slamming the door shut behind him, he quickly descended to the first floor.
He paused by the stairwell, scanning his surroundings.
To his left was the elevator, and ahead was the main entrance of the building.
Outside, rain poured relentlessly. In the distance, he could see the Bureau’s large iron gate shut tightly.
Red lights flickered on, sweeping over the walls and scanning every corner. Two individuals who had reached the gate were stopped and turned away.
Clearly, no one was being allowed to enter or exit.
Bang!
The fire escape door above him was kicked open, slamming hard against the wall.
Yu Zhi looked up and locked eyes with Fu Suxi, who was standing on the third floor.
His eyelashes quivered, and he turned sharply, running to the right.
That direction led to the building where Zuo Feiyang and Lu Liming were located—the research facility where Espers underwent parasitic contamination testing.
Wiping the rainwater off his face, Yu Zhi darted down the right-side corridor and ran toward the end.
Before long, he collided with two men who had just exited the restroom.
The two men, startled by Yu Zhi’s frantic running, gave him a curious glance.
Yu Zhi quickly sized them up. They weren’t wearing the Bureau’s black uniforms but ordinary clothes. They could be newly arrived Espers or other staff members.
Seeing no suspicion or hostility in their faces, Yu Zhi put on an anxious expression and preemptively said, “Something’s wrong! Follow me quickly!”
The two men hesitated briefly before instinctively following Yu Zhi down the hallway.
As they exited through a side door, they encountered five more Espers approaching from the opposite direction.
Seeing their urgency, the leader of the group asked, “Where are you all going?”
Standing slightly behind a taller man, Yu Zhi lowered his voice and said, “To the research building, the parasitic testing area.”
The two men from the restroom seemed to recognize the five ability-users—they were all part of the Operations Department. No one doubted Yu Zhi’s words or thought too much about it. Assuming there was an issue at the research building, they all rushed over.
Yu Zhi deliberately placed himself in the middle of the group, ensuring he was surrounded.
Just as they were about to enter the research building, he glanced back.
He hadn’t intended to, only wanting to check if Fu Suxi was chasing them. But his gaze collided directly with Fu Suxi’s dark, oppressive eyes.
Fu Suxi had been watching him the whole time.
Yu Zhi found it strange. With so many people around, how could Fu Suxi so precisely pinpoint his location?
What was wrong with Fu Suxi’s eyes?
Yu Zhi quickly turned back, suppressing his thoughts, and followed the ability-users into the research building at a brisk pace.
To Yu Zhi’s surprise, the ability-users didn’t run upstairs but instead headed downstairs.
The first and second basement levels were parking garages, but they kept going, leading him to the third basement level.
Exiting the stairwell and passing through two mechanized doors, they arrived at a wide corridor lined with silver-white rooms on both sides. Inside, researchers in white lab coats were taking blood samples from ability-users.
Many ability-users had already completed their tests and were casually chatting as they left the rooms.
Among them, one bald head reflecting the overhead lights was particularly conspicuous.
“Brother Lin!” Yu Zhi strode quickly toward Lin Xiangyuan.
Lin Xiangyuan glanced at him, then at the group of Espers following behind, looking confused. “What are you doing here? Where’s Dr. Qi?”
Yu Zhi blurted out hastily, “Yu Yi is back.”
He didn’t bother to lower his voice, and the surrounding people clearly heard him, turning their attention toward them.
Lin Xiangyuan frowned and whispered, “I’ll take you inside to hide. The Research Department isn’t under the Operations Department’s jurisdiction.”
The Espers who had followed Yu Zhi immediately began questioning their colleagues.
“What happened? Did someone get contaminated by a parasite?”
“What are you talking about? What happened?”
“I don’t know. Someone said something was wrong, so we rushed over.”
“Who said something was wrong?”
“It was—” The man glanced around, then pointed at Yu Zhi. “Him!”
His voice was loud enough to draw the attention of everyone nearby.
When Fu Suxi entered the corridor, his eyes immediately locked onto Yu Zhi, standing in the crowd with Lin Xiangyuan gripping his arm.
Fu Suxi’s gaze lingered briefly on Lin Xiangyuan’s worried expression before shifting to Yu Zhi’s injured arm.
Another pity act to fool people?
Fu Suxi halted and instructed Shang Yu, who had just caught up to him, “Tell that bald guy to stay where he is.”
Shang Yu shouted loudly, “Lin Xiangyuan! Don’t move!”
Fu Suxi lifted his gaze, silently watching as Yu Zhi’s thin frame trembled slightly.
Yu Zhi’s pale hand clenched tightly, veins bulging as if he had resigned himself to his fate. Slowly, he turned around.
The side lighting accentuated his jet-black hair, casting a faint, ethereal glow over his bloodied and battered face. His wounds, both large and small, and the smears of crimson on his body made him look like a watercolor painting diluted with blood.
All eyes darted between Yu Zhi and Fu Suxi, even the researchers peeking out from the testing rooms.
Fu Suxi began walking toward Yu Zhi at a leisurely pace, each step exuding a suffocating pressure.
A low chuckle escaped his lips, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Do you think I wouldn’t dare to make a move just because there are so many people here?”
Yu Zhi lowered his eyes and said nothing.
When Fu Suxi’s polished shoes entered his field of vision, a line of text popped up on Yu Zhi’s interface: [Ability Two: “Null Intent” Activated.]
At the same moment, the overwhelming killing intent radiating from Fu Suxi vanished instantly.
Feeling the familiar change in his body, Fu Suxi’s lips curved upward slightly, though his expression remained menacing.
The murderous rage in his heart was wiped clean, replaced by an intense, unrelenting irritation.
Fu Suxi reached out and grabbed Yu Zhi by the nape, his tone laced with cold amusement. “I have plenty of ways to make you wish you were dead.”
Forced to tilt his head up, Yu Zhi shut his eyes and rasped, “Don’t touch me!”
Fu Suxi paused, sensing something odd.
Before he could act further, Yu Zhi’s voice, tinged with a sob, rang out. “Yu Yi! I’m your brother!”
Fu Suxi: “?”
Tears welled in Yu Zhi’s eyes as he choked out, “I’ve always thought of you as my little brother!”
Fu Suxi’s smirk froze. “??”
The air grew deathly silent.
Lin Xiangyuan stood slack-jawed, his mouth agape wide enough to fit an egg. My God, it’s a messy, forbidden brotherly relationship!
Shang Yu stood frozen in place, her mind reeling.
No wonder Minister Yu refused to reveal the name or reason for his search. No wonder his first instinct upon finding him was to lock down the Bureau…
Dear heavens! This is straight out of a forbidden romance with a dash of orthopedic drama!
BAHAGAHHAAAAA I CANTTTT
